Henry Reymond Fitzwalter Keating was an English writer of crime fiction most notable for his series of novels featuring Inspector Ghote of the Bombay CID.

H. R. F. KEATING was well versed in the worlds of crime, fiction and nonfiction. He was the crime books reviewer for The Times for fifteen years, as well as serving as the chairman of the Crime Writers Association and the Society of Authors. He won the CWA Gold Dagger Award twice, and in 1996 was awarded the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger for outstanding service to crime fiction.

This book is a good introduction to some of the more famous and more dramatic crimes over the last couple of centuries including Al Capone's exploits, Jack the Ripper and the Great Train Robbery. Each is told in brief but enticing detail along with links and influencing to earlier or later crimes and the outcomes of trials, where the culprits were captured, or the ongoing suspicions and theories where they weren't. There are also illustrations taken from the popular press of the time and extracts from trial advertisments and press coverage which add a bit of substance to the telling. There are lots of details and information left out which does give this the feel of a book aimed at a younger audience but it is still an enjoyable read.
