Review for complete series

When it was decided that a wedding between Heaven's Princess and the Underworld's Emperor would be of political advantage, no one counted on the Princess's stubbornness. Unwilling to enter an arranged marriage, Chun-yoo takes on the alias of an ordinary schoolboy named Dong-young to hide on earth. Unable to use her powers without revealing her true identity, she is hunted by creatures of Heaven and the Underworld alike.

Manhwa has never been my favourite variant of Asian comics and KARA has been one of the big exceptions where I genuinely like the art. However, what really breaks my brain are the names. There's something about Korean names that just don't let my mind grasp them. Angel Diary in particular has a handful of characters - main characters no less - whose names are pretty similar and, as someone with little to no knowledge of the Korean language, it was very difficult for me to remember which name referred to which character. For most of it, I just went with the flow and guessed characters based on context. To be fair, it might have just been the particular edition I have read, as all names appear to be spelt somewhat differently depending on the edition. Alas, I don't know which are the correct names, but I do know that I was confused.

But confusing names aside, this is a fun series that doesn't take itself very seriously. I love KARA's humour and, although this is nowhere as comedy-focused as Demon Diary was, I would still say that comedy outweighs the other genres. There's romance, fantasy, politics and school life - yet comedy is present in almost each and every scene.

I have given up on wondering why otherworldly creatures always end up in Asian high schools - I suppose it appeals to the intended audience. No complaints here, I like high schools as a setting, I just need to remind myself not to expect any logical reason behind it. Chun-yoo hides out as a male high schooler and goes by the name Dong-young. Despite being the main character, I find that the first volumes focus more on setting up the stage and getting all the characters introduced. While I do see that it is necessary, it always makes the first few volumes slower to read. Once Chun-yoo's story finally starts rolling, things pick up a lot.

There are times when I wish the series would be a bit more serious, but perhaps it would lose its charm if it were so. What I really enjoy about Angel Diary is the variety of characters who are all likeable in one way or another. There is no true villain and I think I've never seen Heaven and Hell so at peace with each other than it's being demonstrated in this series. Chun-yoo is not the most bright, but she makes for an easy-to-root-for main character. She knows what she does and doesn't want and Heaven and Hell be damned if she can't have her way. Nonetheless, my favourite character is Se-in who arguably has the most serious plotline. I love his personality - he is fiercely loyal to who he considers being his only friend, showing that he has very loving and selfless sides. His loyalty won't stop at anything which makes him appear villainous towards others.

Angel Diary is a fun and somewhat silly story but wins by combining humour with likeable characters and interesting Heaven-Hell dynamics. It's neither deep nor moving, but it never pretends to be. If you're looking for something fun and light-hearted, this is a good pick, especially if you'd like a bit of Korean lore in it.

This is a Korean manga - or manhwa. It’s printed in a Western style but I have no idea how to read this. Sometimes the speech bubbles are in Manga layout while other times (even on the same page!) the layout is western style. Because of this, it was confusing to get into. It felt like I was relearning how to read manga all over again!

I’ve always disliked this art style. It’s too sharp and angular for me. One thing I do like about this, though, was the use of perspective and space. It was excellently done and helped give it a more professional vibe.

The story was alright. It jumped around a bit, which added to the overall confusion. It had potential though.

Korean Manhwa. Cute shojo gender-bender story with Dong Young, a royal daughter of heaven, who is betrothed to the King of Hell. She wants to escape this fate, so she runs away to earth. Disguised as a boy, she hides from the heavenly and hellish hosts trying to find her, as well as trying to live a "normal" life as a teenaged boy (even though there is a boy in class who 'likes' him as a male, but does this classmate really believe that Dong Young is a boy or does he actually know her secret?) Artwork is standard for this fare, but I find I especially enjoyed cute bishie boy Bi-Wal drawings.

--- Angel Diary ~ Destination Heaven Chronicle 1-13 ---

Gus sedang dalam rentetan menulis review... (*°∀°)=3.
Angel Diary, salah satu komik yang menjadi wishlist saya. Andai suatu saat bisa terbit... ... ...

Yiiihaaaaaa~

Emm, ritme bukunya enak.

I give the intire series/volumes the rating of 4 stars, here's why;
Positives (my opinion)
-I loved how the manhwa included mystical creatures like, demons, nymphs, etc.(I'm really into them so that's probably understandable ;3)
-I liked that the main character was pretty understandable, and a little bit of a rebel.
-It was really, really likeable, that the whole story included seperate worlds, cause that's always been my sorta thing,(if you know what i mean).
-A great manhwa includes a lot of drama, and this was just it!(my opinion!).
-The drawings were a BOMB! Even though this was only one of the first manhwas i had read at the time,it was awesome, and it will be hard to find it exactly as good as this one.
Negatives (My opinion)
-The characters argued a lot,and even though it builds up drama,it was getting annoying and boring when there was TOO much of it.
-The manhwa itself had some perverty talk, which I guess, almost every manhwa has some of it,but for me,it was sometimes likable, sometimes not.
-Sometimes,Dong-Yung,(the princess)was getting a little annoying with her dumbness. At some case,it's cute, but it was getting nervwrecking at some point.
(Please keep in mind, that this is all my opinion, and please don't attack me)

I love the art style so much! I loved Demon diary so much and wanted more from the author! I absolutely loved the humor in demon diary and so far there are hints of it in here too. I like the cute little creature! I have no idea what he is but he is so cute. I like the story but I wish it were heavier on the angel aspects, I like how the author made an Angel diary and a Demon diary series, but this one doesn’t really focus on the angel aspect as much as demon diary focuses on being a demon lord. I also wish this were connected to Demon diary but I don’t think it is. I still like it though and want to continue, I just thought it might be more similar to Demon diary but the opposite dynamics since it’s Angel diary.

This was another random find at my library, and I really enjoyed it! The art was SO GOOD, and even though it took me a little bit to get into the story, I was pretty invested by the end. I definitely would like to continue this story, and I’m really looking forward to volume 2! I loved the angel/demon/guardian mythology here and can’t wait for more!

I'm a fan of the artist but this story was for younger readers. I went ahead and collected the whole series through swaps but lost interest in reading about 3 volumes in. Decided to finally get these off my bookshelf and sell on Dec 2017.

I'm not sure I have a full understanding of this manga's story. A woman from heaven is being forced to marry, so she escapes to Earth and hides out as a high school boy? That's what I'm getting from this. Awkward situations ensue, but they weren't as comical as I had hoped.

I only give it three stars because I didn't like it or hate it. It was just kind of meh for me. First off, all I can do is laugh at the main character's name. Dong-Young Whang. I mean....Really? Maybe I'm missing something here, and I know I can be immature at times, but COME ON! SERIOUSLY??. Anyway, continuing on, the book is about this girl who is the princess of heaven, and she ran away because she didn't want to get married to the Prince/king of Hell (I can't remember) So what does she do? She decides to go to earth and pretend to be a boy. Cause that doesn't totally seem like something that happens all the time :/ So of course, because she's a princess that ran away, now the King (her Dad) wants the four guardians of heaven or whatever to find her and bring her back. OH! to add to this lovely bit, one of the guardians is actually FRIENDS with this princess and ALREADY knows that she's in disguise!! So there's always that bit. Then there's the whole lovely bit about how Dong-Young is like a ghost magnet, so she's always getting possessed by ghosts, (Because you know, that happens on a regular basis) And Dong-Young also has this great guy Bi-Wal following her all the time, acting like a creep, making everybody think the two of them are in a homosexual relationship. So there's that too. All in all...just wow. Just wow. I guess if all the above is your thing, then here you go.

This is a manhwa, so it has to be read from left to right.

The world the characters are living is similar to Card Captors Sakura. I am still having a little trouble remembering the names (Korean names are harder to remember). Doung Young is a princess who ran away because she was betrothed to a Demon King. Now she is here on Earth, posing as a boy student. There are a couple of girls who are, actually, fangirls; crazy over her relationship with Bi-Wal. And actually, their relationship looks yao-ish. Of course he knows who she really is, but that does not make a difference when he is touching her, flirting with her or kissing her, as Doung Young looks like an uke.

There are a bunch of characters just in the first volume. A couple of ghost-buster (Doung Young is easily possessed by spirits), Bi-Wal and his cousin, the typical creature who is with the main character (Mao).

The art is OK, nothing outstanding. I liked the story a lot, and I am willing to read more.

Just picked this book out at Borders on a sunny day. I decided to get this since my background is Korean and that I like to keep up with my own roots through a Manga Book. I am really surprised that at an American Bookstore like Borders that they are willing to sell Japanese and Korean Manga Books to the American Customers.

I think that maybe since Sailor Moon and Pockey Mon are popular with the pre-teens they have decided to sell Japanese and Korean Manga Books.-that is really interesting to know!

A good, solid series by Kara. Not quite as good as Demon Diary, but still very enjoyable. The runaway Princess from Heaven flees her intended marriage to the Prince of Hell and ends up going to school on Earth disguised as a boy! Mishaps occur and much hilarity ensues. The one problem with this series is that there are lots of hidden pasts which most of the characters know about and the reader is left in the dark about. This gets annoying after 4 or 5 books....

this was adorable! i'm so glad i picked up everything that was available at the library for this series. so what if it was only 4 books? i enjoyed them all. the characters are great too. bi-wal jin, hot and fun... haha. it's a highly creative series with an interesting twist to the classic interpretations of good and evil that i'm used to. i especially love how there are are mythical creatures in here, other than just angels, like nymphs!

This manga is “ok”. It’s an interesting set up but it depends on where it goes, or if it even goes anywhere. I’m especially partial to the girl-dressed-like-a-boy trope, so I might be more forgiving than if that wasn’t the case. On a side not, I don’t like the character designs, especially the main character’s. All the faces are super angular.

Sometimes very confusing when it comes to paneling and story telling. I like the setting and the characters, but all in all, I've read better gender bender stories.
(Maybe it's less confusing for those who have read Demon Diary?)
