WHOSE BIG RIG? is a delightful board book that takes children through the vehicles involved in building a light rail, beginning with the tunnel borer through the excavator, bulldozers, and more. Each page features a task that needs to be completed, followed by asking whose big rig this is on one side, while the other side features a vehicle with its key parts labeled on the outside of a flap. Lifting the flap gives the job name of the person who operates that vehicle, along with a comment bubble about what they are doing.
What I loved: This is a fantastic book for construction vehicle enthusiasts. Although little ones might not yet be able to put all the jobs together themselves, they can appreciate the different tasks and vehicles that do them. The labeled vehicle parts were especially cool, as many adults may not know what all the parts are called. The illustrations are full of bright colors and feature the vehicles front and center, keeping young readers' attentions.
The font is clear and easy to read, and the flaps are nice and sturdy, the size of the whole page. This makes for large illustrations and plenty of fun.
Final verdict: WHOSE BIG RIG? is a delightful lift-the-flap board book with bright colors and lots of construction vehicles. Recommend for toddlers and preschoolers who are into trucks!

May 24, 2021This is so cool. I never knew about 80% of this. Young readers will know some of the big rigs (like an excavator, bucket truck), but there are plenty they won't (tunnel borer, tie dragon, among others). The author expertly layers individual pieces of equipment and the specialties of the people who use them AND tells a story about building a light rail. So much to "dig" in this book. The call-and-response format is perfect for this audience, as are the big lift-the-flap pages.

This nonfiction board book is a follow-up to Buzzeo's Whose Truck. Six specialized rigs that are used to build a light-rail system are introduced. Although little ones probably won't guess who is operating the big rigs, the information is easy to understand and clearly labeled. This will be of special interest to little ones who are familiar with light-rail transportation.

Ah, this is a fresh take on a book about big machines. A group of people using heavy equipment is building a light-rail. Each page reveals part of a piece of heavy equipment and it is up to the child to try to identify it. All the parts of the equipment are labeled. And everything comes together in a lovely way in the conclusion.

June 24, 2021Again, I love that there are parts that are for older kids with all the specialty names of rigs and for younger you can just read the text.
