The Roman Empire: A Captivating Guide to the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire Including Stories of Roman Emperors Such as Augustus Octavian, Trajan, and Claudius

Rate this book
Explore the Captivating History of the Roman Empire The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful forces the world has ever seen. But this isn't just the story of conquest or the incredible system of institutions that made it possible. The Roman Empire is not yet another boring historical topic. On the contrary, it wakes our imagination, scares us, and entertains us. This is the story of the fascinating men and women--the emperors, their wives, parents, brothers, sisters, and children--who gave the empire its characteristic charm. Some of them, like Marcus Aurelius and Antoninus Pius, were virtuous and wise; others--like Caligula, Commodus, and Caracalla--were monstrous, insane predators whose thirst for blood and sexual habits were beyond believable. This is the story of the most important people and events between the two crucial events - the rise of Augustus in the first century BC and the final sack of Rome in the late fifth century AD. This was both the high point and the low point of the Roman empire. You have some brilliant leaders like Marcus Aurelius but, on the other hand, you have some truly disgusting leaders like the infamous Caligula.

This period of Roman history lasted about 500 years. There is, fortunately, an abundance of ancient written materials about Rome and numerous artifacts making the reconstruction of Roman history much easier than dealing with much earlier civilizations.

Some of the people the book covers include Octavian, Antony and Cleopatra, Augustus, Claudius (if you get a chance watch the I, Claudius series on television) and Nero, he who is tied in with the burning of Rome.

The various civil wars are covered and the gradual fall of the empire is also discussed. As usual in this series the book contains a lot of information but is also very readable, easily understood. For someone in school studying this subject getting this book will help them get a good overview of what happened during that time.

The book covers a brief description of the roman empire from its foundations out of the reforms and wars of Julius Ceaser and Octavian (latter known as Augustus) to the point in which it was divided into the eastern and western empire during the end of the 3th century and the beginning of the fourth.

it is a really fast paced book about many historical events that for obvious reasons cannot be thorough. The book is more like a description of each of the emperors from Ceaser/Augustus to Constantine, some with many pages and some were just named.

This condensed version of The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire was a very well written with lots of fun facts of Ancient Roman brings the history to life. I was impressed with the flawless transitions between prior works and their reference was seamless.

A weak attempt.

I was very disappointed in this work. The author completely failed to mention the reorganization of the Roman Army under Augustus. This reorganization would remain essentially unchanged for some 200 years and was paramount to the success and longevity of Rome.

A brief yet enjoyable overview on the rise to the falling of the Roman Empire. Some names have pages of explanation, and others are just named quickly. It is a good introduction and very easy to follow.
