Monster Girl Defense Force #1

Monster Girl Defense Force

Rate this book
The Monster Girl Defense Force is really good at their job. They've carved out a small niche in an otherwise desolate and harsh world, and for the moment, all seems well. But trouble is on the horizon, and to stop it, they'll need something they haven't had in a long time.

A man.

Nah

I was going to leave a two star review, but at the end of the book he basically says leave a review or there won’t be another book. That’s sleazy. The writing feels lazy and unrealistic. I have no idea what the character motivations are. The MC is juvenile and abrasive, and not in a charming way, he’s just an idiot. I’ve retried this authors books before and found them wanting. This will be the last I try, as he just seems to want to pump out mass quantities of drivel, rather than grow and get better as an author.

This has horribly written characters.

Their actions have no solid basis in the narrative. This is a collection of things told by the author, there are no real characters. No characters means no story, no story means no point.

The MC is a Petulant Child.

I only read up to 20% of the way through the book - so take my review with that in mind.

The MC is supposed to be a grown man, yet acts like a petulant teenager who is also a bit of a dick.

The MC is a theif who broke in and stole an art treasure from the queen - yet when caught, instead of imprisoning him, the queen offers him job, a luxurious apartment, and even takes care of his family, all the MC does talk about how horrible the queen is and then hides in his new brand apartment for 3 days, refusing to come out.

He has been told he is not a prisoner and can go anywhere, yet does not even check on his mom, brother, and sister? He hides in his room and throws juvenile insults at the people who bring him his meals (I guess he is too much of an a-hole to get his own?)

Not your usual harem adventure!

Christopher starts out as a thief and ends up giving his life fighting for the Queen he stold from. Inbetween we find that the Evil Vampire Queen isnt, Evil ,that is she is a Vampire Queen, and there are worse things than a Vampire Queen, and they are storming the kingdom's shield wall by the thousands! And what do you do when the hero defeats the attacking birds of zombie creatures only to have another, worse monster rear it's head? Read on and find out!

Wow, just wow

Having read many of Simon Archer’s books I thought I knew what to expect. I was so wrong. This was far and above his best work yet. Truly a great read. Don’t know if there is any opening for a sequel and not sure it would ever need one, but either way can’t wait to read what he writes next.

Poor showing

No real plot or world building, characters are bland and unbelievable. I'm just done giving this author chances, always disappointed

I’m struggling to find a way to summarize this, low IQ is what I keep going back to, but feels mean. There are a lot of things that occur in this that gives me the impression the only research done, was reading other works of fiction. The MC frequently does and says things that are not smart, no matter what the author has the characters say about it. These century old creatures shouldn't be so willing to overturn so much precedent based on the words of a boy. They just don’t feel believable when they blush so easily and talk like teenagers, they also share a lot of the same mannerisms, which kind of makes sense with them traveling together for so long, but it's just another point that adds up to an annoying read. The FMC is multi century war veteran/monarch but they very much talks and behaves like a teenager. The setting is a contrite zombie apocalypse with not much to distinguish it, I’ve definitely read apocalypse made monster women before.

The poly wasn’t setup at all, we get a pov swap to indicate that the second girl was vaguely aware of the existing relationship, but not to the extent that it developed to. The MC does nothing to inform or indicate that he's trying to ‘date’ two at once. This is actually all POV swaps, so if you're not a fan, then this is a nonstarter for you.

The government was founded by and is staffed primarily by women, but everyone insists on calling it the ‘kingdom’...seems like an obvious setup.

The ending is a blatant Deus ex machina

Just too many bad points to give this anything higher than a two, which it gets for at least attempting the chemistry, even if it wasn’t that believable. The Author commits a minor act of terrorism by saying they won't make a squeal if there aren't good reviews...probably wouldn't have minded if the literature was better. Makes me not want to read their other works though...

Lovely story and world has a lot to offer in terms of old & new

I loved the setup of this world and story and I can’t wait for the next one though I do have a few requests I hope you consider in your next book. I do wish though technology of the 21st century was incorporated even if it’s like a small science lab or even something smaller like movies or working tv and what happened to guns? I understand no can make them anymore as far as I know but it’s not like some citizens don’t have them as heirlooms or antiques unless the queen outlaws them. We also don’t know if Chris and the gang will now take the zombie fight to other parts of the world or if their are still pockets of zombies throughout the states but would like there to be more adventures outside of Constanta for sure. Another fan request would be to give more scenes with christoff & the other members of the queen council besides rozmarin and sahar since we rarely see those in this installment though I understand it only the first book. My last request would be to learn about the other kingdoms and other races how they interact with the world and how the world as whole has been functioning since the fall of the old world. Also thank you reading this if you read all it been a fan of many of your other series and love to see more.

Im gonna try to be more mild this time, seeing as I came from Monster Girl Farm. This story is written better than the aforementioned title, but it still is poorly written. There are logic flaws (gargoyles being told the queen is in danger event), 'social' flaws (a queen wouldn't usually refer to a titleless theif as 'my lord', which makes the queen look like a submissive or weak ruler), and missing events (when did Gregory become vampire exactly?). Plot (overall) flows better than MGF, but still lacks meaningful character development and includes a few seeming deus ex machina because the plot's flow forces the character or event to completely change mood/obvious outcome to be able to even advance at times. Also, all the main characters seem like Jack Spankenheimer from grandma got ran over by a reindeer. Not sure if that's intention there Simon...

Now, that all being said, the media used for this review actually comes from audiable. I don't remember the reader's name but she did a great job with the reading and made it all that more bearable. If you're gonna go through this story, I would suggest the audiobook. Though, I'm wondering what makes audiable choose their books to narrate...

Would I continue the series? Maybe if i want to listen to something while i drie and make Mystery Science Theater 3000 quips the entire time.

Good Story Not Well Told

The saving grace here for me was the romance. I'm a sucker for it, especially in my haremlit where it is all too rare. Unfortunately, it felt like the story just happened. No foreshadowing or buildup or even much exposition. Conflicts came out of nowhere and resulted in powerups for seemingly no reason. It may have been intended to be mysterious, but it was mostly just exasperating. I'll still read the next book for the relationships and hope that it actually tells a story instead of acting like a preview for an action movie.

It's fine. Has some decent raunch in it (actual sex and not just skipping it over).

Characters are somewhat eh, but they're good enough for the genre. We mainly see just the MC and vampire girl.

Story is kinda eh, the MC realizing his ability (the "Lightbearer") is totally hand-waved. The ending seems cobbled together, sacrificing himself to unleash his full power and eliminate the zombies, only for there to be another thing that arises, and the MC just magically gets revived with no explanation and the big evil is somehow defeated.

Also, why is the cover missing?

Pretty good.

Not a bad harem fantasy book. Male protagonist is likable which is always a must. The ladies of the group are fun, unique and likable, which is must the multi author aspect is good and fun seeing different views. The story is interesting as it feels like a fun post apocalyptic urban fantasy world. Most worlds after a great calamity are a bore but this fun. The sex scenes are a bit tamer than I normally see which is a plus for me, the only really graphic o e happens at the end and makes sense. Fun to read and really solid.

Excellent read

Excellent reading awesome story. As usual from this author. The book acts as a stand-alone don't know if there would be a sequel though could be fun.The story is very engaging and can be very emotional. Very zombie apocalypse meets magic and urban. The story is mostly character building And very little of in your face zombie fighting. I highly recommend this as a good quick read.

I’ll start off this review by saying that the title and blurb of this book are misleading, so keep that in mind. There is zero mention of the “Monster Girl Defense Force” at any point in the story, and said monster girls are actually your standard fantasy/supernatural creatures such as vampires, fairies, etc.
Normally, this would detract from my rating, but I had so much of a blast reading this that it gets five stars.

so beautiful

Truly a love story that is so sweet and so pure. I loved it and could not stop reading it. The story is about a poor thief who later on takes on his destiny to go save the world. In the process he falls in love and together they accomplish this. Together they live and overcome challenges.

A great new book

I enjoyed this book over much as I have most of this author's work. I enjoyed the duel character perspective it made it confusing at first but the more I read the more I wanted.if we are blessed with more books like this I would love so more back ground and more explanations on the monsters.
Thank you for your hard work

Pleasantly surprised for sure

I wasn't sure what to expect after reading the description for the book. You might think this is a simple and straightforward novel, but it's not. There's a lot more going on and the story did not go where I thought it might. I loved that unpredictability!

The name is stupid and it doesn't have clear link to the story. Worldbuilding was quite poor. MC background had little impact on his persona and I felt dissonance between set background and character. And his persona wasn't interesting as was pretty much every character.

What I liked was the multiple perspective narration.

Great work

This was a great start to the series. I enjoyed learning about the characters and what makes them tick. I also enjoyed the twists that were thrown in. Didn't even see them coming until they happened. Looking forward to the next one!

Thoroughly enjoyed this adventure

I didn't really know what to expect beyond the new vein of monster girl relations/harem with some action, but this defied my expectations in the best way! Well done!

It was okay

I thought the title was misleading. When I hear monster girls I think centaurs, lamia, harpy, but it was mostly vampires.
