Julie - One Book More
A story of revenge, redemption, and fighting for the people and things that are most important to you, Shot Through the Heart is a great historical romance. The story begins when Shiloh seeks Dr. Sydney Cantrell’s help in removing glass from various parts of his body. Shiloh is intrigued by the fiercely independent doctor, and a relationship slowly forms. However, Shiloh seeks vengeance against the men who killed his sister and nephew, and Sydney refuses to let anything get in the way of her car ...more

Andrea Downing’s novel, Shot Through the Heart, starts with Wyoming rancher Shiloh Coltrane crashing through the plate glass window of the Painted Lady saloon for asking the wrong person about the whereabouts of his brother-in-law, Oswald Parmeter, who he believes is partly responsible for the murder of Shiloh’s sister and her little boy. The saloon owner suggests that Shiloh go across the street to see Sydney Cantrell, the new doctor in town to attend t

When Dr. Sydney Cantrell meets Shiloh Coltrane, a handsome cowboy, she has little time for anything but taking care of her patients. Then he shows up in her rough little clinic with charm and a physique that is “a prime example of why a female shouldn’t be a doctor, according to her last professor.” He also reveals an injury that makes her blush. Committed to her healing work, the deprived and starving Indians near the fort, and her unfinished business back East, she fights the attraction. Besid ...more

Shot Through the Heart by Andrea Downing is an old-fashioned cowboy story with a little romance thrown in. Shiloh Coltrane has come to town to discover that his sister and her son are dead, probably at the hand of her husband. He has been a hired gun for years but this is personal. He is a good man at heart. His friends, Bones, is an example of that. Bones is black and some people in Texas didn't take kindly to that fact. Shiloh got him out of there and they became a team. He meets the doctor af ...more

Shiloh Coltrane and Sydney Cantrell could not be more opposite in every aspect of life: He’s a rough, uncultured Westerner while she’s from a wealthy Eastern family who values education. In spite of several roadblocks, Sydney put that education to good use by becoming one of the first female physicians in 1800’s America, much less the Western frontier. She’s got a rough path in front of her, as does Shiloh. He’s given up life as a hired gun and now searches for the killers of his sister and her ...more

Shot Through the Heart begins with a bang with the hero flying through the glass of a saloon. This leads to the best hero meets heroine scene you can imagine as she is the new lady doctor who has to pull glass out of his toned bottom.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve read such an original plot. I’ve honestly never read a storyline quite like this one. I found it especially clever when I connected the title of the book to a scene within it. I’ve never read anything by Andrea Downing before and I was impressed with her intelligent writing style.

The hero, Shiloh, and the heroine, Sydney, both have strong moral beliefs that oppose each other’s values. I felt like I was caught in the middle, trying to understand both points of v

Shiloh Coltrane is a ranch owner who keeps to himself. His purpose in life is to right a family wrong. He just hasn't decided how to go about it. Sydney Cantrell came west because it was the only place she might get to do her job. Sydney, I mean Dr. Cantrell wants more than anything to be a practicing doctor. Will Shiloh and Sydney each find what they are looking for?
This book includes some fabulous characters whose personalities are very well defined. The writing is first rate and easy to fol

4.5 Stars. This historical western romance couldn’t have started any better. On the very first page the hero goes flying through the glass window of the Painted Lady Saloon. There’s an instant pull into the story with the action and the chemistry from the main characters. Shiloh, the hired gunman, is the perfect wild-west cowboy, and Sydney, the doctor, is a determined and strong woman. The author places the reader in the setting with every action scene and there are several that have the pages ...more

This old west romance has well drawn characters and realistic settings, so settle in for a great read! Shiloh is trying to leave his violent history behind but circumstances compel him to one final showdown. He didn't plan to fall for Sydney, a woman doctor struggling to establish her practice, and she is adamantly against his need for vengeance. As they both face their life choices and the consequences of those actions, they work to find a path toward each other. A well written journey during t ...more

The heroine, Sydney, is an intelligent, independent woman who perseveres when family and friends don’t support her decision to become a doctor. She heads West where doctors are in short supply. She meets ex-bounty hunter, Shiloh, who’s one goal is to find and kill his sister and nephew’s murderers. Their conflicting views, healer vs killer, cause her to deny her attraction and desire and love. He leaves to pursue his goal. Andrea had me engaged and rooting for Sydney to accept the man she loves. ...more

This was an interesting read with a fairly realistic nod to the past. Shiloh was a man bent on avenging his sister’s murder. Sydney was a doctor trying to practice her profession during the time when people frowned upon women doing ‘men’s work’. Great characters, lots of drama, low steam but a bit slow moving for me.

I received a free copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
