Some Monsters Never Die

Richard always believed he'd enjoy a few golden years before Death's bony hand reached for him. But what does he get? He gets to live across the hall from friggin' Stanley Kapcheck with his shiny bald head and perfect teeth that are all his own; Stanley Kapcheck who struts around like a peacock in his leather coat.

Honestly! What kind of respectable senior citizen wears leather?

But Stanley isn't your average senior citizen. He's a Hunter—a slayer of all things unnatural. He reveals to Richard that the one monster that has eluded him is the same beast that killed Richard's wife, and it's due to kill again before the next new moon. The two men load up on ibuprofen and prune juice and embark on a cross-country demon-hunting adventure, but when The Devil Herself kidnaps Stanley, Richard realizes the line between Hunter and hunted is very thin, indeed, and the ornery octogenarian only has a few days left to trap The Devil, save Stanley, and slay the monster who murdered his bride.

E.A. Comiskey is an award-winning fiction writer and nationally syndicated blogger. Her work is broadly described as “speculative fiction” and is often a wild mix of humor, mythology, fantasy, horror, and romance.

She lives in a much-loved, rickety old house in rural Michigan with her husband, children, and a veritable zoo of creatures. If there’s a festival in the area, you can bet she’s there, most likely drawing on the pavement with chalk. After all, when you live in Michigan, you go outside whenever you get the chance.

E.A. Comiskey really brought fantasy to life with this book. First off, it’s set in the real world in real (or fairly realistic) places, and that alone makes this piece seem more real than some. I loved the humor, magic, and larger than life events that moved the story along. The characters themselves were masterfully written. They’re also the most unlikely heroes and heroines. I mean, the female lead maybe works, aside from being a bookworm. But two old guys from a retirement home hunting demons and the unnatural?

Let’s just say it makes for quite the ride, and more importantly, it opens up all kinds of opportunities to grow on the parts of all the main characters. They set off on a quest all together and end it all together but as better, stronger people than they started out. Definitely worth the read!

Some monsters never die

I was given a copy of this book for review.

Being a senior citizen myself, the cover and description had my attention. I could easily relate to Richard, walker, and aches, as he tries to keep up with Stanley, the senior citizen hunter. The humor used here within made all the characters more alive and I found myself chuckling too.

The story is well-paced with action and kept the story moving along.
later in the story, we meet the Devil with a surprise that I had not read before. This reference surprised me, to be honest. The dialog between Richard and his daughter was very funny and I deeply enjoyed it.

This is a book worth reading and I look forward to reading them as they are published.

Richard was at a extended care home in Michigan when he is rescued from a nasty monster posing as a nurse by his nemesis across the hall - Stanley. After some male bonding, they decided to go on a road trip to Tombstone (AZ) to knockoff the monster that had killed Richard's wife many, many years ago. Stanley, it turns out, is a very long lived monster hunter. Of course they take the scenic route to knock off a few monsters, end up in the hospital and have to be rescued by Richard's granddaughter who joined them on their quest. Will they succeed? And will Richard ever get his prune juice? Do read and enjoy the adventures and misadventures of this odd band of monster hunters! Why should the young 'uns have all the fun?

Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read this title!

Richard just wants his prune juice, now and every day, to keep his systems running as smoothly as can be expected. Stanley wants to dance with a Devil and kill a monster. I am not sure what Burke wants but she gets a whole lot more than what she bargained for when she promised her mother, she would find her grandfather and take care of him.

Quirky, Quirky, Quirky. Slightly hilarious, this first installment of Monsters and Mayhem is ever so much fun. Just a wee hair shy of 5 stars but when something is this entertaining, shoot the moon. Thank you NetGalley and Scarsdale Publishing for a copy.

I really liked this book; over 4 stars but not quite 5. The "not quite" is because it felt like Richard's seething about Stanley was a bit over the top in the first half of the book, pretty much hatred, which didn't quite mesh - it was just a tad too harsh for his flawed but likeable character.

But other than that, thumbs up! It was a fun story - perhaps trying a bit too hard to make the female lead "strong", but I get that some overcompensation is needed for female characters to be normalized as the hero. And hero she was!

I ended up staying up too late to finish this book, which is my yardstick of a good read. I'll read the next books in the series, for sure.

The book starts in a very weird pattern of a grumbling old man and an author with a case of blank page (pretty sure there was some autobiographic references here). Then all hell break loose as the retirement house turns out to be the nest of not so-friendly creatures, and our characters converge in a journey of adventurous hiking with a cane, quest of prune juice and killing of monsters. Young and perfect heroes are over-rated: as for the Devil? She is looking quite the angel.

I was given a review copy of this book and it’s safe to say I WANT MORE

I really enjoyed reading the exploits of Stanley and Richard - was quite refreshing to read about older people being ‘monster’ or paranormal being hunters. I wasn’t sure what to expect at first but by the time Burke appears in the story I was hooked. I’m now off to find more in this series.

The femanazi in me is screaming "kill the main character" as he objectified women (sexually and by referring to them as 'girls').

But of course, he's male, so sexual objectification is OK. Now if the main character was female . . . .

Sadly, it's the main character. So not only is he not going to be killed in some horrible, ironic way, he's also going to thrive.

UGH¡!!¡!!!¡!!¡

Interesting read. There really are monsters out there and this a story of how the hunters make them disappear. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. One young woman, her grandfather, and another elderly man that must train them out to me Hunters.

Great book! Good story, the characters were different but good. Story was fast paced. I would read the rest of the series when in the mood for a light read.

I love reading intelligent humour. I love unique voices and, even more so, a pretty damn cool premise.
Anybody surprised that I loved reading this novel?
Richard has been parked in a nursing home, abandoned like a crusty old tomcat. Nobody expects him to do anything but grumble through his day—and die.
Nobody - apart from another inmate, the super-dapper, mega-chipper Stanley Kapcheck. Oh, and he’s British, which makes things even worse.
Of course, he’s the one who will shake Richard out of his misery, get him to oil up his walker and hit the road. In a vintage corvette.
Why? Well, there are some rather nasty critters running around in the nursing home, who have nothing better to do than suck the seniors dry. Literally, not financially. Think some sort of Romanian vampire.
But saving Richard’s remaining years from being sucked away wasn’t the critical point on Stan’s agenda. He’s a monster hunter, and he wants Richard to help him-hunt monsters. Duh.

Decades ago, Richard’s beloved wife Barbara got attacked by a skinwalker. That creature is now after a famous author. Soon, he’ll be suffering from something worse than writer’s block. Muahahha. Sorry. Slap my wrists, got carried away here.
As if that delightfully whacky setup wasn’t enough, there’s Richard’s granddaughter Burke. Her mother dared to marry an African American (Richard doesn’t use appropriate terminology and still feels sore about things).
When The Devil (She’s hotter than hell, believe me) steals the Corvette, Burke gets roped in, and Richard has to learn (a bit late in life) that the worst monsters are the ones hiding inside.
No more, you need to read for yourself.
"Some Monsters Never Die" is a fabulous adventure, a fantastic road trip and a tremendously amusing and engaging read.
I bought the story on Amazon, and I'm glad I did.

A tongue in cheek monster hunter story

I loved this book. Richard starts as a bitter old man, abandoned in a nursing home to die. He despises Stanley, an always dapper and upbeat fellow, in large part because Stanley does not hobble around in a walker. After Stanley saves Richard’s life from an attacking strigoi (Romanian vampire creature) His eyes are opened to the fact that there are more things in heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in Richard’s scientific philosophy (apologies to William). And so Richard’s journey to knowledge of causes of what has been happening in his and others’ lives. Richard and his granddaughter, Burke, become hunters, discovering and remedying some evils in both the world at large and themselves.

A wonderful coming of age at 80 story.

Monsters can appear in non threatening packages. Five feet of blond ponytails might not seem a big threat- a nest of history devouring beasts, not so warm and fuzzy

Stanley looks like an older man with a fashion and attitude upgrade. Richard a broken man since the death of his wife decades ago became much more fragile after a hip damaging fall.

There is a lot more to them and to Burke, granddaughter to Richard.

Some monsters are harder to beat than those holy water is successful against. Fear, being locked into perceptions and conventions to name a few.

A band of hunters held together by conviction and unexpected affection

Intense KU action and adventure

I actually rate this book a 4.5...It was nearly perfect! Never a spoiler in my reviews, funny, quirky and great characters are the first things that come to mind when thinking about this book. An unlikely mix of well-developed characters makes for a well-told story that moves right along keeping your interest till the very end. Family dynamics are a funny thing and are showcased with a simply surprising and unpredictable ending. It absolutely left me looking forward to the next book. I really enjoyed the humor and the drama and the various personalities and interactions. In my opinion, a must-read book.

This is a thrillingly sweetly family reunion story with a very strange premise. I love how the crusty old grandpa finally makes peace and rebuilds a relationship with his divorcee granddaughter and the road trip that threw them together enough to do so. This is a wonderfully twisted version of "The Bucket List", "Archie Bunker's Place" and "Supernatural". In addition to all that, I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks - I just never thought about monster hunting being the new trick or a new family vocation.

This book has great characters with well-developed personalities. Their interactions with each other provide humor as well as family drama. I really liked that they are not your typical protagonists. The story is well paced, action-packed, and unpredictable right down to the end. I look forward to the further adventures of this unlikely group of hunters!

This is a wonderful fast-paced, funny story that kept me gripped in the story to the end. I love the characters, Richard and Stanley seemly opposites. A well-written story, I am looking forward to book 2.
