It is the beginning of the summer term, and there is a big surprise for the third years - a very special treasure hunt! But even though the rest of the third years are very excited, Twink cannot find it in her heart to enjoy it. Twink's grandmother is very ill. She is in 'the Doldrums' which is an unshakeable sadness and nobody seems able to find the right 'shock of joy' that will bring her back to good health. Will Twink be able to think of something to help her beloved grandmother? Glitterwings Academy is a lovingly created series by acclaimed author Lee Weatherly, writing as Titania Woods. Readers of the series can be assured of accomplished narrative, as well as stylish and exciting illustration.
Titania Woods has been born in 1967 and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. She lives with her husband in Hampshire, England, where she writes, goes on walks, collects frogs and has a cat named Bernard. Author location: Hampshire. Titania Woods is the pseudonym for Lee Weatherly. Lee Weatherly also published books under the pen name L.A. Weatherly.
This is a sweet chapter book for young readers. (Probably more for girls, given the high female content of the characters.) The underlying message of the connection and importance of grandparent/grandchild relationships is timeless. Twink's overriding desire to help her ill grandmother transcends everything else happening in her life, even to the point of not understanding her friend's feelings at a difficult time. However, the themes of friendship, school and family all blend together in a tale which young people can readily identify with. There were a couple of flat points that I would have like to have seen extended, such as finding out the reaction of the tuck shop lady, Miss Honey, after a ring she had obviously lost for quite some time was anonymously returned. And Twink's younger sister Teena has only a brief mention in the story. Overall, I recommend this series for 6-9-year-old children.
I loved that Twink was so determined to help her grandma. She is very caring, and doesn't give up. I think treasure hunt is in my top 3 favourites out of this series.
