The Rules of Enchantment was an enjoyable read, but I was a little disappointed with the worldbuilding. We're introduced to this completely fictional place, yet we learn very little about it over the course of the book. There were old gods and new, ancient evils roaming cursed forests, legendary battles I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own. The Rules of Enchantment was an enjoyable read, but I was a little disappointed with the worldbuilding. We're introduced to this completely fictional place, yet we learn very little about it over the course of the book. There were old gods and new, ancient evils roaming cursed forests, legendary battles fought in the past, but very few details were actually shared about any of those things. I also wanted to know more about the Orders and how people were chosen for them. It just felt like a wasted opportunity, because the potential was definitely there. I wanted to know more, and I think that says a lot.

I also felt like most of the story was rushed. The author crammed a lot into 142 pages, so there wasn't a lot of time for the characters to grow and evolve. It also stifled the story itself, since the author only focused on one potential scenario. I like it when multiple threads are woven into a single story, since it adds a lot of complexity and depth, but this book was missing those crucial components that really give a story it's oomph. It also meant that the relationship between Kyler and Leith escalated VERY quickly, and without them really having to get to know one another. Leith's demeanor seemed to change overnight, but it was simply because the author skips ahead several weeks without much preamble.

Additionally, I didn't understand Kyler's inability to use magic, and hated when the author used another character to explain something away instead of actually addressing the issue. She was too powerful for simple spells? Okay, I can get on board with that, but I still wanted to know WHY. I don't want my questions to be brushed aside for the sake of furthering the story. Also, characters (Rowan specifically) cannot confess their undying love out of thin air. If these are going to be important, lasting relationships, we need to know more about how they developed. Oh, and lust diminished someone's magic? THEN NO ONE IN THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE HAD MAGIC.

Basically, I wish the author had spent more time on this book and developed her characters and the world more carefully. If someone loves someone else, I want to know why and how they got there. If you're going to mention Orders, towns, ancient gods and archaic languages, take the time to really explain how those work. Readers typically have great imaginations, but we also need help seeing the author's vision for their story. It was really hard to see the whole picture for this one, which was super disappointing.

I'm curious if there will be a second book, since the ending was very vague. I know what the author was insinuating with Rowan's vision, but it would have been nice to have an epilogue or one more chapter from Kyler and Leith's perspectives. If you're going to read this one, you'll have to suspend your disbelief for most of the book and just go with the flow. It's an interesting story, although I don't think it can be called "an erotic fantasy adventure novel," because there was very little adventure and even less erotic fantasy. (★★⋆☆☆)

I am utterly confounded by this book. Not because it’s bad, but because it goes to such lengths to declare itself something it’s not. At its core, it’s a student/teacher romance. So, if that’s your thing you’ll probably love it. But for me, my confusion started before even page one, with the cover.

For a book with “erotic fantasy adventure” on its cover, there is remarkably little eroticism in it. There isn’t even so much as a kiss until 60 pages into a 142-page book. And when it shows up, it’s t I am utterly confounded by this book. Not because it’s bad, but because it goes to such lengths to declare itself something it’s not. At its core, it’s a student/teacher romance. So, if that’s your thing you’ll probably love it. But for me, my confusion started before even page one, with the cover.

For a book with “erotic fantasy adventure” on its cover, there is remarkably little eroticism in it. There isn’t even so much as a kiss until 60 pages into a 142-page book. And when it shows up, it’s totally abrupt and feels out of nowhere since there hadn’t even been any sexual tension up until that point. Nada-none. What’s more, it felt like he creepily lept on her the moment she showed weakness.

Then, there’s no more until 20 pages later. And though she’s the instigator, it’s again in a moment of weakness and felt like him taking advantage. Annnd the next time she’s asleep when he starts. She wakes up to him panting and “prying” under her robe. (There’s only one more sex scene after that, but I’m pleased to say it’s not creepy.) None of these scenes are explicit or frequent enough for me to consider the book erotic. It’s not even as titillating as a standard romance novel.

I don’t usually chronicle every episode. But I’m trying to make two points, that almost every single sexual encounter seems to be icky and problematic in a way that compromises its appeal for me, and that the book does not earn it’s “erotic” stripes.

And honestly, there isn’t really much adventure in this supposed “erotic fantasy adventure” either. And what very little there is, the heroine doesn’t much participate in. (The book is definitely a prime example of a book with a female main character that is overshadowed by the male characters.) So, considering the book doesn’t live up to either claim of erotica or adventure, I can’t begin to imagine why someone would put it on the cover. It leads the reader to false expectations and then disappointment. The book stands fine as what it is. So, why claim it’s something it’s not?

The book also is guilty of one of my biggest pet peeves, something I seriously consider DNFing books over. The heroine is 21-years-old. She’s basically whored out, though she isn’t told she’s being sent as a honeypot. And she is repeatedly referred to as a young girl. (Her personality is even described as child-like.) A woman being sent into a sexual situation in a (supposedly) erotic novel should never be referred to as a young girl. She isn’t 6-years-old. She especially shouldn’t be referred to as a girl in the sex scenes. She’s an adult.

What’s more and making it worse, it’s not like the hero is sooo old. He’s 30; not that much older than her. But he is presented as fully mature and adult. I don’t know what twist of modern toxic culture makes authors equate female childhood and sexy, but I hate it more than I can express. It’s not even that I’m particularly prudish. I just super hate seeing women infantilized, especially during sex. Let women BE women for god’s sake!

Outside of the cover giving me a false expectation and my one BIG pet peeve, the book is pretty good. The writing is sharp and well-edited. There’s an interesting world and it concludes nicely. I’d give Tardieu another shot. ...more

Fantasy and romance are both genres that require some legwork to build up a world/romance. Choosing a novella-length adds a special layer of difficulty. Readers see virtually none of the training Kyler receives from Leith to show what a gruff taskmaster he is. Instead, there are snippets where he is aloof before exploding in a tantrum reminiscent of my two-year-old followed by Kyler’s feelings being hurt and she hides in her cell-like room. Personally, I am looking for a bit more than two scenes. My greedy self would even be happy with an extended training montage as long as it also shows how the interpersonal relationship is evolving as they spend more time together showing the sensual overtones peeking out. In this current edition, Kyler and Leith’s just didn’t have that romance or tension to pull me in.

Now, when a book is categorized as erotic, I’m expecting five-alarm, open door sex. I should be blushing or at least making sure no one underage is reading over my shoulder. What we receive is a bit of kissing that comes out of the blue almost halfway through the book. There was a distinct lack of sexual tension on both sides so when it did come time for the characters to throw caution to the wind, it felt out of the blue. The language within the sex scenes themselves felt awkward and completely took me out of the story.

Ultimately, I think I would have been happier to read Leith’s arc on revenge alone, without the romance. I would be willing to try a full-length novel from the author, but this one was a miss for me.

There's a lot of potential in this book, and the author packed quite a lot of plot and world-building into less than 150 pages.
I was very impressed by the first third of the book. I have to admit that I held some assumptions about the quality of writing in any book that had the word "erotic" on the cover and Tardieu dashed those assumptions immediately. This was hard to review because the sentence on the cover is misleading. There wasn't any erotica and there wasn't much adventure. There were a few sex scenes but more along the lines of Sarah J. Maas.
I liked the story and the characters. And the magic was pretty classic. The more you use the harder it is on your body. And different people have different levels of strengths.

The Rules of Enchantment is a steamy fantasy story where good and bad aren't always as clear-cut as you might imagine. It reminded me of a mixture between Harry Potter and Robin of Sherwood - and that is not a bad thing!

Leith and Kyler make for excellent main characters, superbly supported by Rowan. The world-building was wonderful, giving the reader enough information to be able to navigate through the world without it just being an overload of information.

I’ve read lots of fantasy books, and some of those have gotten pretty steamy, but this of course takes it just a bit further. However, maybe not as far as you might think. If you’re a fan of fantasy stories and you like romance, this might be right up your alley.

The story takes place in a world where people gifted in magic can go to academies to learn more So there’s a first time for everything, right? Well The Rules of Enchantment is the first time I’ve read an “erotic fantasy adventure” novel. I’ve read lots of fantasy books, and some of those have gotten pretty steamy, but this of course takes it just a bit further. However, maybe not as far as you might think. If you’re a fan of fantasy stories and you like romance, this might be right up your alley.

The story takes place in a world where people gifted in magic can go to academies to learn more about spells and such. There’s an Order of Shadows, an Order of Light and an Order of Sight. Each school has a different focus on the magical arts. Beyond the magic schools, the world lives in the shadow of an event that happened long ago. A sorcerer named Malantheus and his followers crafted a powerful gauntlet that could rule the dead. They rebelled against the kingdoms of the world as they wanted to cast off the restrictions placed on magic. Malantheus was stopped, the gauntlet locked away, and his followers were doomed as spirits to haunt an enchanted forest. All of that creates the backdrop for the world.

At the heart of it all is a young scholar named Kyler and a rebellious sorcerer named Leith. Kyler is summoned by her superiors and is informed that she is being given another chance at learning magic and becoming a sorceress. She’s tasked with going out into the enchanted forest to submit herself as an apprentice to Leith who has been far too long without one. Their ulterior motive is to use her to spy on Leith and to prevent him from becoming too powerful as love and lust interferes with the use of magic. Off in his own self-isolation, Leith has been planning on a way to find and recapture the gauntlet of Malantheus so he can use its power for his own desires. Thus the two characters are put together and the stage is set.

From there, the story does some of the things you might expect. Kyler does lessons with Leith in order to learn how to use magic. She struggles and eventually has success. As they spend more and more time with each other, they grow closer and more attracted to each other. Eventually you get some steamy romance scenes, and then Kyler has to make a decision. Does she give up on the order and join Leith in his quest for the gauntlet, or does she try to stop him?

That’s where things get a bit fun. It doesn’t go exactly the way you might think. There’s some twists and turns as they run into challenges and make decisions. Their relationship is put to the test, and in the end, it’s a pretty good story. Now it’s worth mentioning that this book is only 142 pages, so it’s a quick read. However, it is a complete story. It doesn’t feel rushed with the low page count. Rather it just doesn’t get bogged down with worldbuilding, side quests or filler. The focus stays on the main characters and the inevitable draw of the ancient gauntlet.

So, if you’ve never read an erotic fantasy adventure story before, The Rules of Enchantment is actually worth checking out. The “erotic” part of the story is barely 5% of the book, so you get lots of actual story to enjoy. And it’s very much a fantasy novel with lots of magic and some fantastical creatures. Plus, if you like romance, there’s lots of that, though it doesn’t overwhelm the book, it’s just part of driving force of the narrative. All in all, I give this one a four out of five. ...more

My main problem with this book is that it is not erotic, nor was it an adventure. On the front cover, it says erotic fantasy adventure and that is not the book I read.

There is literally no sexual tension between either of the main characters in the book, and then they have sex around halfway through the novella without any build-up. They have sex a few other times in the book, but all the times are not sexy situations and one or the other of the characters are either giving in, doing it against their better judgement or doing it right after the other person didn’t trust them (ie Leith). Plus as other reviewers noted, not mention of contraception (magical potion or otherwise).

Set aside the problematic nature that Kyler is unwittingly sent in as a honey pot in power skewed dynamic hoping she’ll “distract” this Master wizard from his evil plans with no magic at all to help protect herself, Kyler’s character wasn’t terrible. But just when she begins to see that she has much more power than she thought, she’s completely ineffective in the ending “adventure”, and literally gets captured and left behind.

Her friend and would-be paramour Rowan ends up being a whiney little B throughout the book. I was interested in the beginning when she is told by the seer boy not to placate him when he declares his feelings. This made me think they were going to resolve into a deep friendship. But not really, he ends up almost killing her Master bringing sellswords to the woods and causes more harm than good really.

So while the world-building in the book was interesting, the scope of the world felt too ambitious for a novella. There were too many world points brought up that didn’t have time to resolve, and the romance felt very forced and unnecessary. Which is a bummer, because I enjoyed the first 20 pages quite a bit, but never felt delivered on.

This was almost a DNF for me, which is pretty crazy considering its only 140 pages.

I didn’t believe her just abandoning her principles, nor did the romance work for me. Also was upset she got left out of the adventure (if you can call it that).

The first thing I want to say is that this book was a bit too fast for me. I think this story had a lot of interesting plot points and the world-building was definitely there. This book also had an interesting magic system, that allows casters to pick their words of magic, which I found very interesting. I had zero expectations going into this story.
I went in completely blind. I didn’t read the description, this author was new to me, and I can’t honestly say that I’ve ever read an “erotic fantasy adventure” before. I was intrigued, and I was excited to see what this book would bring me.
The cover is unique, and colorful, yet it also had this slight promise of darkness that really drew me in.
So what did I think?
Well--
I really liked it.
This story weaves an intricate, and suspenseful tale full of I had zero expectations going into this story.
I went in completely blind. I didn’t read the description, this author was new to me, and I can’t honestly say that I’ve ever read an “erotic fantasy adventure” before. I was intrigued, and I was excited to see what this book would bring me.
The cover is unique, and colorful, yet it also had this slight promise of darkness that really drew me in.
So what did I think?
Well--
I really liked it.
This story weaves an intricate, and suspenseful tale full of lore, politics, and deception. The world is built so well that I felt like I was experiencing this story, instead of just reading it. The characters each hold their own unique voices well, and were so captivating that I wanted to know more about every single one of them. This story holds a setting so well written that you both want to live here, but not at the same time. The suspense and the surprises build, and remain unpredictable, and the events keep you on the edge of your seat.
I love a lot of angst, and although the angst wasn’t super strong, there was still enough to keep me invested the entire time.
This story was absolutely a fantasy adventure.
I, however, still have some constructive criticism...
First of all, I am not a typical erotic story reader.
It’s not really my thing, but I can hang, so I do read them from time to time.
For me, this story lacked the sexual tension, and the build up needed to make this truly an erotic read. Their first kiss felt a little rushed, and completely out of place.
It was like “Bam! Here I am!”
The sex scenes were hot, really hot actually, but I felt there could have been just a little bit more of them.
I am not a sexy-time scene expert.
You are more than welcome to disagree with me.
I'll even admit that I hate writing sex scenes myself, so take my opinion on this particular subject, with a grain of salt.
I basically just wanted more, and am whining a little bit about it. <3
The last bit of constructive criticism I have, and I swear, I’ll be done, is that the ending did give me hopeful thoughts, but it left me feeling like it needed maybe a paragraph, or three, more to fully give me what I really wanted.
I wanted a little more closure, but it was still a pretty decent ending.
I’m just a really greedy reader, and want more. 😏
That’s all I have to say about this book.
I promise.
I genuinely liked this book, and I am super excited to see what other stories this author dreams up. She is a talent that I am looking forward to exploring for many books to come. I definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a fantastic fantasy story, because this story really hits the fantasy adventure mark! ...more

So I will start out by saying that I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. With that being said, I was actually pleasantly surprised. I had not previously heard of Wendy Tardieu but I love a good fantasy read so I figured why not give it a shot? It is marketed towards readers who are a fan of fantasy and erotica. I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. I enjoy the odd fantasy novel but given this was billed as an 'erotic fantasy adventure novel' but I had fears of an unholy meeting of Sword of Shannara and Mills and Boon. To give credit where it's due, it is actually a very well written book. The world it is set in will be familiar to most fantasy readers but doesn't plagiarise Tolkien as much as many others shamelessly do. When I started this, I was a little bit apprehensive... This wasn't really my usual genre. I've just recently finished a romantic paranormal duet, and I thought I start this one too.

I enjoyed the book from the first page to the last. It wasn't dragging like other books in this genre usually are. This story is billed as “An Erotic Fantasy Adventure Novel”. I’ll give it fantasy adventure and there are some sex scenes but I don’t think it qualifies as erotic. The cover freaked me out because there is a set of extra hands. That being said it was a fun escape and an interesting world. The characters are multidimensional and interesting. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
