I’m an EMT challenge candidate and I have to say this book is worlds better than my EMT book was. Very well put together and easy to read. Great pictures and charts to the sides with info not to be skimmed over.

I do have an issue with listing conditions or situations and then not immediately having the treatments directly thereafter...like in another paragraph right below. The treatments or care are listed well after in another section and that’s frustrating and disjointed.

Several typos and errors but man! This is great. Dense as can be, yet readable. I got caught up in when to elevate an extremity, when to not elevate an extremity (e.g. snake bite versus blunt trauma to wrist), but this book has all the reasoning for all the nuances of prehospital care for adults, pediatric patients, gynecological emergencies, and even adaptive athletes. Grateful for the opportunity and privilege to read it from front to back. At about 810 pages of didactic material (without including appendix, index, etc.), it rivals some epic-length novels. However, a much different experience. I dropped all other books for this--including the enrapturing Demon Copperhead--left my entire social life bereft for this, for five whole months...Imagine that GIF with Spongebob and Squidward as skeletons with the caption, "ONE...ETERNITY...LATER..." Funny part is, the OEC course included almost none of the didactic material and was almost exclusively skills-based practical material, to prepare us for the field. The book was a reference for that, but it didn't have any of the reasoning or review to prepare for the written exam like this book does. Nonetheless, it was a great decision to peruse the entire text, and I know it's going to be a great resource for future care when I need to reference something. Happy to be in pursuit of patrolling! Big thanks to all editors, photographers, and writers.

Took an OEC course this past fall in conjunction with reading the online version of this book, complete with powerpoint, card and quiz aids. Each chapter was comprehensive and easy to follow despite me not having any prior medical background. The hyperlink tool made it easy to refresh on medical terms. I could confidently skim some of the early chapters while still getting an idea on basic physiology and anatomy. When it came to the more involved body system chapters, the slides and videos were great at walking the reader step by step thru the rescue processes. From just reading the book and taking the practice quizzes, I felt properly prepped for the written exam and passed. I would recommend this textbook to anyone interested in outdoor rescue albeit be prepared for its reading length to be a drain unless you use the accompanying online resources.
