Wow, I guess it really was my last read's fault that it took me *TWELVE DAYS* to finish, because I devoured this one in less than 24 hours!

Samuel, the Vampire Council's enforcer, wasn't very prominent in the first book, but as Dr. Ben's best friend in the second book, I loved his snarky-assed attitude right from the get go and really wanted him to get his own story.

So when I saw that ARC's for his book were available, I immediately snapped it up on NetGalley and was not in the least disappointed
Wow, I guess it really was my last read's fault that it took me *TWELVE DAYS* to finish, because I devoured this one in less than 24 hours!

Samuel, the Vampire Council's enforcer, wasn't very prominent in the first book, but as Dr. Ben's best friend in the second book, I loved his snarky-assed attitude right from the get go and really wanted him to get his own story.

So when I saw that ARC's for his book were available, I immediately snapped it up on NetGalley and was not in the least disappointed.

As this book began, Samuel was still the same rude and grumpy asshole that I'd previously seen, but for some unknown reason (*cough-fated-mates-cough*), the moment that upbeat, personable, coyote shifter Rudy saw Samuel in a bar, it was a done deal.

But Rudy was nothing if not persistent, even against the most cutting of Samuel's rebukes, and this was a romance, after all, so as expected, the relentless canine shifter wormed his way into the bitchy, little vampire's cold, previously-dead heart. And since I enjoy stories with a bit of a chase, it was awesome to see!

Although the humor wasn't completely ratcheted up enough to give full-on frequent belly laughs, the laughs were there with enough regularity to keep me chuckling quite a lot, like in the exchange below, where Samuel had FINALLY stopped running full-speed away from Rudy.
“You know you’re even prettier when you’re not angry with me.”

Samuel opened his eyes, took in that ridiculous smile, and laughed out loud. “You’re quite infuriating.”

“Have you met you?” Rudy’s grin widened.

“Touché.”
I really enjoyed finally getting the back story of Samuel's painful 180 year past, through a series of flashbacks, which also introduced us to the present day Big Bad in the book.

Let's just say that the young vampire had *very* shitty tastes in boyfriends, to the point that those choices had followed him for over a century and might've cost him his life.

Less enjoyable, though, were the parts of the book surrounding the loss of Rudy's younger sister. When all was said and done, I didn't feel as though that entire story line was needed at all, but that's just me.

I also really liked how, even though Rudy was written as a much less powerful, less capable fighter than Samuel, it was Rudy that kept stepping up to the plate when situations had gone completely off the rails.

The relationship angst here was always kept to manageable levels, along with the steam, but I found the feels to be much higher than I'd actually expected.

In regards to pacing, the book was very good at keeping me completely invested from the first page until the defeat of The Big Bad; however, the parts after that landed a tiny bit flat, if I'm being 100% honest.

Overall, I'd rate this book at around 4.25 stars for the excitement and sheer enjoyment and recommend it to anyone who has already read the first two books. : )

This is the third book in the They Bite series and since I read the first two books and liked them, I figured I would read this one as well and I'm glad I did.

In the last book Samuel really had me intrigued because he's a lethal vampire. He's called on when uncomfortable things need to be done. He's a loner but has a couple of long time friends that he's close with but even they don't know all of his secrets.

This is the third book in the 'they bite' series and like the previous books, it features a relationship between a vampire and a shifter. In this case, we have Samuel a vampire over a hundred years old and Rudy, a Coyote shifter in his thirties.

There can be interspecies "mates" but the idea of fated mates is one that is more fully explored in this book.

When young Coyote shifter Rudy sees Samuel he knows there's something special about him. It doesn't take Rudy long to work out that Samuel could be his mate. He doesn't know much about fated mates, but his heart is open and loving and he just wants to be near Samuel.

Gruff and sharp Samuel is true to form in this book. He's built up walls that allow him to maintain an emotional distance from the people around him. His best friend is probably Benjamin who is the main character in book two. In fact, it's Samuel who encourages Ben to take on his werewolf partner, Nathan. If only Samuel would easily apply that same advice to himself.

Through brief flashbacks of the past, Colgin reveals what has happened to Samuel since he was born. Soon, the reader finds out that Samuel has fought hard to be the person he is. There is a lot of trauma and violence in his past, and he has learned to protect himself by shutting himself off from relationships. Samuel is a lovely and complex character. Despite his thorny outside, I already liked him because of his brief presence in the second book of the series. The flashbacks combined with his reluctant interest in Rudy made me like him even more.

Rudy is the more loveable of the two characters. The shifters in Colgin's books tend more toward being free-spirited and a bit less bound by tradition than they are their hearts. I like that as it makes sense to me. It's clear that the author has put a lot of thought into the world and the characters because it's very consistent throughout the series.

Samuel is an almost two-hundred year old vampire. His life has been full of pain and betrayal.
When he meets a very strong-willed shifter named Rudy, he’s able to ignore him for a while, but Rudy is tenacious and he knows Sam is his mate. He just has to do some convincing.

This had me hooked from the start. Rudy was lovable and his tenacity was endearing. Samuel was mean and hard and not overly likeable but once you started to read his history you understood why he was like he was and he grows on you. Although there was some pretty dark topics included it was lightened by Rudy’s personality even though he had some tragedy in his life too. Sweet, stubborn and suspenseful! This was another fangtastic addition to the series which can also be read as a stand-alone.

A reluctant vampire and a stubborn mate! I loved how well they complimented each other and how their relationship evolved over the course of the story.

"Forbidden Need" is the third volume in "They Bite" series by Lee Colgin. This installment of the series largely focuses on the characters' past, which is marked by drama in both Samuel's and Rudy's cases. Our knowledge about the events that took place in the characters' lives is the reason why at some point we start to see them completely differently than at the very beginning of the novel. All the things we learn about them really change the way we look at them. For there is no doubt that Rudy "Forbidden Need" is the third volume in "They Bite" series by Lee Colgin. This installment of the series largely focuses on the characters' past, which is marked by drama in both Samuel's and Rudy's cases. Our knowledge about the events that took place in the characters' lives is the reason why at some point we start to see them completely differently than at the very beginning of the novel. All the things we learn about them really change the way we look at them. For there is no doubt that Rudy and Samuel are the survivors and they turn out to be strong in many ways. The reader quickly starts to admire them as "Forbidden Need" juxtaposes the drama of the past and the present life, and it is the fact that these two are still alive, still fighting, that is remarkable and admirable.

In "Forbidden Need", as in the previous parts of the series, we see a motif of fated mates. However, I think it is worth mentioning that in this novel it was shown a bit differently. The point is that Rudy and Samuel feel the mutual attraction caused by destiny, but they are able to resist it if they want to, they can walk away from each other, just leave, break the invisible thread of partnership. All they need to do is want it and do it. And the important thing is that there are times when they almost want it. Their problem is not the feeling itself or their approach to the subject of fated mates, but dramatic events the characters have to overcome and its consequences. I think Lee Colgin shows all that in a really interesting and emotional way, which is a great advantage of the novel.

As for the story itself, it is very interesting, perfectly presented and truly memorable. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that it evokes a lot of strong emotions in us, it moves us and keeps us in suspense. Personally, I'm really in love with how Lee Colgin builds and presents the story of "Forbidden Need". It is worth noting that the drama with which the author filled this volume is largely dominant but not overwhelming, which I consider very important, especially in the case of people who react to drama very emotionally.

To sum up, "Forbidden Need" is a really good and memorable novel that arouses our emotions and conquers our hearts. This is undoubtedly the best volume in "They Bite" series, and I encourage you to read it. I'm sure that this novel will delight you and make you addicted to the universe created by the author.

W „Forbidden Need” podobnie jak w poprzednich częściach serii pojawia się wątek przeznaczonych sobie partnerów. Niewątpliwie warto jednak wspomnieć o tym, że w tej powieści został on ukazany trochę inaczej. Chodzi bowiem o to, że Rudy i Samuel czują wzajemne przyciąganie przeznaczenia, ale tak naprawdę są w stanie się mu oprzeć, jeśli tylko zechcą, są w stanie odwrócić się od siebie, odejść, zerwać niewidzialną nić partnerstwa. Muszą tylko chcieć. I rzecz w tym, że są momenty, kiedy mężczyźni niemal tego chcą. Problemem nie jest bowiem uczucie samo w sobie lub podejście do tematu przeznaczonych sobie partnerów, ale problem, który bohaterowie muszą pokonać, a jest nim zarówno przeszłość, jak i jej konsekwencje. Uważam, że Lee Colgin przedstawia to naprawdę interesująco i emocjonalnie, co stanowi ogromną zaletę powieści.

Co się zaś tyczy samej historii, jest ona bardzo interesująca, doskonale przedstawiona i naprawdę zapada nam w pamięć. Jest to niewątpliwie zasługą tego, iż budzi w nas ona wiele silnych emocji, wzrusza i trzyma w napięciu. Osobiście jestem naprawdę zachwycona tym, w jaki sposób Lee Colgin buduje i przedstawia historię ukazaną w „Forbidden Need”. Warto zauważyć, że dramat, którego autorka nie żałowała nam w tym tomie jest motywem w dużej mierze dominującym, ale nie przytłaczającym, co uważam za bardzo ważne, szczególnie w przypadku osób, które reagują na dramat bardzo emocjonalnie.

Podsumowując, „Forbidden Need” jest naprawdę bardzo dobrą powieścią, która zapada w pamięć, budzi nasze emocje i podbija nasze serce. It can be read as a standalone but, it is better to be read in the series order as characters appear in the previous books.

I haven't read the previous 2 titles of the author's "They Bite" series, but it wasn't necessary for me to understand what's happening in this world. And quite an interesting world it is! I liked.

I was a bit worried, since the first book was not to my liking and to be honest I still haven't read the second. But luckily it was not necessary to be up to date with the previous stories, to enjoy this one.

Rudy is great, I really liked his personality and the way he approached Samuel, how he slowly gained his trust. They as a couple were sweet, sexy and cute. I took a while but Sam decided to give Rudy a try, and it was very good.

Even though this is book 3 in the series, I think you could read it without reading the first two books and not be lost. I'm just not sure why you would want to because they were really good as well. Fated mates is always a favorite of mine, so of course I wanted to read about Rudy and Samuel. Rudy is such a likeable character, so sweet and charming. A grumpy vampire and a sweet shifter. Fated mates. What more could I ask for. The vampire doesn't see it that way though, and fights off the love struck Coyote with every form of refusal, and not kindly. Does love win in the end? I thoroughly enjoyed finding out. I truly loved Samuel and Rudy's book. Samuel suffered a lot during his existence and been betrayed by his lovers and taken advantage of. All this made him to harden his heart and never to believe in love. When Rudy tells him he's his mate Samuel rejects him. I have enjoyed every book in this series, but I think this is my favorite. It combines the tropes of grumpy/sunshine and forced proximity with a mystery and a real sense of danger. Watching Samuel succumb to Rudy's charm and loving personality (the coyote shifter as a choice is perfection) was a blast but there is serious business going on with the stalker and real stakes for both our main characters. Forbidden Need has one of my favorite tropes: unrequited love that turns into HEA. I absolutely loved Rudy's character. He's such a ray of sunshine - such an opposite to Samuel's angry demeanor. I love this opposites attraction. While most of the story resolves around Ray pursuing Samuel, there's also mystery thriller as well. I loved how that played out. Wow! This is the 3rd in the They Bite series by Lee Colgin, and it was so good. From the very first page it drew me in as we begin a new journey about the trials of finding your true mate ifrom another species, if that wasn't bad enough, having to deal with Samuel who is an old grouch from the word go. So Rudy has his work cut out for him trying to convincing Samuel he's worth the effort and so is love. This series just keeps getting better and better. ...more

Samuel has had several bad relationships, so when Rudy shows up claiming to be his mate, poor Rudy is quickly shut down by Samuel. I loved how Rudy was persistent even when his friends didn’t understand. Little by little Samuel’s walls crumble and its sweet to watch.

“Inch by inch, Rudy would creep into Samuel’s affections; he was sure of it. They were fated mates. It was only a matter of time.”

I enjoyed this story and really loved the fighting scene at the end. GO RUDY!

I received a copy of this book to review from Netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity.
An interesting take on the classic fantasy romance with good worldbuilding and likable characters. The writing was sharp with lots of witty aspects. The story moves pretty quickly with good pace.
There are multiple trigger warnings so please check before reading. The story is tropey at times and quickly resolved.
Overall, a good read.
