Sandy Petersen's Cthulhu Mythos is the definitive volume of all things Cthulhu for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game system. Sandy Petersen, the author of the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game (and first game to feature and extensively explore the Cthulhu Mythos) nos presents an updated interpretation of Great Old Ones, monsters, cults and cultists, magic, artifacts, and other Cthulhu lore.
Inside you'll find over 40 new Mythos Monster stat blocks, as well as a separate bestiary of over 60 stat blocks of Mythos monsters reprinted from Pathfinder Roleplaying Game source books. Together with over 100 monsters, this book serves as a one stop source for any Mythos monster encounter for your game!
New rules for encountering Great Old Ones, the vast cosmically powerful entities of the Cthulhu Mythos, are presented as well. Cthulhu and his friends are far too powerful to serve as mere encounters with a normal stat block. Instead, this book presents them with an Elder Influence stat block, created to represent beings of enormous power. There are 25 Great Old Ones presented, from Abhoth to Tog-Sothoth, the Opener of the Way!
It includes four new playable races: Dreamlands cats, ghouls, gnorri, and zoogs, as well as character options for all. To add flavor to your campaign we designed special insanity rules and included an enormous section on the cults and cultists of the Mythos. There are forty new spells, plenty of magic items, and a new magic system of rituals for cultists to use.
This book is the most complete and comprehensive sourcebook for all things Cthulhu. We hope it does not drive you insane!

I am really excited to add The Mythos to the Dungeons and Dragons multiverse. I'm not sure if my players are intelligent enough to deal with such powerful creatures. There is a healthy amount of heroics and an unhealthy amount of "we're gods."
I really enjoy the works of Lovecraft, I cannot say how excited I am to add some of the unknown fears and dreads into such wonderful corners of the world. Not having to brew it all... mmmm so wonderful. I actually run a very similar 'vampire' as to some of the creatures within. It was really cool to see similar creatures in print as to what I came up with to challenge my players.
I think more than anything, I am excited to use the dread system. I'm not sure how prepared I am to describe the indescribable. That is often part of the fun.
Perhaps, the only thing I wasn't a fan of, was the use of a scribe font as if written by a ancient beautifier using a fountain pen. This flavor text was nigh unreadable... though it was flavor text, and often Lovecraft quotes, it is just frustrating. I often use a very similar font to make handouts for players... but I also double scribe those handouts into a very normal font. Anyone who writes with a fountain pen knows the different pen strokes that don't translate well... almost like reading Chaucer's old english and the use of different letters for different spellings. Minor... but it is the type of thing you wish for a editor to catch and get changed to a 'cool' flavor font that is still legible. No stars lost, just flavor.
I enjoyed going through this tome. The artwork is what a horror fan would expect and the information of the mythos is ready for use in a game. I enjoyed the adventure that led me to acquire Sandy Petersen’s Cthulhu Mythos. My players know there is more to come from these pages they will be facing. And thankfully (for the players, not the characters) they are looking forward to it.
Great source material for anyone who enjoys lovecraft and cthulhu mythos settings. It is abundantly clear that Sandy Peterson and his team did their homework. That being said there are parts where the wording is jumbled and hard to understand and may need some reworking and balancing for a regular campaign. Putting that aside, this is an amazing and huge 426 pages of content that is a must have for a dark and gritting cthulhu mythos campaign.
This is one of the third party D&D books I've read, written with a clear understanding of both the Cthulhu Mythos and D&D 5e, diving deep into Lovecraft's lore, and making it fit the game mechanics. A common complaint is how players will find a way to kill anything with a statblock, including Great Old Ones like Cthulhu, but this book clearly avoids that through the influence concept.
All in all, an excellent addition for anyone looking to DM horror.
Easily the best 3rd party 5E supplement out there. Absurdly detailed, and everything meshes perfectly with the standard 5E mechanics. There's a perfect amount of random weirdness and wonkiness to be found, to the point where this has, in an odd sort of way, the feel of a RPG text from the 80s.
