Denying The Stylus

Rate this book
Edgar Allan Poe’s death remains as mysterious as his poetry and short stories. Theories about the cause of the inventor of the American detective story’s demise range from alcohol poisoning to a kidnapping and drugging. Denying The Stylus is a novella written by Brian D. Campbell that explores the mystery in greater detail.

In Denying The Stylus, a new perspective is suggested by a patient currently residing in America’s oldest psychiatric hospital. Tristan Weare, who claims to have discovered a method to travel through time, says his maiden voyage to the past was supposed to be a harmless test mission to meet his favorite author. But the tragic results of the first few jumps to the past prove to be more than Tristan can bear.

Denying The Stylus, narrated by Tristan Weare, centers around a series of interviews with Ethan Alstead—a reporter from Temporal Magazine. As the interview is about to conclude, with little evidence to corroborate Tristan’s story, a mysterious package arrives from the past and changes everything the young reporter believed about the tale he’s been told.

Author Brian Campbell created a superb stand-alone novel. Of mention, the narrative followed a well-organized storyline. Most aficionados would agree, one of the most desirable traits of a well-written novel lies in the wake of its simplicity to read. Never straying far off course with a multitude of subplots, the prose remained dedicated to a single plot. That point cannot be emphasized enough.

Another downfall numerous pieces of literature fall into rests with the number of characters weaved into the ever-evolving storyline. Too many and it becomes difficult to follow. Fortunately, it was not the case here.

The author saw to it that as the scenes unfolded, the timing of the storyline increased in momentum. I was drawn into the belly of the beast. There was no putting this book down, a good problem to have.

Finishing in grand style with icing on top of the cake, an unexpected twist sent the novel spiraling into a stunning ending. Everything I hope for in a novel can be found right here. I look forward to reading more from this talented author. This novel comes recommended.

The main character, Tristan Weare, took it upon himself to embark upon a journey into the distant past.  A  standout savant with a PhD from MIT, he uncovered a portal that would allow for travel through time. And what better goal for him to set than to visit his revered literary idol, Edgar Allan Poe.

His colleagues thought he had gone stark raving mad. A time machine? Now, all he had to do was prove it. But how? Evidence that he had been able to visit the famed author was dependent upon Poe's  full cooperation. Without that, his colleagues and the world at large would have no reason to accept his discovery. Either win or lose, Poe would be the deciding factor. Time would soon tell.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A brilliant scientist commits himself to a sanitarium. Ten years later, a reporter comes to interview. The scientist tells his secret.

To be honest, I was a bit disappointed at the twist at the end. I felt like the author took a few literary shortcuts.

What an interesting plot for a book! It starts out with Tristan, the "mad" physicist that worked for the Department of Defense, who has been in a mental institution for ten years. How he believes he caused Edgar Allen Poe's murder and the story unfolds.

A magazine writer gains Tristan's trust and he explains his far-fetched tale of time travel and going back to different timelines and how no one believes him. Rightfully so...

It's a great concept of being responsible for murdering a famous author, but the story is too short to go in to detail. The characters aren't fleshed out and the chapters are choppy, but enjoyable twist at the end.

What an interesting little story! When Tristan, the mad scientist, invents a time machine while working for the Department of Defense, he travels through time and meets Edgar Allan Poe. By doing this, does he cause Poe’s early death? His curiosity get him in an insane asylum, while reporters are trying to find out why. Finally, after ten years, Tristan is decides it is time to tell his story.

This was definitely a quick, easy, short read which doesn’t allow much time for character or relationship development. But the science fiction feel and the suspense of finding out what happened makes this one a real page turner.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.

This is a fascinating little novella that explores a unique theory of Edgar Allan Poe' s unexpected death at a young age. Part mystery, part science fiction this was a great little weekend read. I received the book as part of a Goodreads giveaway but the opinions expressed are solely my own.

Very unique and interesting

As with Mr. Campbell's 2 previous books, he creates very likeable and relatable characters. I love the uniqueness of the storyline of Denying the Stylus and look forward to his future publications.
