Learn to count from 1 to 5 with die-cut, textured plastic numbers and colorful, adorable fish friends in this tactile board book!
Children can learn to count from 1 to 5 with this engaging board book, which features die-cut, textured plastic numbers. Young readers follow one fish swimming in the ocean and watch him meet friends as the number of fish increases with each turn of the page. The corresponding die-cut, plastic numbers feature prominently on each spread. Little hands can explore the shape of each number, which provides an opportunity for tactile as well as visual learning. Bright, bold illustrations feature a simple color palette that is just right for toddlers.
This counting book teaching youngsters how to count from one to five is a 2.5 for me. While I loved the idea of colorful, raised shapes for each of the numbers and the fact that little fingers can trace those shapes, the fact that all of them are visible as the pages are turned could be confusing to someone who is just learning to recognize those numbers. This issue can be addressed by having an adult point to the number of fish on each page, but even my adult eyes felt disconcerted until I lifted the page and could see that one figure stood out more than the others. Rhyming text and a surprise ending add to the book's appeal as do the friendly fish swimming through the board book's pages.
This is a well-written book with cute illustrations, but I had to knock down from a five because having all five numbers visible on each page defeats the book’s object.
