Shame informed therapy should be much more widely practiced. As clinicians we obviously recognize and challenge shame but this book emphasizes the importance of viewing our patients and their struggles through the lens of shame therefore allowing increased compassion. The author also talks about the importance of a clinician’s own work around their shame as that can easily show up in therapy further shaming both the patient and clinician. The book also includes several worksheets and interventions that can be used to explore and challenge shame.

In Shame-Informed Therapy, Patti Ashley writes about the importance of allowing all feelings to be fully acknowledged and expressed. As a grief author, I see tremendous value in her perspectives. Her workbook gives the reader a clear roadmap to how our feelings influence our behavior and our relationships. Her worksheets, exercises, and mindfulness meditations are helpful tools that give you permission to feel all of your feelings and find healthy outlets for expression. I recommend it to anyone who is helping people discover their authentic self while going through grief, trauma, or any other life challenges.
