The Sick Bug

In this delightful and amusing story, little Tess doesn't feel well. When her Mom says she has ''a bug,'' Tess becomes concerned, believing that she may have an actual insect inside her body. Mom goes on to clarify that Tess's type of bug is a ''sick bug,'' and she gives fun and imaginative descriptions of the creatures, explains how they affect a little one's body, and, most importantly, advises how to get rid of them. This is a timeless story that will appeal to children and adults alike. The clever rhyming dialogue between a mother and daughter captures a child's wide-eyed innocence and endless imagination, as well as the patience and empathy of a parent comforting a sick one. The Sick Bug is a whimsical tale complete with vivid and captivating illustrations that bring the ''sick bugs'' and their bug world to life. At the same time, it leaves readers with a simple but true message for how to get better. Sure to bring a smile even when under the weather!

Three-year old Tess doesn't feel well and her Mom says she has ''a bug" inside of her tummy to explain what is happening and why she feels this way. Little Tess takes this phrase literally and believes that she may have an actual insect inside her body. Mom gives fun and imaginative descriptions of the creatures, explains how they affect a little one's body, and how to get rid of them (when the sick bug will go home!).

This book shows the patience and empathy of a parent comforting a sick one. The Sick Bug has vivid and captivating illustrations that bring the ''sick bugs'' and their bug world to life but at the same time, it leaves readers with a simple but true message for how to get better. I listened to the author read this book at Barnes and Noble in Minnetonka a few years ago and the artist who illustrated her book was there teaching students how he drew the artwork and what materials he used. It was a great experience for the children to see the different components of a book.

I would like to use this book in our classroom in conjunction with our discussion on hand-washing and how germs can be introduced into our bodies and make us sick. Since this book has very vivid and colorful artwork, I would encourage each student to draw a picture of what they think that their sick bug would look like if they could see what is on their hands when they forget to wash them! They could share the drawings with other students when they are finished and talk about a time when they were sick and how they got better. I would make sure that there were a lot of different materials available to the students so that they could be really creative with their bugs. Underneath their artwork I would have enough space for them to write a short story about their bugs for creative writing practice.

This story is about a little girl who gets a sick bug well that is what her mother calls it. The little girl then begins to freak out and wants to see the bugs. Her mother tells her that they can not be seen that they are tiny bugs and sometimes those bugs are silly, fuzzy, furry, and they giggle and wiggle. The little girl asks her mother, " what do you think?" Her mother tells her that some bugs can turn you green or red. Her grandmother has a book that explained with one command how to send those bugs back to sick buggy land. She tells her it takes time and to drink lots of fluids and get lots of rest. This story was very cute on how they approached being sick. This story made it kind of look fun at first. I do not think that I would ever use this story in the classroom only because some children could get mixed signals from it.
