No, this was not for me. I didn't capture, didn't speak to me. I couldn't connect with the story, the characters or the romance.

Dynamic: Lucy and Henry are our two main characters. They have known each other since they were children, but where separated and met up again under precarious circumstances. We're supposed to believe that they feel in love upon meeting up again. But honestly, I just felt like the dynamic between them was

So unique and entertaining.
I love the character Lucy in the story. She’s rough and tough and absolutely nothing like the lady she’s supposed to be. But that’s a part of her charm and you really can commiserate with her as she struggles to learn the proper etiquette.

The author really gives it her all when it comes to Lucy and her personality. She has a great sense of humor and it’s loaded with sarcasm and I just love the way she stands up to the snobs.

Henry is enamored with her b

I desperately wish that this book is good. I thought for sure, with a cishet man writing it, that it’d have to be impressive in order to overcome the initial reluctance many romance readers would feel about the author. In an effort to be supportive of a wider audience for romance, I bought the book.

I can’t tell you how much I wish I hadn’t.

This novel was published solely based on white male privilege. There is no part of this book that redeems it.

The writing is amateurish in every negative se

Thanks go to the publisher and Net-Galley for the complimentary copy of Everything a Lady is Not by Sawyer North for the purpose of reading and reviewing by publication. My opinions are my own, and no one has influenced them.

Everything a Lady is Not is a lovely Regency romance that took me to Regency London and the countryside with a new and refreshing twist. The pacing engaged me from the first page and kept me enthralled until the last.

I really loved our Miss Locket, or rather Lady Margaret aka Lucy, aka Crusoe (inside joke). The life she had was ripped from her. The one replacing it, while not necessarily ideal, was more than what it could have been. Henry's got a past, but the weight he carries isn't really his to carry. It was granted him by the ignorant, and blood relative or not, an arse is an arse and he's one through and through (not Henry, but his brother!).

All in all, I totally loved it! I admit, I did come dangerous
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

When she was 9, Lady Margaret Huntingdon, also known as Lucy, was lost/kidnapped following a carriage accident that dumped her in the Thames. Since then, she's been a part of the infamous highwayman, Steadman's, crew, and forgot all about the fact she is the granddaughter of a Duke. When Steadman plans another heist, and it all goes wrong, Lucy finds herself being caught by one of the Bow Stree

This book was a quick, light and witty read. I enjoyed it for the most part, but wanted a little more romance brought into the limelight.

Lucy is the long lost granddaughter of a duchess. She disappeared at the age 9 when she was separated from her father while traveling and taken in by a gang of criminals. Lucy is a genuine and intelligent woman, if a bit rough around the edges. She doesn't understand the ins and outs of society and the ton after being raised in seclusion by men. During a highw

I really wanted to love this book. I thought the plot was really intriguing and different. However, it fell kind of flat for me and a bit unbelievable. I am unsure society would accept her knowing she lived with a man, even if he was a "gentleman."

The dialogue between characters came across as forced and often times childish, especially from Lucy. I also found that after living with thieves and highwaymen she gave up her identity quite easily. The characters themselves were not overly likeable,

A heroine and hero that meet as children and then years later, she as a thief and he with bow street. Perfect for a love match you say? A delightful, fast paced tale that brings these two together in a most unique say. Their quick banter and situation made for an exciting read to see how it would all turn out.
This is the second book I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it!

A witty and snappy read. From the first moment Lucy and Henry meet as children they have used words as sword play. When they meet as adults they have only sharpened their skills. The story is fast paced as they have a limited time to get Lucy prepared to face society. Henry as the unenviable task of being her tutor. With the mean girls and other roadblocks in their way navigating becomes treacherous. There is also the feelings they have for each other that they are both desperately trying to den ...more

Everything A Lady Is Not is the first book in the Bow Street Beaus series by Sawyer North and it follows fallen heiress Lucy as she stumbles back into society after running into a childhood-friend-turned-lawman running away with loot. Lucy despises fine society and all its double standards after being raised by a swaggering criminal, and she ends up the unwilling pupil under Henry’s etiquette tutelage at the risk of hanging for her crimes.

This is the second book I've read by Mr. North and this one did not disappoint. Lady Margaret, also known as Lucy by her father, had her life upended when highwaymen attacked their carriage and the 9 year old was swept away in the river. Her father believing her dead soon died himself when his ship to Italy capsized. Margaret was rescued by one of the highwaymen who raised her and protected her like a daughter. When a simple robbery goes wrong, Lucy finds herself being pursued by Henry Beaumont, ...more

Born the second son from a second wife, Henry Beaumont is cast out from his home as soon as his older brother takes on the family title. Thankfully, his older sister is more than happy to raise Henry alongside her own children. On one occasion, a girl comes to visit his sister’s home with her father. The brief connection over Robinson Crusoe left a lasting impression. Over a decade later, Henry meets the girl again, except this time everything has changed.

This was real fun :D! And the writer is a guy that decided to write regency romance? Gender progress is always progress, I guess. Anyway, the pacing was fast and mostly felt nice enough for me to enjoy it. I found myself grinning through most of it. If life is hard and 2020’s harder, do yourself a favor and read this.

Lucy Locket, the long lost granddaughter of a duchess, has never been a part of Society. She does not embody the typical qualities of a well-born all. She can't curtsy, she doesn’t hide her emotions, she’s too clever by far. But in three months, she must marry a suitor with a royally-bestowed title, or she forfeits a fortune—leaving her and the duchess in dire straits. All Henry Beaumont wants is to prove himself to Society and step outside of his half-brother’s shadow. So whe

A Lady in Training
Everything a Lady is Not is an interesting, dramatic, very fast paced romance. Lady Margaret Huntington aka. Lucy Locket, and Henry Beaumont are both born into unfortunate situations. They first meet as children, both outcasts in their own families, like their favorite book Robinson Crusoe. Lucy and Henry meet again in a less auspicious way, as they trade salty insults. I can say it is the first time I have read bone box used as a synonym for a dirty mouth. Henry is cold, and o

Everything a Lady is Not by Sawyer North

The book is comical, but Lucy & Henry are two peas in a pod. They are both out of their elements for entirely different reasons. Henry has been downtrodden and berated by a despotic jealous older half-brother. Henry has more character, honesty, loyalty and gumption in his little finger.
Lucy was raised by a semi-criminal with a background of societal birth. Lucy had training and education, but more geared that of a younger son than an lady her actual socie

I am torn on this book. On one hand, I like it- good story line premise, characters are good, it's a sweet slow romance, witty banter.
On the other hand- it fizzled quick and went down in flames - no romance past furtive smiles, hints and inner monologues - where was the actual romance? Not that I need that to make or break a story but it would have worked well for this book, plus, it would have helped with the scenes which most of the time were way to choppy and short. This is a charming story of a heroine, lost in her youth due to a highway man's kidnap. The heroine has met the hero as children, and when the hero received news that the heroine had passed away in a carriage accident, he was saddened. Now, eleven years later they meet up at another highway man hold up. She runs in fear and he gives chase. They meet and she is able to convince him to assist her. I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I was intrigued by Sawyer North’s work when I first heard about it, especially since there are very few cishet male romance authors, and I’m always looking for more new historical romance authors to follow. However, while I think this story had a lot of potential, it failed to really deliver.

The writing is solid, and I do think with time and growth, North could become a more engaging writer. However,

After reading the blurb for this book I was greatly intrigued. I thought that this sounded like a very clever and emotional romance. After reading it though I admit to feeling a bit let down. I did feel that the story delivered as promised. It was how some things played out that bugged me. As for the highs: I really liked Lucy, the story concept had a fun feel to it and the sort of fairy tale air to Lucy's history had great appeal for me. As for the lows: Henry. I wanted to like him. This is the first story I've read from Sawyer North. I enjoyed the development of the characters, both Lucy and Henry. I'm still not sure why Henry's brother hated him so much, but he did. The story starts when these two are children. So much happens to both of them - most of it not so great - but they grow into very interesting and kind people. I never write a spoiler, but you will feel such empathy for Lucy and probably want to kick Henry in the pants on occasion!

Enjoy this story, I did. I rec

Everything a Lady is Not by Sawyer North is the first book in the Bow Street Beaus. (First, I have to say that it should be Beaux, not Beaus).
It presents the story of Lucy Locket, the lost granddaughter of a duchess, and of Henry Beaumont, a member of the high society. The story needs to be read as a satire of what is expected in a lady. Lucy grew up out of society and needs to learn how to behave properly in it. Henry is there to help her.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange fo an honest review. This is book one in a new series called Bow Street Beaus. This book was very frustrating. I really was getting annoyed with this book. I have read many historicals and I know that society did have rules about conduct but someone was always breaking them and there was leeway given. Henry was very much ...more

After self-publishing science fiction novels over a period of years, I made the truly odd move into historical romance. Although romance is a strong thread in nearly all my works, I came to straight-up, nothing-but-romance only after turning fifty. Since then, I am plagued by the question, “What took me so long?” My awakening began rather innocuously when I casually watched the 2015 version of Pol ...more
