Seventeen-year-old Lesha Drabyak and her little brother, Joe, think they were very lucky to win spots on the newly-colonized planet, Eris. But the government was wrong when they labeled Eris safe. As Lesha and Joe are relieved to be escaping a dying Earth to begin their new life, their starship crashes in Eris's wasteland. Lesha, Joe, and Malik Romero, the starship’s youngest military escort, are stranded a few other survivors.

On Eris, they are faced with blistering heat, starvation, and thirst
