Dive into a dolphin adventure! The first book in a magical new mermaid series about saving our seas.
When Emily, Grace and Layla rescue a dolphin from a fishing net, they get swept away on a magical mermaid adventure! The girls are chosen to become Sea Keepers - guardians of the underwater world. The oceans desperately need their help, and not just because of pollution. . .
An evil mermaid named Effluvia has stirred up a storm of rubbish - and the Sea Keepers must stop her! Can they find a magic pearl and save a beautiful cove for the creatures who live there?
the story is meh (but. like. im definitely too old for this, im reading it because of my job) but it has some messages about marine pollution or climate change so i guess it at least has some educational effect?
My daughter loves mermaids so I thought I'd give this series a go. She loves it! The first book takes a while to get going, so we put the book down for a while, but my daughter still wanted to come back to it, and it did hold her interest through to the conclusion. The pace is not as quick as Zanna Davidson's "Fairy Ponies" and "Fairy Unicorns" books, but it is still great fun. There is an evil siren called Efluvia who keeps things exciting. But what I love about these books is the strong environmental message, where each book explores a particular environmental issue. The author has also made an effort to make her characters inclusive, and each character has unique strengths and weaknesses, without being defined by them. Overall, a good read, and we were excited to continue reading the series.
Liked this one! I like that the main character Emily is nervous about moving to a new place but makes friends somewhat awkwardly but easily. Wouldn't becoming a mermaid be the target audience's dream?! And they're not just mermaids for fun...there's an evil character who is kinda scary but foiled easily enough in this book that she's not too scary. I like that we hear Emily's thoughts often - when she's feeling nervous, scared, etc, and then how she chooses to be brave. Good role models, and I like the eco/environmental tie ins. Will borrow the next books for Emily.
Sweet little tale about 3 human girls who are chosen to be Sea Keepers. In this job they must protect the seas and all the creatures who live there. Without being preachy the author touches on how pollution from human activities is threatening the wildlife in the ocean. There is also the additional theme of strong girl characters who use their smarts to find solutions to the problems they run across.
Emily and her parents move to a town by the sea to open a restaurant named the Dolphin café. She soon makes two friends: Gracie, whose grandfather is a fisherman and Layla. After rescuing a dolphin they discover Marina a mermaid who introduces them to a whole new world. The girls end up becoming Sea keepers and have to find the Golden Pearls to save Atlantis.
Interesting that two of the girls have lived there all their lives but it's not until Emily arrives that they discover mermaids.
