Did delusions conjure the demons?
Did demons conjure the delusions?

Drained by the deadweight, an inescapable shadow born from grief, warring parents and the emptiness of having no sense of self, Nick attempts suicide while in an alcohol-fuelled rage. Shamed and fearful of damnation, he adopts another identity to cope, and soon loses himself in drugs, the occult and the pers

‘This autobiographical novel is therefore not about me, it’s about you.’
The close emotional personal experiences of author Nick Crutchley – many painful – were not easy to write about in this review, never mind for the author. I shall try my best.

Initial impressions

'Shame follows me into the night,
and the deadweight welcomes it.'

This book is written with fast pace and exciting conversations laced with 80's and 90's nostalgia.

The topic here is quite complicated and deeply personal and the author does a great job pushing us down the rabbit hole of borderline personality disorder. There were a lot of parts in the novel that I could relate to. Quite an original, irreverent and important novel. Shame and per

"Exposing demons of the mind was captured in it's best by the author. I felt as if I was experiencing the turmoil myself. As a person that has been through somewhat of a mental lapse, the writer expressed the emotions that are hard to put into words. Deadweight is a roller coaster of emotions and something to take notice of the mentally ill." ...more

The author has done an excellent job of sharing what daily struggles someone with mental health issues has to go through to be seen as "normal". How many of us can ever say that we do not have some of the thoughts that Nick has shared? I found this book very insightful, allowing me to empathise with my friends and colleagues that have such issues but with the students that I teach who often fin ...more
