A traitor. A courtship. A scandalous Season. In the race against time, will this pair reach the altar or the traitor first?
In the service of England's spymaster (well, his niece, but surely he'll appreciate the help), Miss Mary Wilson is on a mission to uncover a treasonous plot. Though her only clue leads to the debaucherous secret society of the Marquess of Hartford, a lifetime of being overlooked should ensure her access to all of the gossip her assignment will require. There's just one problem: Mary is due to find a husband this Season and her Aunt Elizabeth, the Viscountess Hood, is determined to see her niece shine bright.
Focused on finding the perfect bride this Season, the Marquess of Hartford, known to his friends as Rex, finds himself distracted by the quiet Miss Wilson as she continually turns up everywhere she shouldn't be. As Rex considers the misbehaving Miss Wilson, a curious thought occurs to him. Is it possible that she could be the kind of bride who would enjoy life by his side and the pursuits of the Society of Sin?
Golden Angel is a USA Today best-selling author of heart and bottom warming romance.
She is happily married, old enough to know better but still too young to care, and a big fan of happily-ever-afters, strong heroes and heroines, and sizzling chemistry.
When not in front of her computer writing, she can be found sewing her next project, hanging out with friends, or wandering the grounds of the Maryland Renaissance Festival.
I really wanted this book to be good - I have been looking forward to it since finishing the Bridal Discipline series as it ended with some speculation about the main characters for this one and what they're up to. In the end, the plot just fell flat for me along with the romance.
Miss Mary Wilson is the niece of Viscount Hood, and the cousin to the trio of notorious Hood brothers, 2 of which were featured in the Bridal Discipline series (Felix Hood in book 2; Thomas Hood in book 5). When we last left her in the final book of that series, she was viewed by her family as a very shy person who literally faded into the background and was often overlooked as a result. At the start of this book, we learn that is by design: Mary is helping one of her best friends (the niece of a spymaster) uncover a treasonous plot against the royal family. There have been some clues that lead to a secret club known simply as The Society - a place known to cater to those with unusual proclivities... And her cousin's new wife just happens to be one of the founding members: the Marquess of Hartford.
The Marquess of Hartford, known to his friends as Rex, is in need of a bride. He thought he had one wrapped up last season, but the lady fell in love with another man which he does not begrudge her as he does not believe love is likely in a marriage - he would really just like to find a lady who isn't entirely tonnish, easy enough on the eyes, and has some form of intelligence. Unfortunately, those types of debutantes seem to be in very short supply. Then he encounters Mary Wilson, a woman he noticed last year despite her best efforts to blend into the walls, and recognizes that there is more to her than she would like people to know. Rex is intrigued, and he decides she will be his wife, so he makes his intentions known. Mary, who has always been strongly attracted to Rex, is shocked that he is interested in her, but she is also worried that becoming involved with him will make her work as a shadow much more difficult as it will capitulate her into the spotlight.
When Mary overhears him talking with her cousin about an upcoming masquerade event being hosted by the Society, she decides to crash the party.... but Rex singles her out as he knows all of the members well and this petite lady doesn't fit in. When he learns it is Mary, he is both shocked and delighted - maybe this means his chosen bride can accept his unique lifestyle after all. What will happen if she is unable to help identify the traitor? Will Rex show her the many wonders that can be had at his secret gatherings? And can they possibly forge a relationship amongst so many secrets?
What I liked: --- Mary and Rex were likeable, and their characters paired together had the potential to be really interesting --- Fast-moving plot for the most part --- STEAMY GOODNESS (even though this was more of a slow burn between the MCs)
What I didn't like as much: --- The introduction of all of the "new characters" at the beginning (specifically, Mary's friends who I assume will be the heroines of future books in this series) was rushed, and I didn't feel a genuine connection between them (the dialogue felt forced) --- So the niece of a spymaster's FRIENDS are all investigating? That just seems highly unlikely. The niece herself I could see, but to have 4 innocents trying to unearth treasonous plots against the crown seems a little out there --- When Mary was in the Society for the meeting she snuck into, she didn't seem to be bothered by the activities very much, including seeing her male cousin with another man - for such an innocent, her reaction was much too mild --- I'm used to steamy goodness early and often from this author; the MCs didn't really get to it until 2/3's of the way into the book, and the scenes described in the Society were on the mild side --- The "who done it" was not very suspenseful at all - just kind of fell flat in this installment (maybe it heats up in later books in the series)
Overall, I hoped for more in this one, so I was disappointed. If you haven't read the Domestic Discipline series, it may not be an issue, but I felt like there was build-up that just lead to being let down. Hoping the series is able recapture my interest in the next installment.
Plot --- 2/5 Main Characters --- 2/5 Supporting Cast --- 2.5/5 Steam Level* --- 4.5/5 (slower burn than her others; M/M and Menage involved in the "secret society," but not detailed) Violence --- spankings Language --- not egregious POV --- 3rd
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
Great start to the series. I'm hoping to binge it all leading up to the newest release. I loved learning a bit about "the Society" and learning what our mystery is. I thought the couple had great chemistry and I love a marriage of convenience that the hero actually wants to happen.
Loved the spanking and the bit of back door play. All in all this was a strong start.
Side note: not a huge fan of the narrator for this series, so I may end up reading my physical books.
This is an extended series that actually began with the Bridal Discipline Series. In my opinion, this was the best so far! England’s spymaster is hard at work trying to uncover a traitor. Little did he know that his niece, Evie, was working hard to do the same with the aid of her best lady friends. Add to the mix, a secret society, which is really just code for “kink club”, now you have danger, intrigue and lots of naughty stuff. In the middle of the craziness, the sweet “wallflower” Mary, has accidentally become engaged to the man who owns the “kink club”. The story and characters in these series are wonderful. The repetition of the disciplining and romantic development is a little disappointing. Fortunately, I have been able to skim those parts to get back to the interesting parts of the story, since they are so similar in the earlier series. If this was the first I had read in the series, I might have really enjoyed the detailed descriptions.
This book was odd. It was such a weird mix of ingredients smooshed together. There’ s a fluffy almost insta-love slow burn. A ridiculous spy plot where a bunch of ladies are running around trying to solve a treason plot. And a historic sex club/ den of sin where members of the Ton are crawling around with butt plugs and being whipped…. And was surprisingly still a smidge dull.
The Good- 🟩 The main characters were likable and had chemistry when they finally got together. 🟩 The plot moved along (after the initial 20%)
The not-so Good- ❌ The beginning was super bogged down with the introduction of many secondary characters. ❌ The “spymaster” plot was too far-fetched, and I found the girls acting like investigators was silly. Like here, she sneaks into a sex club, what is she accomplishing by standing around watching people? They’re meeting in secret strategizing when there’s an actual real spymaster with a group of qualified investigators to do the job.
Bottom Line- It was ok, but you’ll need to be patient and suspend disbelief. I picked it up as a freebie last June, but will never read it again. I couldn’t get over the premise and agreed wholeheartedly with Rex.
What gentleman in his right mind would believe a small group of ladies—debutantes, no less—had inserted themselves into matters of treason? The very notion was ridiculous.
Slowing his stride, taking the time to look at some of the flowers under the moonlight—and admitting to himself he was only doing so in order to delay his return to the ball—Rex became aware that he was being followed. At first, he thought it might be one of the French ladies, looking for an assignation, but when he paused to examine a rose bush, so did his pursuer.
A lady hoping for a tryst would hardly be so shy, but he did detect a sweep of pale skirts when he turned his head back, as if looking over his shoulder. Very pale skirts. A debutante? Following a rake into a darkened garden? It was implausible, but very few other ladies wore that pale of a hue during the Season.
Intrigued, Rex wandered on, turning a corner with a suitably thick rhododendron for him to hide behind, waiting for the lady so he could see who she was. Any debutante with the audacity to follow him into the garden piqued his interest. As long as she was not a title or fortune hunter… hell, perhaps even if she was. There was no rule saying a young lady searching for a title or fortune would not make an entertaining and enjoyable wife.
His eyebrows rose at the figure that appeared next to the rhododendron, hugging its branches as she looked about, trying to see where he had gone.
It was Miss Wilson—apparently not as much a cipher as she had appeared next to her cousin. Perhaps he had been hasty in his judgment of her.
“Hello there.” His voice was a low purr as he emerged from the shadows of the bush, looming over her from a mere foot away. Her eyes widened and she stepped back, but she did not run, her head tipping back to stare up at him. “Looking for someone?”
“I… ah…” She blinked. Rallied. Her chin came up with a stubborn feminine air. “Lord Hartford. I seem to have lost my way. My apologies for interrupting your evening.”
Rex took a step closer, tilting his head down at her. In the moonlight, it was hard to see whether she paled or blushed, but he did see the rising panic in her eyes. Despite that, this time she held her ground rather than retreating again, which only intrigued him more.
“Have you?” he asked, now standing closely enough that the pale blue skirts of her dress brushed against his shins.
“Have I...” She repeated, her voice trailing off. She did not seem to be able to look away from him. Rex leaned down, his lips moving closer and closer to hers, giving her ample time to run. Would she do it? Or would she let him kiss her?
“Lost your way?”
Her eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks and then his lips were on hers.
It started as a gentle kiss, a firm press of his lips against hers, but when she did not immediately jump back, Rex’s own desires pushed him onward. His hands found her hips, holding her in place and pulling her lower body against his as his cock began to stir. Perhaps Miss Wilson had been hampered by her stuffy cousin’s expectations and overshadowed by Arabella’s exuberant confidence in the ballroom, but out here in the darkness of the garden she was revealing an adventurous and far more interesting side to herself that he would have never guessed at.
Running his tongue along the seam of her lips, he was gratified when she opened them on a gasp and he ruthlessly deepened the kiss, hands sliding to her back to cradle her against him. She met his tongue with her own, uncertainly at first and then with growing confidence as the kiss continued, stirring his passions. Satisfaction and interest welled.
Well now. Perhaps tonight was not a total loss after all.
This book is a joy. Rex and Mary brilliantly suited and perfect foils for each other. Mary has secrets and dear friends who aid and abet in her endeavours. Mary can blend into the background and almost disappear. Very useful when you are in the spy game. Rex is a rake, looking for a wife and expecting nothing to change. Oh how his world is going to spin when he notices Mary. A captivating and engaging story that had me engrossed. I love the charade interplay and attention to detail. Surprisingly bottom games do not appear till the end of the story, but well worth the wait. I love these characters and cannot wait for more in the series. I highly recommend this book and author. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I really liked Mary. I thought that she was very smart, funny, and tricky. She will definitely go after what she wants, and she's going to do everything she can so that she can find out who the traitor is. That includes following Rex. Of course, that's not the only reason she wants to follow him. She's fascinated by him.
I like Rex too. I think he's a very interesting man. I also think that he's a little naive when it comes to love, but I'm pretty sure that Mary is going to teach him.
Enjoyed thoroughly. Romance, sisterhood, spies, adventures, and smutty sex. Characters I am quite liking. What's not to love?
But Lucas, the Earl of Devon is a loose thread for me, with the end of his storyline being cut so abruptly. No satisfactory denouement with regards to his behaviors and relationship with Rex or Carlisle, especially with that bit of mini bombshell statement Collins dropped on Mary.
Aw no that was such a disappointment 🥺 The repetition throughout all these books got tiresome at this point.Enough with the same steamy scenes. There all one.Maybe something more fresh? That aside Rex was not what I was hoping to be.I thought he was a rake, rake but it turns out that he was a not rake, rake.I felt like I was reading a cheesy novel.Either he is a cad or not.Not cool to be presented as one on the other books and come up as a perfect gentleman here.Way too nice. I didn't like Mary either. The attraction between them was not solid.I don't see any interesting part in her that Rex could have liked. She was plain and boring and with no personality at all. Better luck with the next book maybe. This was a no-no for me :(
Update: As a fan of Ms. Angel's previous Victorian-era series, I was looking forward to this. Sadly, while I'll read the subsequent volumes, this one didn't grab me. For one thing, it just took too much suspension of disbelief that four young, inexperienced girls could be leading double lives as spies. Secondly, so many characters were introduced that I couldn't keep track of them (and for anyone who hasn't read the previous series, there will be even more). While I understand that info-dump is endemic to first volumes, there are degrees and this was too much. Finally, I just didn't find the MC that compelling. Mary is actually the kind of still-waters-run-deep character that I usually like, but the relationship was too insta-love and neither she nor Rex turned out to be that interesting (did the two ever have an actual conversation?).
3 stars. Again, I will read the others; I hope they're less bland. ____________________________________________________________
I'm unclear how there can already be ratings for this book when Ms. Angel hasn't indicated that she's even finished writing it. This adds an interesting spin to the concept of ARC reviewing.
I keep saying this, but it bears repeating: I love Ms Angel's writing style and stories. She is one of my auto-buy authors, even some of her weirder books(which this isn't one of).
This book is the 1st in a new series, a romantic suspense one with domestic discipline. It's connected to the Bridal discipline series and Bridal Discipline one, so obviously there were a few repeat characters. Let me start by saying that she blended really well the suspense element with the romance, neither felt just tacked on. The romance wouldn't have worked without the suspense and vice versa.
Mary is one of those women who could disappear in a room, people sometimes forgot she was there... She's in her 2nd season and she wants to find a husband in this one because she doesn't want to burden her aunt's and uncle's family anymore, and she also wants to help her friend Evie uncover a plot against the crown. Just imagine that those 2 goals don't really work well together. She attracts the attention of the Marquess of Hartford, a renowned rake, without knowing how she did so. She also has to infiltrate his secret society because someone might be a suspect there...
Hartford doesn't know what to do with his attraction to Mary, he also thins it will pass after he marries and beds her(men are idiots, are they not?). Mary isn't sure she wants to marry him, but she's attracted to him and she also wants to know more about his friends... I loved seeing them be so confused and trying to explain away their feelings.
The book has an overarching plot, that I'm sure will continue through out the series with Mary's other 3 friends, who BTW, I think I now who they will pair of to. The secondary characters were really great, especially since we knew about half of them. Also, one of my favorite characters from this world made an appearance: Cynthia is the best! I swear that every time she's in a scene, she manages to steal it. I am so glad that Ms. Angel loves her as much as I do and that she can't control her and she manages to pop up in so many of the books :D
I am very intrigued with Mary's 3 friends and I can't wait how they will get their HEAs. Please Ms Angel, write faster!
Romance and Intrigue, a Riveting Read I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this book it was simply a splendid read and as I have come to expect from this author the characters and the plot were so well written I simply found myself riveted to the story. Mary and Rex are two characters that are quite likeable and you will find yourself drawn into the story fully, I personally loved the banter and the actual back and forth the couple had it made for very entertaining reading and always left you wondering what was going to happen next. This is the first book in this new series and I cannot wait to read the next book when it is released, I just know I will enjoy every moment. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
What happens when four young women spy on their fellow ton without the spymaster's knowledge? Three of them are in London for the Season and are expected to find husbands - whether they want to or not. The other one is undercover, but her spymaster uncle believes she is not even in London. Mary is the "wallflower", able to move around unnoticed most of the time, but Rex notices her and her antics as she keeps turning up in places she should not - like his Society of Sin soirees. Naughtiness is punished, of course, since debauchery is certain to occur in such a venue and Mary is an innocent. Mostly. Mary and Rex make a delightful couple, but treachery and treason are afoot. I can't wait to read more about each of Mary's spying cohorts, especially Evie!
I am voluntarily posting my review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story.
In Rex and Mary's story, we have two opposites who attract. He is strong willed, controlled, runs a Club successfully, and is looking for a wife. She is the quiet, silent type, who sits quietly, listening and gathering information. She happily submits her control in life and in the bedroom and this is her strength in both areas. She Is in the market for a husband but is not sure that she will find one. So much happens between the beginning and the ending of this story and I found it all quite interesting and very different.
A Season for Treason by Golden Angel Review 5/5 stars
A Season for Treason is a new book in Golden Angel's Bridal Displine world. The plot revolves around Mary and Rex. Rex was Annabelle's suitor and Mary is Thomas's cousin. You do get moments with series favorites like Cynthia but this book is obviously a start of a new series and new type of story for Golden Angel. With Rex his secrete society comes heavily into play and Mary brings intrigue. Not wanting to ruin the story I won't go into details but there is lots of kinky sex, crazy plots, spanking, and mystery. You'll love Mary's friends and the new characters they bring. As much as I adored the previous books they were heavily focused on domestic matters with A Season for Treason the whole of London opens up as a world for something new and exciting can happen in. You will soon over Rex and fall in love with adventuress Mary!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Who doesn't like a book filled with love, intrigue, danger, and plenty of sexual happenings. A sexy Master you of course, a darling heroine a story that is a delicious romp.
Victorian society plus domestic discipline? Yes, please! May I have some more?! For some reason, I just find these so enjoyable. It basically combines my love of the historical romances of my youth and my much newer appreciation of BDSM romances. Mary and Michael are just perfect for each other. She’s used to never being seen and he always sees her. 😍 I can already tell this is going to be one of my favorite Golden Angel series! (I can barely wait for Josie and Elijah!) And I wouldn’t say no to more of The Society. (insert eyebrow waggle here) 💜
So much fun. Rex and Mary are so suited to each other and it was great watching them figure it out. I really liked the evolution of their relationship. I liked that she had both old and new friends to talk to. I really liked the last couple of paragraphs before the epilogue.
This is such a great book, there is so much going on - a traitor to find, a love story and a friend in deep trouble to save. Mary and Rex are a lovely couple and the dialogue between them is funny and sweet and sexy. There are also characters from previous books to catch up on especially Arabella and Cynthia. There are new friends as well who I am sure will have their own books. Treason is what brings them all together during the season. This is a captivating, witty, regency romance of the best kind with the added eroticism of The Society. Really looking forward to the rest of the series
Did you hear the good news? Golden Angel has a new series, one that is set in the same world as the Discipline series. And this one has 4 new heroines, who are spying for the family of one of them, the Stuarts. And if it’s without their knowledge.....just a little, that shouldn’t be a problem, right?
It’s a good thing Mary is used to being overlooked, because that has been her life until recently. Her parents never took any interest in her,so her uncle Henry and aunt Elizabeth decided they’d make sure she was cared for. Working to find the villains behind a plot for treason with her besties Evie,Lily and Josie, her invisibility finally became an asset.
But after Thomas married his Arabella, aunt suddenly focussed on Mary, deciding it was time to find her a husband. There went her invisibility.....damn!
When the Marquess of Hartford’s interest was piqued, she feared any chance of fading into the background was gone. How was she to find out about this so-called Society they kept hearing about! Until the opportunity arises, and she’s able to sneak into a masked event. It makes her understand this “Society” has nothing to do with treason, that’s for sure. The things she sees,though....
Rex is intrigued by Mary’s behaviour. She seems to be a meek wallflower until he sees a very different side of her. Looking closer,he finds the beautiful, intelligent girl she really is. Finding her at the masquerade held at his house and her interest in all that happens there surprises him. The way she accepts her punishment for sneaking in delights him,and he tells her he is going to ask for her hand.
Her! Invisible and insignificant Mary! What the dickens does he see in HER? She knows what she sees in him....but surely this won’t end in marriage.....right?
In the meantime, the plot thickens, and danger is lurking. But who are the traitors? Will they find a way to all work together to solve the mystery in time?
This was a delicious introduction to the new season, with a very interesting layer of treason, and i was the lucky girl to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved Mary, and i enjoyed Rex’ efforts to ensure she felt loved, giving her the attention she deserved. If only he’d gotten the chance to tell her parents what he thought of them.....
I can’t wait to hear more about the traitors, and Josie’s,Evie’s and Lily’s stories!
A group of friends embark on a mission to find a traitor, what could possibly go wrong? Mary's help was requested by her friend Evie to investigate Rex's bdsm club. The Society was a place for people to come together and experience non-conventional sexual pleasures without the judgement of the ton. Rex was intrigued by Mary's sense of adventure and similar passions to his own. They get caught in a compromising position that forced their marriage to happen quickly. The love and possessiveness Rex felt towards Mary leapt off the pages. This book made me laugh and tear up at every turn. I felt the emotions of the characters as my own. This is a must read by Golden Angel!
This is a Historical with Spanking. In this book we have Mary Wilson who is tasked with investigating Lord Michael Seymour, Marquess of Hartford who is the head of a Secret Society known as The Society of Sin, usually referred to as The Society. It is suspected that someone belonging to The Society is a Traitor and Mary’s friend Evie is trying to catch him along with the assistance of two others of Mary’s and Evie’s friends. The Marquess of Harford known as Rex to his friends and to the members of The Society is on the hunt for a bride and he has been since Arabella married someone else last Season. Strangely enough Rex notices Mary, even though Mary makes a point of being unoticed, after Rex notices Mary he decides to pursue Mary and possibly get married to her. So Rex pays a visit to Mary’s Uncle and asks permission to court her. In the process of getting to know Mary, Rex spanks her for misbehaving. After Rex is discovered in a somewhat compromiing situation with Mary they end up having to be engaged and then get married soon. There are some great scenes between Rex and Mary in the story, there is one instance of Mary going down on Rex in the carriage and another of Rex going down on Mary in the carriage at a later time. Mary gets in trouble on more than one occaision and get spanked. Soon enough Rex and Mary are caught in a compromising situation and there is a immediate engagement and a marriage arranged as soon as can be.
In the end Rex and Mary are doing just fine and there is a nice HEA for them, however there is still a Mysterious Mastermind still to be unmasked. I am thinking that there will be three more books forthcoming, one for each of Mary’s friends.
I am so looking forward to more books to follow.
Sort of as usual for this particular author there is butt stuff in the story, to me it is hot
I really liked that the masterful, arrogant H fell in love first. She had hidden depths, she's not as sweet as she seems. She's involved in a plot to discover a spy and was surprised when the H showed interest in her. He was shocked when he realised he had fallen in love. She enjoyed his 'attentions' and didn't realise it was love until after they had married.
Mary is participating in her second season of the ton. Her dear friend Evie has let her close group of friends know there is treason afoot – and given them tasks to assist in ferreting it out. Mary is to shadow the Marquess of Hartford (Rex). Also, she must pay attention to this season, as she didn’t try for a husband during her first season. A third season makes eyebrows rise. Mary finds it rather easy to be invisible. Makes it hard to find a husband, yet easier to sneak about.
Rex is rumored to have a Secret Society and is a bit of a rake. He is also on the hunt for a wife. Comical and sensual events occur which put these two on a rather dangerous path.
Highly entertaining, great characters, and great journey back to old England with their rigid rules of society expectations.
**I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book**
I really love this author and this book is awesome. this has mystery romance a society club where the ton can go anonymously to take part in their different sexual tendencies. Can not wait for more this is a great story this is also the first in this series
This has the perfect balance of historical mixed with the naughty. I enjoyed Mary so much and loved Rex once he realizes she could be the one for him. This is a full-length novel that had me smiling, laughing, blushing, and eide-eyed because all is not what it seems.
Rex and Mary story is so good and there is a underlying story that I cant wait to read about congrats to Golden Angel on a awesome book and start of a great series
