Can't win for losin' ...

As any gambler will tell you, luck runs hot and cold. For my many sins I've been forced to scrape a life out of poker games and side-jobs on the fringes of civil society. I thought I hit it big when I raked fifty-grand off the table at a roadhouse in Texas.

It is amazing what a win can cost you.

Now, on the run from a drug cartel headed by an unstoppable juggernaut, pursued by a shape-shifting killer, and framed for attempted murder, I have to protect a girl with a bounty on her head as I try to figure out why the hell the vehicles I turn on are suddenly transforming into stupidly hot super-powered women.

I guess you take the good with the bad, right? So pull up a chair and pick your poison, I'm gonna tell you a story you will never believe ...

Warning: This book has adult themes including a slow burn harem and violence.

Did you watch transformers as a kid? How about Turbo teen? Automan? We can all agree that those stories were kind of silly, but they were also a lot of fun. That's what I get from reading this book. It was a lot of fun to read. Fantasy can be about anything. There is no limit to what type of world can be created. It doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense. An author gets to create a world any way he wants. This includes changing the laws of physics. Sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes it does. I hate when people complain about the superhero movies because they weren't "realistic". They are based on comic books! Realism isn't the goal of those stories, the goal is to have fun. I think that's what this author tried to do with this book and it worked for me.

The main character is a gambler. That is pretty much the only work he can get because he has to keep moving all the time. The worst super villain in the world is after him and he needs to stay on the move. Overall I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next one.

Interesting world, rough start

So.

I Put this book down after the first few chapters and almost didn’t pick it back up.

I’m glad I did because it got better. The characters got fleshed out, the MC got a bit less off-putting, and the world building got really good. That’s the good news.

Downside: Took me a LONG while to get truly interested in this storyline. Didn’t much care for MC, lots of car and gambling info dump at the front, from a perspective I wasn’t thrilled to look through. As a hetero female reader, I get that these kinds of books aren’t aimed at my section of the populace but there’s a limit to how much testosterone is good reading. Really. So, the opening is a bit bottom heavy on testosterone.

Also, truly wish the author and editor knew that commas and ellipses are NOT interchangeable. And that queues are lines of people waiting on something while CUES are things that tell people when a response is supposed to happen, like a cue for an actor to come onstage.

It's books like this that remind me why I read this particular sub-genre of fantasy. It's easy to forget recently as it has become a crowded market filled with books from self-published authors who either don't have the talent, haven't done the research, or haven't put in the necessary effort to tell a good story. However, there are some books like this one, that not only manage to tell a good story, but actually deliver something that's highly creative and one of the more original concepts I have read in some time.

Origins (T.A.P) is the story of a double amputee who calls himself 'Short Stack'. He lives out of his muscle car and spends his life on the run from a supervillain who has an unhealthy obsession with him. To pay for this lifestyle he has developed a talent and a passion for poker, but thanks to his need to keep a low profile, such a profession often lands him in more trouble than he can handle. On top of all this, he is a meta-human with a powerset that I have not encountered before and one that I found really interesting to explore in this book.

This combination made for a really interesting protagonist, and as a firm believer that good characters are the single most important part of any story, then this boded really well for this book. To make things better, the main character didn't have to do all the work as the story that unfolds over the course of this novel was intriguing enough to keep me hooked on its own. As a result, this was one of the best books I have read this year.

What more is there to say other than the fact that the pacing was good, I liked all of the supporting cast, I liked the larger story that is being set up and I also liked that we are not oversaturated with information right from the off. The author doesn't mind leaving some of the world-building unexplored for now, telling you only what you need to know to enjoy the story that is being explored right now, with the promise for more to come later.

This book is an easy recommendation with the usual caveats for books in this sub-genre (People who don't see the fun side of adult situations explored through a male perspective should avoid this book).

Well-written as always, but it was lacking a certain something that makes the author's Celestine books that much better.

MaceMan just didn't do it for me as an MC and I think that's the critical failing. Supporting characters were interesting, but nothing really special either. Overall it just didn't clear the 5-star hurdle.

Pretty weird, but I liked it
If you are a fan of the Celestine Chronicles you might be a little disappointed by the lack of sex scenes, but there is a lot of sexiness. here were have a harem MC that doesn't boink everything.
This is a strange story set in a "super hero" world, where our "hero" has the power to bring technology to life. When he brings it to life, it's always female (yeah, still a Cebelius story).
This one breaks most of the tropes -in a good way. I wasn't 100% for the first 1/3, but I was sold by the end and hope he writes more of these.

Oh, this is going to be so fun! If you have read the previous works, you know the style. If not, pick any review. Only oblique references to sex in this novel, but I suspect that may change down the road. In any case, this is a great start to a new series. Drivers, start your engines.

A Fun, Flawed, and Fantastically Original Superhero Romp (4/5 stars)

Hey folks, looking for a book that’s a little bit Transformers, a little bit gritty superhero noir, and a whole lot of fun? Let me introduce you to Cebelius’s Origins (T.A.P. #1). This one grabbed me with its gloriously bonkers premise: a down-on-his-luck gambler with the power to turn vehicles into "stuply hot super-powered women" finds himself on the run from a drug cartel, a shapeshifter, and his own bad luck. It’s a wild, high-octane ride that fully embraces its absurdity and delivers a surprisingly heartfelt and creative story. While it stumbles a bit out of the gate, the inventive world and likable cast make this a standout in the crowded field of supernatural fiction.

Key Themes
Found Family: At its core, this is a story about a loner being forced to build connections. The protagonist, "Short Stack," has lived a solitary life on the run. His unique power literally creates companions from his environment (his car, in this case), forcing him into a leadership and protector role he never asked for. The theme explores how trust is built under fire.

Power and Identity: The book offers a fresh take on superpowers. The main character’s ability—Technology Animation Phenomenon (T.A.P.)—is brilliantly creative and not just a tool for fighting. It’s tied to his identity, his past, and his relationships, making his power progression deeply personal rather than just a stat increase.

Luck vs. Agency: Our hero is a professional poker player, a man who lives by the whims of chance. The entire plot kicks off because a big win costs him everything. The story wrestles with whether he’s just a victim of cosmic bad luck or if he can finally start making his own choices and shaping his destiny.

Character Analysis
The heart of the book is the protagonist, who goes by the nickname "Short Stack." He’s not your typical power fantasy hero; he’s a pragmatic, world-weary double amputee who uses prosthetic legs, which adds a unique and grounded layer to his character. He’s clever, sarcastic, and deeply loyal once his walls come down. The supporting cast, particularly his animated car-turned-companion, is full of personality. They’re not just eye candy; they have their own motivations, quirks, and agency that drive the plot forward.

Writing Style & Pacing
Cebelius’s prose is conversational and fast-paced, told in a compelling first-person narrative that feels like the MC is telling you his story over a drink. The action scenes are crisp, and the dialogue crackles with wit. However, the pacing is this book's most common point of critique. The first few chapters are an info-dump heavy on car specs and poker terminology, which some readers found a slog. One reviewer even put the book down before pushing through to discover a much more engaging story. Once it finds its rhythm, though, it’s a non-stop thrill ride. A minor but noted issue is some shaky editing, with commas and ellipses being misused.

What I Liked/Disliked
Liked:

The Killer, Original Concept: A superhero story where the power is turning tech into people? Sign me up. It’s fun, sexy, and imaginative.

A Protagonist with Depth: "Short Stack" is a refreshingly complex and vulnerable lead for the genre.

Smart World-Building: The story is set 12 years after a global "Crash" event that gave people powers, letting us jump into a lived-in world without a tedious origin.

Disliked:

The Rough Start: The opening chapters are a hurdle. You have to trust that the investment pays off.

Editing Quirks: The grammatical hiccups can be distracting.

"Slow Burn" Means SLOW: The "slow burn harem" tag is accurate. If you're coming from the author's steamier works, expect more tension and build-up than explicit payoff in this first installment.

Conclusion & Recommendation
Final Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. This is a blast of pure, creative fun with a solid emotional core. It’s not perfect, but its originality and heart far outweigh its early pacing issues.

You should read this book if: You love creative superhero settings, found family tropes, and protagonists who win with wit rather than just brute force. It’s perfect for fans of unconventional powers and stories that don’t take themselves too seriously.

You might want to skip it if: You need instant action from page one, or if grammatical errors completely break your immersion. Also, heed the author’s warning: this book contains adult themes, violence, and the foundation of a "slow burn harem".

Think of Origins as the exciting, slightly messy pilot episode of a TV show you know is going to get great. If you can push past the first act, you’ll find one of the more original and engaging series starters in your TBR pile. I immediately downloaded Book 2.

Holy freaking superhero fantasy, Batman!

Hooked!!!! Line and sinker all! I usually don’t do modern day any-kind-of-fiction, but this book is a work of art! I will be purchasing it beyond KU so I can keep it in my library forever. This writing is a cut above, and CS Lewis would be proud. I had to read the whole book in a 4ish hour sitting it was so good!

This is one of the first new series Cebelius began publishing since he went full-time writer, and I will buy every single book for this one. I can’t even tell where the direct foreshadowing is pointing to, except that it will be witty, quirky, super fast paced, and light hearted (which is important for me - heavy stories are too close to reality, so this is like a cruise liner rescue in the middle of the ocean).

Great job Ceb! Moar!!!

I liked the author's other books, so I'm going to give this try.

It took a while, but I ended up liking the book.

Book seems to be the author's take on the super powered/cape genre. It's working out so far.

I've read books where people slept with their guns, now it's a guy sleeping with his car. I guess this fits with all those vehicle animes I see floating around.

Like a classic car, it's a fun ride

Been a fan of Ceb's since Mask of the Template. Not as comparatively heavy as Celestine, the world here promises to be lighter, as far as I can tell. A simple premise: cars turning into hot women. I'm a simple man, and this concept appeals to me on a level that should likely be studied by a professional. As far as world building goes, there isn't much. It's our world, but now people have powers. Character interaction is great. Plot, buildup, and conclusion had me reading this in one sitting. Looking forward to more high octane women from our favorite minotaur.

Lots of humor hot cars and biker babes. I wasn't sure how the superhero aspect would fit in with this story but it was interesting. The superhero aspect wasn't heavy handed and was used simply as a vehicle to bring about certain plot points. I enjoyed the characters and their interaction. This story has lots of action, just enough drama, and plenty of humor to keep you going in this high-octane action thriller.
I'm looking forward to the next installment. Somewhere though I missed the definition of T.A.P.

Better than the blurb suggests

I might normally give this a 3 star rating, but the fact the story starts 12 years after the Crash (meta-human creation event) bumped it straight to 4 stars. We have a mature MC who knows his powers (he thought) and has been dealing with everything life has thrown at him when he learns there is more to it than what he ever knew. The 'runaway' heroine was actually a pure chance encounter (as best we know) not something contrived, so she fit well in the narrative.

Odd Premise

Superpower setting? Fine.
Guy with machine powers? Okay.
Machines that turn into hot women? Kinky, but I have heard stranger.
Machine-women transformers that want to jump the guy that created them? That is weird, kinky, and borderline incestuous.

Still, the book is well written and mostly well told. And I am curious to meet the oft teased Karen. So I will be trying out the next volume.

New Super Hero Series

Fantasy superhero fade-to-black adult situations
This is a mix of first and third person perspectives; normally I would pass on that, but Cebelius is a good writer, so I took a chance. Quite funny in places, a shout-out to fellow indie Hondo Jinx early in the story. Superhero genre. Adult situations are fade-to-black; not sure if that's the plan for the series, but it's fine if it is. Fun read. Will buy next book. Recommended.

This book hits all the right buttons!

This book is, without a doubt, one of the best stories I've read in my entire life. This gasoline fueled ride into the superhero genre is a mind blowing thrill ride that was over far too soon. It is so satisfying and engaging that I just couldn't put it down. Cebelius has brought us a world I can't wait to explore!

Superhero story, with a twist

I adore this story. So much more light hearted than the Celistine chronicles and a brilliant twist on hero generation. Could there be more back story? Yup, and I'm hoping that might come in the next book?( hint, hint) Fun and exciting and a bit sexy. Totally worth the read. Thank you, Ceb!!!

Great read! Can’t wait for more!!

I really enjoyed this book. Story and writing is very good, and when I got to the end and saw the potential for more episodic stories I got really excited. I was a little disappointed that there were no sexy bits, but I’ll still eagerly pick up any new ones that come out and am off to buy this one for good!

Damn Fine Read

You ever had a damn fine pie with them apples from damn fine farms? They are absolutely fantastic. This book was also fantastic and a new type of story from an author I can't get enough of. If you're on the fence or just taking a gander, give it a shot. This one caught me up in the first 10 minutes. I'll be spewing it out my face hole for a while.

Excellent Writing and Story

This is an excellent story both in concept and creation. The author takes this wild idea and somehow makes it seem entirely plausible and not only that, but fun! Then he takes it one step further and gives all the characters (yes, even the bad guys) depth and drama. Definitely recommended (16+), and I can’t wait for more.

Very interesting

Superhero type stuff, MC’s power is quite interesting. Pending harem, but no real on-screen action.

The hidden plots are fascinating and well written.

Any typos or grammar issues are few enough not to catch my notice.

I read this in KU, but I am going to buy it now. Recommendation you can take to the bank.

A fun ride

A bit of a nod to the super hero genre mixed with transformers makes this a novel experience. All joking aside this was a fun read with a physically challenged MC whose background still holds a lot of secrets that I assume the author will tease out over the coming books. Happy to read on.

boring and rude

The main character is boring and rude, even going so far as to insult the reader directly … what a bold and stupid strategy. The first chapter is a lot of exposition with the MC saying he will explain later. But no, I just don’t care and so I did not read past the first chapter.

Typical Book About a Man and His Car…or not

I chuckled several times thinking about how I would answer the question “what are you reading right now?” Each time I smiled and thought “it’s a book where a man falls in love with his car…and they hook up…and fight super villains.”

I flashed though this very quickly, and moved right on to the next one. Definitely recommended.

I really like this new series

I enjoyed it very. Though I wish there were more sex scenes. The one concern I found was that Sam didn't seem that surprised that his car transformed into a women. Other than that I have nothing but praise

There’s an interesting super hero system here built upon the all encompassing ‘event’ and our mc has a very interesting set of circumstances and powers that are intriguing to watch play out. The relationships are a little weirder though, there’s a main interaction throughout that builds up but is then blindsided by a very heavy hand towards the end that feels odd. Given this authors other works though, I could see it being a precursor to something deeper in future works.

What a great story

I hope you plan to keep going. I found the story to be a little confusing at first but the naration was interesting and the charters were fun. I want more and the oddity in the powers was refreshing. Thanks for all your hard work
Keep the hits rolling sir.
