I am so very excited for you guys to meet Phoebe and Hugh! I've gotten so many emails and messages asking for her story since she was featured in How to Marry a Marquess (Wedded by Scandal, #3) by Stacy Reid . I hadn't planned to do a book for her, and I started her story at least three different times, with another hero than Hugh.

It wasn't coming together, and in frustration, I put down this book. Almost two years later, one day, I got an email from a reader who said that she read How to Marry a Marquess several times, and when she reached the end, s

Hugh Winthrop, the future Earl of Albury, has a problem: his father wants him to get married to a lady of the ton ASAP. The reason for the rush? The current Earl of Albury is dying, and he wants to ensure that his beloved children are cared for in his absence. His 3 children have been removed from society for some time as there are rumors that none of them are the legitimate issue of the earl, which, judging from their physical differences and the fact that his former wife

What a unique historical romance that included several topics and issues that I’ve never experienced before in past HRs.

Phoebe was wonderfully brave to take steps that other young women of her time would have never even considered. Just writing to the Gentleman of Distinction and Wealth in response to his advertisement for a wife put her a step above other ladies in my opinion. She wanted to control her own life and yet she was continually caught in a tangle and found her path blocked each way

I received a free copy free from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I don’t even know how to put into words just how much I loved reading “When The Earl Met His Match”. It was my first read by Stacey Reid, just WOW!! I don’t want to give anything away, for me the words flew like a breeze, the way Stacy writes about her characters it made me fall in love with Hugh and Phoebe. It will definitely be a reread for me it’s a 5 star read though it deserves so much more.

Happy Reading

What a refreshingly delightful story. A page turner with really likeable characters and a well developed story.

Lady Phoebe Maitland, afraid of the marriage arrangement her parents secured for her, decided to forge her own path. Hugh Winthrop, the future Earl of Albury, who had fallen ill and now tends a sick father, decided to advertise for a wife in the London paper instead of spending the time courting someone at the ton's gatherings.

When Hugh Winthrop, the future Earl of Albury advertises for a wife, what he doesn't expect are the letters that come to delight him from The Curious Lady aka Lady Phoebe Maitland. Lady Phoebe Maitland expected to marry for nothing less than love, until the man she gave her trust to turned out to be a cowardly cur. Hearing her mother talk about sending her away and giving away her baby once it is born, Phoebe takes matters in to her own hands and goes to the home of the man she had been writing ...more

Forced to flee!

A marriage of convenience trope that has a few interesting twists. Hugh Winthrop, the future Earl of Albury responds to his father's prompting to find a wife. He advertises in the newspaper, and a bantering conversation opens up between him and anonymous lady sender.
Lady Phoebe Maitland is doing all she can to avoid an arranged marriage. I must say I totally disliked Phoebe's parents. Phoebe is sister to Richard the Marquess Westfall, whom we met in the very enjoyable "How to Mar

there is something so sweet about this book; plotline & leading couple!
I loved the tenderness between Hugh and Phoebe.. the fact that the hero is deaf and the heroine being pregnant with another man's baby is a unique plot I don't see all that much in historicals..

It was nice but I though Phoebe was very immature. Ofc she's only 19 years old... and the story felt a little surreal. Where you know the ton has so many prejudices against so many things, it was incredible that a family would accept the things that happened with open arms right from the start...

To please his dying father, Hugh Winthrop, Viscount Huxley and future Earl of Albury, agrees to marry. Due to rumors that he and his siblings aren’t true offspring of the Earl, the Winthrops have avoided society for many years, so Hugh decides the most expedient option is to advertise anonymously for a wife in a London paper. He doesn’t expect to receive anonymous replies from a woman, nor for those replies to reveal a lady who is as jaded and unbelieving in love as he is. When this mystery woma ...more

Well, Stacy Reid has quickly become an auto-buy author for me, so I was absolutely gleeful when I saw this was up for request.

I loved Phoebe and Hugh. She’s delightfully sassy and goes after what she wants. Hugh is all gruff exterior, but he doesn’t know he’s a marshmallow. I truly loved reading these two get to know each other.

Plot wise, it was good. The unconventional relationship progressed organically; although I could have done with a million more scenes of them in the garden and definite

I enjoyed Hugh & Phoebe’s story. It definitely offered unique issues in comparison to many other historical romances. These two bonded in an unconventional way and then entered into a marriage of convenience. I enjoyed the Old Earl, sister Caroline and of course the h & H. Phoebe’s family was frustrating, but played their part appropriately. Lots of passion, plenty of angst and growing in character. I’m really enjoying Reid’s stories and looking forward to the series continuing.

I really want to like this author but I've bought 12 books and if find the writing inconsistent. This book was better than others, but still had annoying issues. I didn't see the point of the opening chapter with the 'Wolf' as the link to the story was so weak, why bother? They both had challenges, he's mute, she's pregnant and I liked their slow burn love story. But he turned on her, why? I know the death of his father was an issue, but his father had accepted his son's decision, was pleased ab ...more

Oh dear, oh dear. This was one of the loveliest story that I've ever read! I was like a watering pot. I just couldn't stop crying. There were two things that took me by surprise in this book. One was a good surprise and another, a trope I didn't like.

So, this is the story of Hugh Wintrop, the future earl that desperately in need of a wife that he posted an add in the papers for an agreeable wife and so so. The surprise that I didn't discover from the blurb was that Hugh was actually mute (don't know if that's a spoiler but yeaaahh). I love this representation in romance, and I love to see how a couple trying to adapt, comp

Stacy Reid has been an auto-buy for me and I love marriage of convenience stories...except when the heroine is already pregnant by another man. This trope just kills the romance for me. I prefer to read about love that's fresh and new; pregnancy with another man's baby blights the fantasy.

As a mute, Hugh is an unusual hero. I just wished that he would have won over his heroine based upon his character, rather than someone for Phoebe to hide behind because she was so stupid and naive. But Hugh v

{Many thanks to Netgalley and Entangled for a copy in exchange for an honest review.}

This is a book that is packed with emotion. It actually reminded me a lot of all the old school historical romances with the amount of heart-rending moments.

I also don't think I've read a heroine like Phoebe recently, she starts off very naive, a typical debutante character who is innocent and believes that love will triumph over everything else. She is very impetuous and doesn't think things through--a trait t

It's hard to give too many details on this one without spoiling it, but I'll sketch the basic beginning. Phoebe is the daughter of a controlling duke, set to marry her off to an old man for political reasons. Hugh is heir to an Earl who grew up fairly isolated in the Scottish countryside. Hugh advertises for a wife in the London paper, Phoebe responds sassily to criticize his wife hunting methods, and they begin a correspondence. When Phoebe is forced to flee England and her terrible betrothal, ...more

Every time I read one of Stacy Reid's books, I am awestruck at her talent for writing such wonderful stories. It's no wonder this author is a "must read" for me!!

I so loved Hugh and Phoebe's story, it's so full of passion and emotional angst, with a hero who has a disability and is distrustful of love and a heroine who will stop at nothing to make him change his mind. Beautifully written with a very touching storyline. Love doesn't have to hurt if you just let it into your heart.

My first book of 2021 and it was a great one.
It doesn’t happen often but I loved our heroine so much in this one. She was so proactive and spoke her mind but also had doubts.

This story had me hooked from the beginning when Phoebe spotted a wolf outside. That whole prologue had me hooked.

But Hugh our hero was really interesting character. I never read a character like that. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m not going to say more.

New author to me but I will definitely read more by her. Cha

My first book by this author and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it.

I love heroes who are disadvantaged in some way but manage to make it possible and live their life fully. Hugh is mute so he seeks a wife in a rather unconventional way – by publishing an add in a newspaper. He doesn’t believe in love and wants to marry because that’s what his father wanted for him.

Phoebe isn’t looking for love either because she was hurt by the worst possible way. She was intrigued by

This was such a great read! Two very engaging characters in Phoebe and Hugh. Hugh has his problems and his views were very influenced by his father. Phoebe has very controlling parents and were not any help to her when she needed them. There was just so much to enjoy about this book, how they felt about each other and whether they could come to terms with this. I’ve always enjoyed Stacey’s books and this was no exception. Great story! A serendipitous premise and a lovely execution of this unusual romance. The characters are very engaging and the exchange of letters throughout the story tell much about their feelings and outlooks. Hugh and Phoebe’s HEA is hard won, but what a fabulous journey we enjoy along the way!

Ever since I finished the last Wedded by Scandal book, How to Marry a Marquess, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Phoebe Maitland’s story. Stacy Reid did not disappoint. I was swept away by When the Earl Met His Match from the very first page, losing track of time until I looked up upon finishing the book. Ms. Reid’s writing is just that addictive.

Phoebe may come from wealth and power, but that doesn’t equal freedom. She’s had to bank the inner fire in her to be the

I’ve always always loved pregnant heroines. I’m also a sucker for disabled characters so Hugh and Phoebe certainly got to me.

But if there’s one thing I’m not a great fan of here, it’s the overuse/explanation of visceral reactions. Another thing I find quite bothersome is “an unreadable emotion, an unknown reaction, an unexplainable feeling shuddered through his/her spine” it gets a bit much, though I know it’s to show the H and h are growing attracted and don’t know it yet.

I’m so glad I finishe
