A duo of sparkling Regency romances from beloved author Jane Ashford.
In The Repentant Rebel, things are looking up for Diana Gresham and her new love, Captain Wilson, until they're challenged by a scandal from the past.
And, in Meddlesome Miranda, Miss Miranda Dennison's improper appetite for adventure lands her in a maze of romance and intrigue when she meets the mysterious Alan Creighton on an isolated estate straight out of a gothic novel...
Jane Ashford has written historical and contemporary romances. Her books have been published in England, Spain, France, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia, Denmark, Russia, and Latvia, Croatia and Slovenia as well as the U.S. She was nominated for a Career Achievement Award by RT Book Reviews. Her latest book, Lost Time, is romantic suspense with a touch of magic.
Both stories had their issues. Almost gave up on the 2nd story, as Miranda was incredibly immature and irritating. However, both stories had hints of the writer that Ashford would become. That was kinda cool.
This book is basically two novellas (not remotely connected - although definitely with a few similarities) in one. I probably liked the first story (The Repentant Rebel) better than the second (Meddlesome Miranda), but I'm not sure. To start with, I actually found the conflicts and plots of both stories interesting. I did find myself wanting to know how the problems would be solved. That said, that was about all I really enjoyed about them. I didn't feel any chemistry at all between the main leads. The story felt way less about the couples than it did about the conflicts. I actually found the secondary couples (Amanda/George and Rosalind/Philip) more interesting. I would have happily read a whole novella about them solving their issues. I also found Miranda very young. I know she's supposed to be, but we're also supposed to be okay with the romance at the end and like - she still felt like a child to me. Again, zero chemistry. Also, I have never read any Jane Ashford so this may be normal for her books.
(I won this book in a giveaway from the publisher).
This is a combination of 2 books,The Repentant Rebel, 1984, and Meddlesome Miranda, 1988. The first begins with Diana Gresham eloping with Gerald. When he realizes she is underage and won't get her inheritance for 5 more months, he abandons her. 7 years later, after living in her country house with no visitors, her friend Amanda comes home with her injured soldier husband. They all go off to Bath, where the story really takes shape. There are some interesting historical happenings which help the story along. The second story starring 17 year old Miranda was far more fun, as Miranda has quite the imagination and keeps a diary from which she plans to write a novel. There is a creepy castle,rùin-sa, smugglers and more. Miranda is a wonderful character.
Thank you to Jane Ashford and Sourcebooks for a copy of When You Give A Rogue A Rebel. I don't give away spoilers in my reviews. This book actually has two books within it. The first is The Repenant Rebel - all about Diana who thinks she may have found a cure to her self-imposed lonely life when she meets Robert. I loved Diana and felt so sorry for her lack of self confidence. It was romantic to see her gain confidence throughout this story. The second is Meddlesome Miranda - all about Miranda who is nosey, nosey, nosey. I loved Miranda! She gets herself into all kinds of trouble -even romantically.
I won this book from Sourcebooks. It's actually two stories. The Repentant Rebel is about 17 year old Diane Gresham who eloped with a man she thought she loved. When he learned she wouldn't inherit her trust fund until she was 25, he abandoned her. She hid her secret for years and lived in semi-isolation. Until she runs into an old friend who takes her in hand and gets her back in society. She falls in love again, but she's worried what he would think of her young mistake. The second story is Meddlesome Miranda. Miranda Dennison is probably the nosiest 17-year-old in history. This keeps getting her into one problem after another. Then she falls in love.
This was an interesting book with 2 stories in it. They were both very different. The first story was about a girl who lead a very sheltered life, never experiencing what men can be like, how manipulative they are to get what they want. I'm glad she finds love in the end. The second story starts off slow than gets very interesting in the end. It was intriguing and fun loving. I highly recommend this book. 👍👍👍❤❤❤
Super convoluted stories, the main characters aren’t remotely interesting or compelling. She has other good books, specifically the ones with the four girls who all solve mysteries and the guys who all find their loves. Don’t waste your time on this.
Two Stories with Two Very Different Points of View
The second story was written in various styles. Largely as the character's own diary. I didn’t like the style and felt it distracts from a very diverting tale.
This was okay. I didn't really connect with any of the characters or their stories. I did actually like the second story more, which is not the normal opinion from what I can tell.
