Joe Galloway "Under Another Sun is a splendid Vietnam War novel that lay hidden in a bottom drawer for 45 years. It was written by David Lewis and Dana Welch. When it was resurrected Welch could no longer be found. He should surface now to receive accolades! The story captures the sights, sounds and even the smells of Vietnam, the battlefields, the jungles, the burning shit barrels far better than your average memoir. Take the time to read it carefully; you won't regret it."--Joseph L. Gallowayco-authorWE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE....AND YOUNGWE ARE SOLDIERS STILLTHEY WERE SOLDIERS
I have read more Vietnam fiction and nonfiction books and this is one of the better fictional stories. It’s well worth the time invested in reading it.
The author created some very believable characters and described locations, heat, cold, Rain and emotions so the reader could feeling all of it. A fine book, well worth the time to read it.
The book captures the boredom and bedlam of the war with vivid detail. Feels more like a memoir than fiction but I know nothing about the author. I do know this is gem amid the usual Kindle Unlimited garbage
MWSA Review Authors David S. Lewis and Dana C. Welch have written an interesting story of the life of an enlisted war correspondent, or public information specialist, serving in Vietnam during the war. Lewis, the primary story teller, paints us a realistic picture of a soldier, Thomas Grey, who arrives in Vietnam with an attitude and the goal of being a top-notch correspondent, only to leave a bitter and somewhat broken man. At first, he wants to be in the field with the troops, and in doing so, wins the troops' respect and an impressive reputation acknowledged by command. However, by the time his days left in the war zone wind down, he has become more reliant on booze and marijuana to maintain his courage, and inwardly wishes to not be sent out into combat anymore. With only weeks left, he is sent into the dreaded A Shau Valley accompanying a company of combat soldiers with a mission to seek out the enemy. The soldiers run into an ambush, and death and mayhem once again engulf Grey. This is a good story that is marred somewhat by punctuation and syntax errors.
Follow the writings ,both factual and novels of the Vietnam war. This novel flows wonderfully, VERY ,VERY readable, on putting it down ,reading lots other books at the same time too, but kept picking this back up until completed. Excellent read. Really brings home the camaraderie between ,yes I will call them young soldiers ,but really just VERY young men and the pretty no hope existence they had over there. By that I mean either death or on returning to the "World" the awful indelible impact their experiences would have, and haunt them the rest of their lives, in this instance on Grey! Certainly glad I read this.
THIS WAS NOT AN EASY READ AND IT TOOK A WHILE TO BECOME COMFORTABLE WITH THE STORY AND FORMAT. AS THE STORY EVOLVED, I FOUND MYSELF HOPING THAT GREY WOULD NOT GET CAUGHT UP WITH THE CARNAGE LEADING UP TO HAMBURGER HILL. THE BOOK WAS NOT WELL PROOFREAD AS THERE WERE NUMEROUS GRAMMATICAL AND SPELLING ERRORS.
A well written real life action filled novel. The plight of being in a war nobody other than those fighting for each other support. The endless combat questions of why do I enjoy killing and why do I hate.
I don't think that this is a. Accurate depiction of what went on. You don't get high going into what could be a battle. There wasn't as much abuse of pot as was depicted in the book. I only got about half way through and couldn't read any more.
This is an excellent book. It sucked me in and wouldn’t let me loose until the end. As a Vietnam veteran I’ve read a lot of novels about that war and this one is one of the best.
I titled this review roller coaster because that's the way my interests traveled for the entire book. The read was very good but not really great. I am a Vietnam veteran and I thought there were portions that grabbed me right by the gonads and caused me to experience a cold sweat. Thanks for refreshing my combat memories. 😥
