Experience New York City the local way with this insider's guide
New York City's got it all: soaring skyscrapers, world-class food joints, plus a park to beat all parks. But what's beyond the well-trodden sights? Off-broadway theatres putting on quirky productions, old Ukrainian diners serving up family recipes, and speakeasies hosting secret parties, that's what. There's so much more to NYC than the Met and Statue of Liberty - and who better to show you around than the locals?
This gorgeous insider's guide is packed with recommendations from New Yorkers in the know, helping you to discover all their favourite hangouts and hidden haunts. Of course, with a city as iconic as NYC we could fill the pages of this book tenfold. Rather, New York City Like a Local offers a snapshot of local life, and it's yours for the taking.
Whether you're a New Yorker looking to uncover your city's secrets or a traveller seeking an authentic experience beyond the tourist track, this stylish guide makes sure you experience the real side of New York City.
I may be partial to this book because I know one of the collaborating authors but I truly did enjoy all of this. This is the perfect New York guide to pack for a trip, explore if you are a local, or just read and daydream. This guide gives you maps, detailed recommendations of restaurants, bars, nightlife, book stores, apparel, and more. Keep this as a bookshelf staple if you are a NYC explorer for sure!
No high holy tourist traps of obligation- well, just a few random biggies…
Seriously, this is not your pretentious travel guide. Nor is it a step-by-step, GPS, “get me there” guide. “NYC Like a Local” is a broad overview of the 5 boroughs that constitute NYC. Also included are a few day trips to nearby points of interest that are all within 2 hours of the city and easy to access by public transportation or by a taxi service like Uber or Lyft.
One of my favorite aspects about this guide are the tips that are dropped along the way. Did you know that many cafes and shops will fill your reusable water bottle if asked nicely? How about the fact that most stores charge for paper bags and that plastic bags are outlawed - in all of NYC?!?
Early on in the book are 6 maps broken up by specific neighborhood that show all the points of interest mentioned in the book. They are noted VERY ROUGHLY with a bullet on the map and an alphabetical designation: E= Eat, A= Arts & Culture, D= Drink, N= Nightlife, S= Shop, O= Outdoors Don’t have any expectations of being able to find anything using this book as a map. All locations are very rough. The addresses are not exact but you can use this guide to get you “in the neighborhood” to ask Alexa or Google it.
This small format book is 7.25” x 5” and is hardcover. It will travel well, hold up to rough handling and hallelujah, it was printed in Canada!!!
All things considered, a good travel tool for walking around NYC and taking your time📚
I got the Kindle edition of this book from the library (thank goodness I did not buy it).
The book often has a few words per page. For example, there is a title page for every little section, and then the first page of the section only has a few paragraphs. It takes longer to flip the page than it does to read the page. Each short PARAGRAPH restaurant review takes one or two pages, and that is with me reformatting my Kindle pages with the smallest margins and words, etc. I also tried the author's recommendation for Kindle page format (which only served to decrease the amount of white space on a page). I seriously think this author had a contract for x number of pages for her book and cheated by just putting a few words on each page.
My only hope is that the printed copy of this book does not waste all of that paper. It is a crime for a guidebook to be that hard to find information. Totally useless.
Did not get much out of the book either. The only notes I thought were slightly useful were the notes on the neighborhoods (which did not provide any new information), but I thought having a few sentence on each neighborhood (8 maybe in all were in the book) would be a nice addition to my personal notes for my pictures from the trip.
