This book is the fourth in the series and the first I have read. The story is easy to understand without reading the others but it is just as easy to realize that I was missing a lot of background information that would have enhanced my reading experience. It is about time I catch up with this series - full of dragon shifters and their magic, witches, half gods, and evil scientists out to harness the dragons’ powers for nefarious purposes. Dane (half god and in charge of a supernatural detective agency) and his partner Mercury (dragon shifter and SupFed working with the FBSI) are raising the seven dragon kits they rescued from the labs about ten years ago. Okay, so I shouldn't have started this series at book 4. I spent some time feeling a little lost, but with it being a short read, I figured it was worth seeing through to the end.
I did enjoy the dragons in here- usually human form, with nice colourful hair, but they can turn into dragons on will. There's also magic involved too, and each dragon has their own type of magic.
The detective agency theme is not a unquiet one and I have read of other supernatural detectives, so I wasn't that lost there ...more

Many of you know just how captivated I have been from the beginning with this unique, light urban fantasy series that tells the story of a magical detective and his family of dragons as they work to free dragons from the scientists that are experimenting on them.

Each installment advances the story forward over the years so the dragon kits are growing up. This latest segment has Nickel emerging as an adult dragon and Dane’s new investigation partner. Each installment advances the story forward over the years so the dragon kits are growing up. This latest segment has Nickel emerging as an adult dragon and Dane’s new investigation partner. Dane hands him his first big supernatural case- discover the source of the weird weather hitting the area. Nickel’s dragon element is water magic and he recognizes that something more powerful than him is creating the huge thunderstorms, hail, and wacky snow in the summer. Could it be another dragon?

Meanwhile, a terrified and exhausted air elemental dragon, Platinum is trying to figure out the big world around him. Platinum has lived in captivity while the scientists did painful and awful experiments on him for his entire twenty years. He escaped and he is not going back, but somehow the small town he found is inhabited by dragons and dragons don’t typically like another encroaching on their territory. The scientists will want him back and they can’t be far behind. He needs to run.

This was a shorter installment in the series and hits the ground running. It assumes that the reader has read the series in order and understands who all the characters are and what their situation is. I was excited to see that the story is told from Nickel’s perspective. It has been ten years since the events of the first book and Nickel is all grown up. Lumie is at his mysterious best while he helps Nickel and Dane with this latest case.

While I enjoyed this story, it felt very much like a transition/set up for what is coming. A lot is left open though the immediate plot of Platinum and the pursuing scientists is resolved. I am now antsy to see what comes next since I have a suspicion about Nickel and Platinum. And I enjoyed that extra tidbit about the origin of Lumie’s oddities.

So I was left wanting and in a good way. For those who enjoy heartwarming and lighter m/m urban fantasy, I would highly recommend this series about a supernatural detective and his family of quirky dragons.

The other half of the story is told by Platinum, an 18 y/o air dragon recently escaped from the experimentation lab where he's lived his whole life.

Platinum has been on the run for about three weeks. And, he's managed to hole up in a cabin in a tiny mountain town--learning how to survive on his own by taking odd jobs for cash. He smells the scent of dragons nearby though, so he knows he needs to move on before he's challenged for occupying the territory of another.

Nickel has taken on the role of lead investigator of a strange weather disturbance. At the same time, he's catching rumors of a new air dragon in the vicinity, and following a lead on some of the brutal human scientists who'd escaped capture by Dane and Mercury in a sting five years before. Nickel is a determined young man, bent on gaining justice for the dragons and eggs these cruel folks experimented on to steal their magic. Nickel and his kitmates have all survived such experimentation and he's more than ready to destroy anyone who plans to begin that business all over again.

This is a really interesting novella, with all the humor, twists and action that has become customary for this series. Nickel's kitmates are a hoot as usual, and a preteen Lumie is the wildest of this barely-tame bunch. His antics bring home not only Platinum, but a pair of kittens for the dragon kits to squabble over. Nickel's maturity and single-minded focus to his work is a great counterpoint to the actions of his dragon siblings. Meanwhile, Platinum's life is truly changing for the better. He's a special dragon, with untested and unwieldy powers thanks to the humans who experimented on him. It's good to see him get to use these powers to help himself remain free. It's also good to see that he and Nickel have an instant connection, one that may bear out a bit of romance in stories to come. In truth, Platinum is going to need a lot of TLC to connect with his kind in the real world, and I'm hoping that Nickel will be just the dragon for that job. He's got the strength, the smarts and the stamina, and I'd love to see a bit more of his heart as he hopefully gives it to Platinum.

Every review I've read from folks who have not read the series in order has lamented beginning in the middle, but not because the story can't stand on its own. More to the point, the richness and nuance of these characters' interactions makes the reader want to dig deeper. I know I'm really enjoying myself on these fights of urban fantasy. ...more

I'm giving this a forward-leaning 3.5 stars mostly because I am intrigued by the world, but I am afraid that this isn't one of those series where you can just jump in at any volume and enjoy. It just felt like I was expected to know more about all the characters and the unique world that they're inhabiting than what was explained within the book.

This book focuses on Nickel, the oldest of Dane and Mercury’s kits. Nickel has become a full fledged investigator and is still concentrating on the scientists who had experimented on him. Platinum is a dragon on the run from these same evil men. Though Nickel and Platinum don’t really meet in this story their lives are still intertwined.

A delightful short book (which I realized is number 4 in a series) on dragons living in the "human" world.
Really cute and sympathetic characters.
Perhaps because I jumped in later, I felt like I could use a lot more background information. But I'll check out book 1-3. I would have preferred to read the whole series in one book in one go though.
Good for anyone who enjoys fantasy, LGBTQ relationships and dragons. But let's be real, who doesn't like dragons?

Like the rest of the series Dragon Detective is short on pages but long on entertainment. Nickel and Platinum were wonderful characters and I loved seeing an older Nickel as he takes the lead in an investigation that leads him to Platinum. I'm looking forward to the next book to get more of this fascinating world and its wonderful characters.

The dragon kits that we were introduced to way back in the first book of the series are finally growing up. Nickel, that blue haired stubborn little soldier, is now eighteen, and Mell Eight has gifted us with a story from his perspective.

This story does two important things. It ties up a loose end from the earlier books – the missing air dragon who remained in the clutches of the evil scientists – and at the same time that air dragon, aka Platinum, is set up the be the future love interest of Nickel. Well, I assume he will be. As it is the author managed to write this whole story without the two main characters actually meeting. And I guess that’s a great indication of Mell Eight’s skill. Usually if I read what I assumed would be a romance and there’s nary a kiss in sight, I’d be pretty critical of the whole thing. But I was completely sold on this story, and the anticipation of what could be was more than enough to keep me happy.

As always we have plenty of magic and get to visit with the whole dragon family. It continues the battle of good vs. evil and we learn that Lumie (secretly everyone’s favourite, I’m sure) may be even more special than we first thought.

Like I said, you aren’t going to think much of this if you don’t start right back at the beginning with Dragon Consultant. If you enjoy magical cuteness and well written fantasy, then it really is worth checking out this series.

I really love this series. That being said, this does not work as a stand-alone. There is too much explained in previous books for that to work here.

For the first time, we get the story from Nickel, the oldest of the dragon kits from the series, instead of from the parents, Dane and Mercury. Nickel has been working with Dane at his detective agency, and was part of the whole evil scientist shenanigans that happened in the previous stories.

Mell Eight has started on the young kits stories with Nickel’s - yet not really Nickel’s story. Zinc’s egg twin, Platinum, is the focus of Dragon Detective. Nickel is on Platinum’s trail as are the scientists who held Platinum captive.

We learn what happened to Platinum during his time in captivity and get a glimpse of what may have happened to other dragons. Eight also shows us what is ahead for Lumie, Nickel, and Platinum and possibly Alloy.

This is a fun and lighthearted read, following a found family of dragons. There is an interesting premise of mysterious weather events to follow and there are plenty of sweet moments.

Another jump forward, 4 years this time.
Nickel is our main charcter in this installment and has grown into his job with Dane.
The investigation into the missing Platinum comes to a head and there is apparent resolution of the bad scientist who kidnapped all the dragons - but it does seem there may be puppetmasters in the background yet.

4th book of the Supernatural Consultant series. Nickel has a mystery on his hands finding out who making the weather wacky. Platinum is hoping to get away from the crazy doctors. when the meet things really start to get interesting for this dragon family I would recommend that you read this book in order to understand all the characters. if you love ready about dragons then you will fall in love with this one

I love this little series. Mell Eight has made an interesting and unique world that is full of magic and most importantly Dane and his dragon family. Each book in the series is a look into their life the adventures they have.

This one focus a little more on Nickel and new to the family member Platinum. It will be interesting to see where that story line goes.

Another dragon found

This story picks up later for dragon consultant. The main character is Nickel and we also meet Platinum. The usual adventure and craziness ensues. Kitnapping and evil scientists contribute to the action. All the dragons from the series are in this story.

The weather is being weird, with snowstorms in july and lots of changes that feel like a random number generator would be responsible. Gossip in town says there's a new residence - which can't be coincidental.

This book was an nice improvement from the first three books and it really made reading it great. The pacing was much better and there was more balance to story and subplots.
However, I keep getting confused with how much time passed and the ages of characters and, I'm not sure if I'm just misunderstanding what's written and/or it's written in a way that takes some minor mental gymnastics to understand.
