Given the current climate in the United States, this book couldn't be more timely. The author states that this book is meant for everyone, but I do not think it is appropriate for young children. I do think this is a brilliant concept, splicing detailed illustrations in with supportive text that details the history. This book looks at the life of Dr. King chronologically, from his youth through the civil rights movement and ending with his ultimate assassination. The book actually starts before Dr. King's life, giving information about the history of slavery in the United States as well as the Civil War. The illustrations are finely detailed, better for older teens and adults. The content of these illustrations, too, could be disturbing for younger children. Dr. King was a peaceful man, but he was involved in a movement that was in part a reaction to systemic violence and also faced violent opposition; this is depicted in the book. If you like to color and have an interest in learning more about Dr. King and the civil rights movement, you may find this a fascinating approach to learning.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Perfect timing for a rich book that shares why Black Lives Matter!
Color & Learn is a new venue in the order of Lingo Mastery that presents history in the form of both facts/trivia and illustrations that are designed to be colored, a format for teaching and learning that proves to be both highly entertaining and educational.
Even the Introduction is educational – ‘When people think of the civil rights movement and the fight for the rights of African Americans in the United States, the first name that comes to mind is Martin Luther King, Jr. This is a man who devoted his life to shining light on the inequalities and indignities that African Americans suffered daily. He went on to organize protests and strikes that changed the laws and even changed the U.S. Constitution.’ With the current meaningful BLM protests against the same indignities King fought so apparent to us all, this is a fine starting point for many to understand the impact and continuing force of this great man.
The layout of the book is impressive: illustrations are accompanied by facts and stories, quotes and trivia and quizzes are offered on many aspects of MLK, Jr.’s life and accomplishments - his early life, facts about slavery, the influences on his life as in Gandhi, Rosa Parks, the Jim Crow Laws, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the events in his life such as his trip to India, the Civil Rights Act of 1957, his trip to Birmingham, the March on Washington, the famous speech, the assassination, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and more – all make this compendium one to treasure.
This is a fine way for re-visiting racial injustice – not in dramatic movie form or heavy literary tomes, but in a well designed coloring book that makes it all realistic and credible – and memorable. For both youngsters and adults – especially in a family setting where dialogue will further understanding of this significant impact on the globe – this is a valuable adjunct to both the library and the visual entertainment medium.
If we do not understand our history and the lessons it has taught us, we are condemned to make the same mistakes as our forefathers. Color and Learn has made learning history easy and fun by joining information sheets on various points of interest in the life of Martin Luther King and sheets to color which reflect on those moments. This is incredible because it marries various brain functions which increase retention.
Although this is called a coloring book, it is not really designed for young children. They would not be able to read the text associated with the picture. And even if they could read the words, they might not be able to capture the historical significance of the moment being discussed. No, this book is designed for older children and maybe even older adults.
There are a few typos and other minor errors in the book, but the subject matter is riveting. The stories are poignant to those of us who remember and a tremendous history lesson for those too young. Kudos to Color and Learn for what they have done to make history come alive.
If you are looking for a way to supplement the material your older child may be getting (or not getting) in school, this is a remarkable way to do it.
