I was innocent, and they called me a monster. Maybe a monster is exactly what the earth needs.
My name is Sara Slick, and I was an average teenager. I worked hard. Followed the rules. Took care of my family. But normal dissolved the night that the hidden world of The Far showed up to accuse my dad of heinous crimes against the magical community.
To protect the ones I loved, I took the blame and the sentence of ten lifetimes in The Deep. No human had ever been sent to this paranormal prison.
They didn’t think I’d last the night. They couldn’t have been more wrong.
I survived by becoming the kind of human the magical world feared. Now, a decade later, I need to escape from hell before the home I sacrificed everything for meets its end at the hands of a maniacal, master wizard and his army of fanatics.
What’s one army against the heinous Sara Slick?
Escape the Deep is a fast-paced urban fantasy that pits the power of the innocent against the influence of the cruel. Filled with magic, monsters, and one badass human, The Heinous Crimes of Sara Slick will satisfy your need for action, adventure, and the delightfully absurd.

Uh, it’s a no from me.

This had an interesting premise, but for me, it didn’t deliver. I wasn’t at all engaged by the characters and I found them to be rather predictable and boring. The prison aspect fell flat as there was not enough time devoted to hat she would have endured that would have let me really empathise with Sarah’s supposed suffering. Wasted opportunities throughout.

A shame as the synopsis had a decent hook.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

2.75*

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

decent start

my first book by these authors. a decent start. I enjoyed the plot. and Sara is an awesome female lead. I really enjoy that she is only human. positively action packed. the two main drawbacks i had were one, she is twenty-five yet still comes off as a teen. I'm unsure if that was on purpose due to her imprisonment or just to keep the book young adult. I would prefer it was more adult. secondly, what the &%$# is with the Pax or Far authority? what a crock! no justice at all. sara can't be the only one falsely imprisoned in the deep. it read like any villain could easily frame anyone else and nothing is done to provide real proof. they don't even care, the ones who know of Sara's innocence. its my job and you are sentenced so your going back to the deep. they don't even protect anyone, they're just bullies and clean up crew.

Sassy and slick!

Admitting to a crime to save her father and family, Sara is jailed....but no idea for what! A human in a non-human jail Sara surprises everyone by surviving ten years...and then escapes. A sassy and no nonsense girl along with her friend Splinter takes on so much, and when her little band expands, she finds so much has changed but she doesn't let that stop her. Amazing world, characters that you will love, definitely a series that pulls you in deep and takes you on an adventure that you will want to continue!!

What a way to make your mark on the world!

Fifteen year old Sara Slickerman admits to a crime she didn't do to save her father. After ten years in a prison for Farsiders, who are human, she needs to get out.
Saving the world is not all its cracked up to be, especially when you have to keep out of sight. Along with a Farsider and a childhood friend she sets out to save the world.
An excellent book, full of action and excitement, for all lovers of the supernatural w.

Okay I guess

I’m sorry but this book is so funny because it’s got things in it that reference so much as if it was real like Splinter the rat helping Sara kick but like any old rat would do. Keep an open mind (but not too open, you never know what can climb in there) and enjoy the book as much as I did.

Really great start

Ok definitely looking forward to book 2. The characters are are great and the world is really fascinating. I love the different creatures and I really like the main character, Sara Slick. There were some awesome fight scenes as well as some that pulls on your heart. Great book one, and I will be looking forward to what Slick and her pals do next.

She's almost too much into saving the world at any cost

To say that Sara is very motivated to save the world is an understatement. It's a great story but it made me somewhat nervous at times, as Sara is fighting nasty magical creatures and fighting against incredible odds. I will definitely be reading the next book to see where the story goes.

Fun first of a series

Enjoyed this book, the MC is bright and snarky, the plot interesting but it dragged a little for me in places. Definitely got more engaging towards the end and I’ll definitely read the next.

Very interesting take on the mythical

Sara is definitely slick and I love Splinter (and the omage to TMNT)
This is one of the freshest takes on mythology and magic I've read in a long while.
Kudos!!!

Exciting

Exciting book. Full of non stop adventure, goblins, ogres, and basic evil doers. Probably meant for middle grade, or a bit higher, readers. I was disappointed there was no romance, but am excited to learn the what's and whys.

So much awesome

Do you love fantasy but you’re sick of the repetitive use of vampires and werewolves? You’ve found the right book! The world building is excellent with a badass heroine and a story that is complete yet leaves you wanting the next book.

Great read

So much happens in this book. To save her father Sara tells these people that she did it. All of a sudden she was into the Deep. So begins the story. Only problem is price for other books. Retire and cannot afford 4.99 for the other stories

Fun read but at times it struggled to hold my interest. Good characters and an interesting plot. I will read the next installment.

Not my cup of tea

Just couldn’t get into the story. Probably not the first time I have been left alone, and might be all my fault. Just my opinion.
