This book is easily as strong, heartfelt, and impactful as it’s mother based counterpart in just such a sweet and meaningful way in which I can tell by thoroughly reading this and its companion unashamedly at least four our five times with my son and I also unashamedly cried on multiple pages in nearly every read through. It’s not the fantastic and cute artwork that steals the show, it’s Gregory’s deep expressive worlds that somehow meld the usual problems with longer written and worded children’s books in that both kids and maybe more so the adults turning the pages can fall in love with and enjoy, just as I have. I will treasure this new addition to my son’s growing little library for years to come. 4.75/5

Very cute, well-drawn animal pictures of father/son pairs enjoying their time together. Children will like the pictures and the sound of their parent reading them the short text, that has rhymes within it. Maybe slightly higher-age words in the text than the intended audience, but nothing major.

Nice cozy snuggle bear pix at the end promoting sleep time.

Solid 4.5*

(Belated father's day reading here)

5*: I really loved this book for reading age 4-7. This book "had me at hello" with the first page starting, "From the moment I saw your beautiful face..."
The pictures are age appropriate while the messages extend well beyond that age in depth. This is meant as a compliment. The messages rhyme which is age appropriate especially for the younger end of the age bracket. A parent could easily read this to younger children as well based on the lovely pictures. Very sweet book with encouraging messages.
Recommend. Thank you Sourcebooks Earlyreads for access to the e-book.

A heartwarming story of a father giving words of wisdom to his child. A very uplifting story in a rhythmic style that will truly uplift anyone who reads it. The illustrations were so beautiful with different animals of a father and son. The words in this book will make anyone feel loved, appreciated, courageous, and supportive. This book is perfect for a son and even a father on fathers day. This book makes a father the number one cheerleader for his son.

As with the other books by this author that are set up in the same manner, Why a Son Needs a Dad includes hopes and wishes that a father might have for his son. Although the book has good messages, it bothers me that the first three lines of every page rhyme and the last lines of every page don’t follow suit.

A gift from "my son" on my first official Fathers Day; it was an emotional read the morning of. Lang must've been raised on the same sentiments as I was, and wants to pass them on to his little ones as well because I feel like if I were to have written this book, all the same information would've been contained within. Great read, fantastic illustrations.

I technically read this to my son before bed, but got busy to log in my books til now…

I truly enjoyed this book. Lyrical and brought heart to my feeling and soul that I would like to tell my son at any age. Definitely a great book for a father and son book…until I can get him into the big boy books lol.

I don't typically count the books I read with my toddler, because well, that would defeat my reading challenge in a week. However, this book is so wonderful that I wanted it to be known to others. If you have a son, or know someone expecting a boy, this book would be just a beautiful gift.

This book has nice pictures. Each page has 4 lines of text and the first 3 have a nice lyrical flow to it. The last line of each actively ruins the flow. It is also particularly cliche and uses words and meaning content that is of a higher comprehension level than the age I assume this book for.

Cute little book

Sweet book love the message and pictures. My son fell asleep to it. I’m not a dad, and still read it

Very Sweet book. I thought this was a story about a boy needing his dad, but it's actually about a dad telling the child why they need each other.

After reading Boymom, this book does a great job of relational modeling and making space for vulnerability in boyhood

My seven month old somehow was smart enough to buy this book and reading it to him made me cry a little bit. It’s a nightly ritual to read it to him as he goes to sleep.

Loved it and love when my dad reads it to me. Please note it’s okay if you have two moms or live with your grandparents or whoever loves you, that’s what matters!!!
