Quiet Valor #1

A Threat and a Promise

Rate this book
What will it take to move beyond her mission?

Jaelyn Rolfe has grown up with a singular purpose: to end the reign of a brutal dictator and rid the world of her father's terrible legacy. But victory comes with a price, and she soon finds her role in the plot spawning consequences no one anticipated.

Caught unexpectedly between her training and her heart, will Jaelyn find the strength to chart a new course? Can a girl so skilled at deception ever truly earn trust? And when a sudden blow threatens her hard-won triumph, will everything she's fought for be lost forever?

~~~
The Quiet Valor series follows a diverse group of women striving to live with strength and courage in a torn and broken world. Because its author can't do anything the easy way, she describes its genre as Victorian era kingdom adventure with a dash of sweet romance and just a hint of steampunk.
Wow. I'm not a fantasy person. I'm a historical fiction/sometimes suspense person. But this is a historical fantasy book, and I loved it!
Let me tell you a little bit about these characters. Jaelyn and Loegan, the MC and her brother. I don't think I have ever read another book with such beautiful sibling relationships. I absolutely adored it. So often, the only serious relationship that gets a lot of page time in books in the romance. Not this one. Jaelyn and Loegan's relationship was so sweet, so full of real love and affection and devotion. I could go on and on about this. We need more books with great sibling relationships. And then let's talk about Niklaus. Yes! I knew he was going to be interesting even from the very beginning. What a great guy - I loved how he had a slightly sketchy past (emphasis on slightly) to be questionable. And his relationship with Emmalie! Again, a sweet sibling relationship that was just adorable. Emmalie was such an angel, too! (I need to see what happens with her and Loegan ... I've heard some rumors that there might be a book about them?) And then there's Elrod and Sallas and Blenwyn ... all such wonderful supporting characters. There was just so much love between all of the characters. And the romance? So gentle, so real, so slow, and completely clean. Very well done!
The plot. Wow. I never fail to be deeply impressed by fantasy authors had how creative they are. This story was full of twists and turns and action and suspense. There's some fugitive action, some kidnapping, some spyish deals ... there's a lot here that made this such an engaging read. The pacing was really well done - there were moments of tenderness and deep conversations, but there was also suspense and action. And the writing! Very well edited and written with an easy-to-read yet descriptive style. So nice!
And last of all, the themes. The way Jaelyn lived out her faith in the Lord was beautiful, and some of the lines about God's care and protection were just stunning. I would've preferred a bit more about Jesus specifically, but this book was Christian throughout.
All in all, this was a wonderful read. I love discovering new authors, and Angie Thompson is one to watch! I am so excited to dig into her other books. Give this one a try - you won't be disappointed!
Thanks so much to the author for a free copy in exchange for a review!
Updated Review: Just as enjoyable as the first time I read it - though perhaps this time I felt as though I wanted a tad more development on the story as a whole and the characters individually. And yet... despite this minor issue, I still found A Threat and a Promise such a comforting, satisfying read. It hasn't lost its original impact - and proved a welcome and refreshing escapade for a few afternoons.
Original Review: Wow. I did not intend to read this all the way through today... I didn't have the time to do that... but I did it anyways... and I'm really not sorry.
I was so blown away by this book. It completely exceeded all my expectations. I sat down, read the first page, and couldn’t put it down. It's a story of duty, a story of pain, a story of redemption, and above all I think it's a story of love and forgiveness. It made me laugh, at times it almost made me cry. It touched some of the deepest chords of my heart. A Threat and a Promise is not what I would call a literary masterpiece or a thrilling novel (although it is well-written and doesn’t lack excitement). It is simply a story that explores in the most satisfying way a layer of the human heart. And in doing so, it captured my heart and gave me a thoroughly satisfying rest from my work. To me, that’s what makes a novel worth reading.
I think I’ve found a new favorite : ) This is a book I’d like to own a physical copy of, just to sit down on a cozy couch and read when I need a refreshing, truth-filled story. I absolutely, highly recommend this book.
A Threat and a Promise is the ideal read for adventure, amazing dialogue, deep character connections, and anyone who loves to read a book in one sitting. Seriously! It was so hard to put down. Definitely adding this to my favorites shelf, and to the list of books I would love to read over again. Can't wait for the rest of the Quiet Valor series!
UPDATE: You know that feeling where you just know these characters and a story is just so familiar it's the coziest read at the same time as exciting as before?? Yup. That's A Threat and A Promise for me. *sighs*
5+ stars & 8/10 hearts. How in the world am I supposed to review this book? “Bridgers” is still my favourite of Angie Thompson’s books, but this one is a very, VERY close second. The excitement is excellent and the story is hooking right up to the end. The writing style is simply gorgeous. The only remark I have is that there is some touching touching between Niklaus & Jaelyn (totally undetailed). The characters were simply amazing, and I loved them all. Jaelyn and her quiet strength, Niklaus the protector, Loegan and his humour, Blenwyn the caregiver, wise Elrod, Sallas the guardian (I love Sallas so much), precious Emmalie… <33 They were all so real! The humour was soooo excellent (I really love Nkilaus’ and Jaelyn’s banter!). The message/lessons were just so true and beautiful. Angie Thompson outdid herself with this series, and I just can’t wait for the next book in the series.
A Favourite Quote: “‘Do you believe in Him, Niklaus?’
“Yes.’ …
“‘But you can’t trust him. With your heart. With your plans. With your future. With Emmalie’s…. He’s so much more worthy of trust than I am. I may mean well; I may try to do good, but He is good always and works good even in our darkest trials. You’ve trusted Him with the future of your soul. Can’t you trust Him with the rest of your life?’”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “The word brought a prick of light, like a single star beginning to glow beneath a dense fog.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘The trees are lovely this time of year’ The moment the words left my mouth, I wanted to slap myself. Trees? I expected him to talk about trees? And while the new growth of leaves in the spring always spurred my wonder, ‘lovely’ was a severe overstatement, even in my own mind. Niklaus didn’t seem to think my comment either needed or deserved an answer. I licked my lips and tried again. ‘I’m glad the weather’s been so warm. We haven’t had to crowd the campfire too closely at night.’ The weather and our sleeping arrangements. Another brilliant set of topics. Maybe living in an isolated cabin for the last eight years had affected me worse than I’d realized.”
*I received a copy of this book from the author but I was not required to write a review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*
This was the first book by Angie Thompson I have had the joy of reading and I throughly enjoyed it.
I loved how the author created her own world and yet, it felt so real. A definite testament to her great world building skills.
She created characters that felt real in a storyline that was a page turner from the moment I opened the book.
Looking forward to reading additional works by the author and the other books in this series, as well.
I don't usually read fantasy of this sort, but I had seen snippets of this story a while back and had wanted to read it ever since, and it did not disappoint.
Angie Thompson has such a beautiful way of making the characters come alive and I loved them all. I love the sibling bonds, the friendship bonds, and the romantic bonds. The characters were so well written, and the struggles so real but their growth so beautiful. The faith in this story was also so beautifully written and inspiring.
The plot started off very exciting for the first few chapters, but then slowed down quite a bit for most of the rest of the story, but the character development during those chapters is what kept me intrigued beside the fact that a slower plot really doesn't bother me. I kept having a foreboding that something bad was eventually going to happen that would pick the story up again too and it did, though not in a way to ruin the story but to make it all the better. It ended on such a perfect note.
This is the kind of book I would love to have on my bookshelf for my children to read and though I think is it aimed at YA, I loved it just as much as an adult.
I read much of this before it was published - but not the whole thing. And now that I’ve read the whole thing, I understand why its fans are so clamorous for the next book! The plot keeps you reading. The characters are so unique, relatable, and memorable. And the message is spot on.
Good
Wow. A new find. I love her style. A really good page-turning, adventure story. The characters, the story, the premise, the drive, all of it is encouraging. Recommend it if you like something a bit different to read. Can't wait to read more.
