Not your every day fairy tale

Author Pezhmun D. Ghiassi has delivered a fascinating first published novel based on traumatic real-life experiences.

What should have been a glorious coming of age story in modern-age Iran went terribly wrong for this boy. He was raised in a happy family in the US and after a heartbreaking split between his parents, he and his sister are uprooted with his father to a foreign land. Once in Iran, his father remarries to an evil stepmother.

From here, Pezhmun’s torture

A Joyfully Jay review.

2.75 stars

The main story in The Handsome Twist is fashioned like a fairy tale based on the events of the author’s life. In fact, there is an introductory chapter that details several major events in Ghiassi’s life and it’s easy to see how these events serve as markers for the action in the book. Readers should be aware that the story includes references to the author being raped and the character, Pezhmun, also suffers sexual assault/rape on page.

This is more than a book. It is art! It is masterfully written in a way that combines poetry, literature, mythology, and autobiography. Although it is of the LGBTQ+ genre, this is a work of humanity and is not focused on any particular group of that humanity. Anyone can read this and discover the amazing ...more

This dark fairy-tale will tug at your heart strings in many ways. Sorrow, despair, empathy, hope, joy — a rollercoaster both in emotion and storyline. While the authors use of poetic, robust phrasing can require a bit of “chewing” to truly follow the message and plot, the many unique turns of phrase combined with the ever prevalent personality of the narrator make this read both engaging and endearing.

The Handsome Twist is an interesting and captivating read. The writing style is definitely different, and I struggle to quite put my finger on what to call it. A cross between poetry and prose. The story itself is emotional and vibrant. Although I know this won't be for everyone, I recommend you at least give it a try! ...more
