I think this book was published by Cub player wives as a fund raiser for charity, and that is certainly an honorable endeavor. But it just doesn't work. The main problem is the cartoon illustrations. And it's not the illustrator, but the concept of the entire project. Featuring Wrigley Field calls for PHOTOGRAPHS of the old ball field. But if you look at the publication date of 2005 with the cynical loyalty of a life long fan, you will recall the grand old park was in pretty bad shape at the time.

This is probably an indication of poor aging, as this book was published a full decade before the Cubs World Series win in 2016. Not only have the Cubs transformed from lovable losers to MLB Champions, and Wrigley Field gone from literally falling down around the fans to a revitalized historic structure under the the Ricketts family, but publishing for children has gone through massive changes as well. Gone are the illustrations from previous generations, with more and more mixed media offerings - even including internet links and public access videos.

Cubs fans are more passionate about their team than ever, and it would seem there is space in the market for a fresh update that highlights the wonderful Wrigley renovations and the energy of sell out crowds (over 3m fans a year!?).

Maybe the Cubs wives will gather together to give the concept an updated look and feel that would appeal to their children, friends and fans everywhere who long for a day at historic, beautiful, Wrigley Field. By the time the 2019 overhall is complete, a website accessible by mobile devices, as well as computer, may be a better way to indoctrinate... I mean, educate... kids into Cubs fandom. Not to mention advertise the wonders of a day at "beautiful, historic Wrigley Field" (as Pat Hughes often calls it on radio broadcasts). Then the kids can pull up a video to sing along with Harry Cary for a seventh inning stretch just like they do during games:
"Root, root, root for the Cubbies, if they don't win it's a shame! For it's 1 - 2 - 3 strikes your out at the old, ball, game!"

and just so you know, I didn't care for this one either....
