About the author

Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) was an American artist and author. Pennell was born in Philadelphia, and first studied there, but like his friend James McNeill Whistler he then made his home in London, and taught at Slade School of Art.

He won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900), and 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. He taught also at the Art Students League of New York. He was married to Elizabeth Robins Pennell.

Buku rujukan yang sangat lengkap mengenai teknik lukisan pen. Ada beberapa style mengikut negeri yang berlainan dan sangat-sangat membantu dalam kerja-kerja penyelidikan mengenai seni halus. Serius sangat lengkap.

Setiap artist statement itu buatkan saya baru tersedar yang teknik lukisan pen itu memiliki pelbagai style berlainan di seluruh negara. Ada dijelaskan juga perbezaan kesemua teknik pen di serata negara yang terpilih. Perbezaan-perbezaan yang diberikan itu sangat membantu hingga saya dapat mengecam sendiri style yang sesetengah negara gunakan.

Mr. Pennell takes this subject seriously, as do we all when we open the book. Among the greater (and a few lesser) examples he included are some drawings for which the narrative is that compelling that I had to go look up the book for which the drawing was prepared, and I acquainted myself with the context. This involved going back to literature from 17th century Spain, and was made entirely do-able within just minutes on the iPad through miracles of modern internet and Google Books. Given our handy lifestyle these days, why would we draw anything at all? Yet Mr. Pennell's ardor and frank opinions (he favors use of the word "stupid") are consistent with what I've thought all along, that the act of drawing is cathartic in itself. Pencil ... or rather, pen ... and paper illicit a much different brain-hand-eye interaction than tapping away on the touch screen. Will children of the modern day have the opportunity to learn this for themselves? One might wonder.
