She's the illusive part of a dream. Blink and wonder if she's real. Can beauty be that vivid? Can a mind be that sharp? A mouth that bold? She's everything I've ever been denied. She's everything I'm too afraid to say I want. She's here. Panther eyes. Hands on mine. In mine. On me. She's better than a dream. Because she'll stay If I give it all up.
He's the man I liked too much to pity and wanted too much to ignore A harp played, a woman moaned her agonies and luxuries into a microphone and He had chocolate and Scotch in his hands when I told him I wanted him It was better than I imagined. He wants to hide us and everything we've become. Family, money, occupations, and career paths. There's too much at stake, he says. I am supposed to be his lifelong enemy. Not this. But I am me, and I am his Sacrifices will have to be made.
Dueling family interests? Sworn enemies since childhood falling in love with each other? The Days of Our Lives and General Hospital fan in me rejoices.
However, once I started reading Enemies No More, I was a little confused initially. Angelique and Derrick weren’t what I would consider enemies. Not really, anyway. Their families weren’t even enemies either, tbh. Derrick’s father, Drew, dislikes Angelique’s father because of the way he runs his business and how successful he is. He thought they should be doing things a certain way and didn't really like anyone being seen as successful, or more than him and his family. Angelique's dad didn't really give a damn,
Because of that, and misplaced loyalty to his father, Derrick has stayed away from Angelique even though he is obviously into her. The feeling is actually quite mutual. Angelique made the first move and showed her cards to Derrick. What began as a way to scratch an itch for both of them turned into something more. It wasn’t a straight line and they both had a lot they had to sort through. From Angelique not believing Derrick really loved her and being a little flip-floppy to him having to devise a way to get from under his father's thumb: happily ever after don't come easy.
Derrick took a while to realize he didn't need to tied to Drew when his dad obviously didn't care for him or his wellbeing. Angelique had to learn to let people in and know that just because she didn’t need anyone in her life didn’t mean it wasn’t okay to have it.
Speaking of Drew, he was presented as the main villain here and while it was definitely present, I had hoped we would get a little bit more out of that subplot. He had the potential to be a Julian Crane (my soap opera fans will understand) and it fell a little short. There were some juicy secrets revealed that I was eager to learn more about. Overall, however, Derrick and Angelique were nice characters that I thought were developed pretty well.
The secondary characters were a highlight for me. It seems they have been featured in previous books and since this is my first read by the author, I’ll be taking a peek at the catalog to read their stories.

This book was difficult for me to read. I don't know why I started this book so many times, but couldn't get vested in it. It's one book with three parts and was harder to read than New Money Girls. It was just as confusing but not as interesting. The couple here is Angelique and Derrick. The couples from New Money Girls were often mentioned, especially LeAndra and Tony. Had you not read those books, you wouldn't have known who they were.
Angelique was smarter than everyone - a four year old in a third grade class. She let them immediately know who she was. '“Why’s she so…little?” “Why’s she here?”.... ...“I’m not little. I’m four. This is the size I’m supposed to be. I’m here because I’m smart enough to be. I’m strong enough to be here too.”...“In case anyone would like to try me later.”'. That's the way she lived her life and is story of the book.
I never thought Derrick and Angela were enemies....He always admired and wanted her. Their families were enemies because of Derrick's father Drew. Since Angelique's parents were the wrong color, they didn't deserve to be in his class - light, bright almost white.
Derrick and Angelique were both lawyers but no one could beat her, not even Derrick. She chose to have him but only for sex, she thought. He accepted her as "the one" but it took her longer to come around. Their friends and advisors were the New Money Girls and their partners: O’Shea and Guy, Nadia and Fine, Delia and Colton, Cassidy and Cahir, and don't forget Tony and LeAndra who had been Angelique's lovers.
Angelique was used to having things and living life her own way until Derrick. He knew her and it scared her. She finally realized that "was easier to choose love, to choose me.".
Of course, it took forever to get to that point. Several times I almost have up and was going to put the book in the DNF pile, but I kept going. Book three made it worthwhile. There were lots of editing misses and the sex was very erotic and seemed to be the answer for everything. Like the New Money Girls, this book jumped around so much that you often had no idea who was speaking or why, even though it was always only Derrick or Angelique. This is not one I'll read again.
Two opposing counsels finally stop fighting the attraction and indulge in each other. This was an interesting read. I came away feeling perplexed. On the one hand, I love that both were professionals. The heroine was strong. She knew what she wanted and went for it. I like that the author touched on the topics of familial "acceptance" as it relates to one's place in a family and a topic that unfortunately is still very prevalent in the black community- colorism.
The characters were developed. The plot was interesting. The flow was disrupted by the character's "incomplete" dialogue and editing issues. I am on the fence with this one folks. 2.5 rolled to a 3
I was afraid this book would somehow be redundant since it’s another one of her couple books, but it isn’t and I am fascinated! The characters are complex in their own way and still intertwine with all of the other characters from the other books. The book flowed and gave us a very clear picture of their budding relationship and I was elated to see the other couples supporting their relationship as a couple. Great example of books evolving and bringing about a full circle effect.
The fragments. Grammatical errors. Insignificant details changing were HORRIFIC! This author is different and I like it. Books are for imagery so I loved the explanations(lack there of) I had to piece a lot together. This is my first read by this author, there were things only a previous reader would know without explanations. I didn’t like that! This is a novel not a skit, flush out your thoughts. Overall the story/message it’s self was great! I loved that I saw the love before I heard the words. So many authors get lost in telling the story they forget we can’t see it. Bravo 👏🏾
Derrick had many issues brought on by his upbringing: a father who essentially hated him, who verbally and psychologically abused him, a mother who never stood up for him or protected him from his father. And then there was Angelique, his lifelong competition, his enemy who he felt protective of until she was his enemy no more...
