SuperBu: Homecoming
Ajay Bera has spent nineteen years of his life trying to convince his mother to let him get a dog, and despite flunking his first year of college and barely surviving in a toxic family environment, he has finally worn her down. Barnali, Ajay’s mother, has begrudgingly and resentfully greenlighted the entry of a four-legged friend into their house. However, the family has no clue that the life of the puppy they are bringing home is hanging by a thread. And a family preoccupied with their hatred for each other is not likely to do any favors to the puppy’s chances of survival.
Will anyone in the Bera family be able to rise above their hate and find the love needed to heal Bully?

Debarshi Kanjilal (DK) is a dark fiction writer based out of Bangalore, India. His debut novella, Based on Lies, was a gripping psychological thriller. In 2020, DK returned with a new novella, SuperBu: Homecoming, an emotional journey of a family and their dog.
Debarshi ran the ‘God of Absurdity’ blog from 2012 to 2015, which published humorous anecdotes and reflection pieces. He is also an accomplished learning experience design professional who has helped shape the adult learning strategy for some of the most well-known organizations in the world.
"Superbu: Homecoming" by Debarshi Kanjilal is the story of a dysfunctional family that adopts a dog and the changes she brings to the characters’ lives.
After reading the first few pages, I knew this book wasn’t just going to be an emotional story about a dog. It was also going to be about that dog’s family.
The Bera family had a very common and I would say, relatable family dynamic. Like many kids, Ajay had wanted a dog for years but his mother was against it. After many years of pleading and convincing, he was finally able to bring home a dachshund puppy. The puppy was only two months old and fell sick soon after coming to the Bera’s.
Ajay’s mother, father, and grandmother constantly fought with each other. It was not shown in the usual way that I have seen portrayed in books, rather it was shown in a very realistic way sadly. The brothers, Ajay and Arun lived in a very toxic and abusive environment. It was clear that no one in the family was happy and took their frustrations out on each other. It was a strange situation, in fact. Bu was the reason for many fights in the family but at the same time, she became the only thing bringing joy and peace in the house if only for some moments.
Even though the book was short, I could feel its depth. I could feel what that little dog meant to the family, both in good and bad ways. This is one of those books that I wish were longer, just because I wanted to know what would happen to the characters.
This is not a happy book but I feel many readers would be able to connect to it. While the story of the innocent little puppy is emotional, it was the raw way in which the author portrayed a dysfunctional Indian family that touched me.
I have a dog. His name is Jaguar (For my non Hindi speaking friends) and kalu (For us) ☺ And yes he is the Apple of my eye. A while back I wrote a story post on Jaguar(If you go to my story highlight- Furs) and I keep him in my thoughts when I am away from him. He gives me absolute pleasure. It's untainted. The reason for this bonding is that he has never once hurt me. It's not because of lack of emotions but it's because he isn't as fucked up as half the people I have been hurt because of. In the name of sanctity, I write about him. I talk about him. And that's what @dkiswriting did.
I read this book at the airport. It's very short, crisp and soulful. Stirring. Relatable. Yes!
You cried with Hachiko. You got spooked and then laughed it off with Scooby Doo. And you fell in love with John Grogan's incorrigible Marley. And then, there was the dog they called Super Bu. In Barnali, the wife who hated furry animals and despised having a dog to take care of, she was so much like my mother from when I once knew her! Now that we have Jaguar, I just loved the relatable connection of how one grows fonder with time and circumstances. How God has a plan.
The Beras go on an emotional journey to discover what it means to welcome a dog into their family as well as what it means to be a family. And the inconvenience of a lifetime becomes a party. A celebration. This is a short novella fills me up with love and admiration. I would have shed a tear if the book was more descriptive. But I haven't been disappointed and I am loving the fact that I got to read this book and find many household's everyday stories woven in one place and in one family. Beautifully, with a little brown dachshund with the superpower of love!
A significant portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go toward funding the Buzoland project. The Buzoland project is a personal endeavor of the author to create a home, not a shelter, for stray dogs in India. The goal is to give these homeless dogs the same love and care that one would give a purebred dog. So guys, kindly do support @dkiswriting And his project which I have loved from the minute I heard about it!
Superbu: Homecoming by Debarshi Kanjilal is a beautiful book about the journey of the main characters as new dog-parents. It not only had a lot to offer to those who've gone through similar experiences but also for those who want to have a pet or wish they had one and plan for it someday.
The writing in the book is good which was, of course, why I rated this book so highly. The story had a very nice flow and I am looking forward to reading more books by the author in the future.
Being a cat-mom of over 8 house-cats and another 10 outside-cats, I was able to relate to this book a lot. It managed to tug on my heartstrings and, therefore, I'd definitely recommend it to everyone.

The Readera Review of SuperBu Homecoming | Genre Non Fiction
The day has finally arrived, it's the homecoming of Buzo , as family named the dachshund puppy they adopted after so much discussion because Barnali , the lady of the house was against the decision of bringing the dog in the house. She even spent her entire childhood praying that she shouldn't get married into a family that has dogs. But Ajay , one of her son always wanted a dog since he was a little child. Finally he got his wish fulfilled.
" Torturous women! Everyone in this family longs for the love of a dog for years, but cannot have their wish because everyone is living in your fear. And you are simply incapable of loving someone other than yourself. Why did I ever get married to this hideous women?"
SuperBu Homecoming is a debut novel of Debarshi Kanjilal and what a debut I must say. I loved every aspect of this book. From storyline, plot , characters to its cover everything is nearly perfect. It's more like a rollercoaster of emotions and love of a human being for social animal i.e dog. Story is very relatable since Author has shared his own real life experiences flushed with humanly emotions.

My Rating 4.5/5
If you liked the story of Hachiko you will love suberBu the homecoming.
Highly Recommended to every dog lover out their including me.
SuperBu features a usual Bengali family where the lady of the house is particular about cleanliness and hygiene and hence is averse to having pets. Whereas the rest if the family yearns for a playful family member. The family is not picture perfect. Every one is prone to tempered that makes the characters much more believable. Their fights and arguments might feel overboard but nowadays it is common in households.
The family’s attachment to their new pet, the matriarch’s gradual bonding with the new member, has been portrayed beautifully. How the family defends the dachshund in front of their guests who think this particular breed is not suitable was the best part.
How the family fights. So real. They blame one another whenever the pet relieves itself in the house when it is not supposed to, so true. Husband–wife clash, mother–daughter in law clash, classic Bengali household.
The author’s writing will hit home. He has neither sugarcoated nor gone overboard with grimness.
The setting is India, which provided a window into the daily life of a family living there. The younger son, now a young man, has always wanted a dog but his mother is not a dog person. She has finally relented. Although it isn’t referred to as such, the dog comes from a puppy mill and is very sick. The book gives us a look at what both the people and the puppy go through in the first weeks after the dog enters their lives. They love the little dog but this is not what they expected. We go through the range of emotions this brings out in each family member as they process the difference between their expectations and reality. A good book for anyone considering buying a puppy or kitten from a pet store or other suspicious source.

Unique story of how a puppy can change life for a whole family
Not your usual cute but unreal fairytale. This is about a tough little dachshund puppy who wins the hearts of this slightly dysfunctional Indian family. Each person in this family is in pain and wants love but does not seem to know how to express it or ask for it. But little Bu brings it out effortlessly and gives it back by just being herself. This is a short novella that wants to be the beginning of a long book, fortunately the author promises to continue her tale in the future. For dog lovers who want to experience tales about different types of dogs and their unique relationships to their humans in different cultures around the world.
SUPERBU Homecoming by Debarshi Kanjilal is a story of a dysfunctional family that morphs into a tolerable one when it welcomes a sickly dachshund puppy, Bully (aka BU). The Bera Family consisted of Ajit, his wife (Barnali), his two sons (Arun and Ajay), and his mother (Taru). Ever since Ajay was eight years old, he wanted to adopt a puppy, but his mother, Barnali, refused him. She justified her refusal by chanting her very well-rehearsed mantra, Read the full review on my blog.

SUPERBU Homecoming is the story of how a sick, malnourished dachshund puppy integrates herself into a dysfunctional family to everyone's benefit. I found the book charming and a quick read. There are some grammatical and typographical errors, but not many. The only real issue I had with the book is the way the family's sons were portrayed. Both Arun and Ajay are adults, but I kept having to remind myself of that. Try as I might, because of the way the story is written, I pictured boys of about eight and ten years.
Woven like an amazing spell of emotions SuperBu Homecoming is a debut novel of Debarshi Kanjilal and what a debut I must say. I loved every aspect of this book. From storyline, plot , characters to its cover everything is nearly perfect. It's more like a rollercoaster of emotions and love of a human being for social animal i.e dog. I didn't thought this book will going to be this good. It was , as you might expect , entertaining , a total different piece of adventure from every aspect. It sets a very high bar for whatever he does that comes next. Must Read
