D'Vaire #18

Marked by Lightning

Rate this book
When a group of intrepid sorcerers leaves their government, Prism Wizard Vadimas Porfyra is selected to lead them. After centuries of denying his chosen school of magic, Vadimas is embracing the full power of his hue. Busy ruling the Spectra Wizardry, he believes the only thing missing from life is a tidier house. Treasured by the large D’Vaire family, Vadimas is content and not seeking anything beyond knowledge.

Far from the Council of Sorcery and Shifters is Arch Wizard Severin Dewitt, the Fate-chosen leader of the wizards. Little is known about the man whose wrist is marked by lightning. Severin is rarely seen, and unbeknownst to most, inside a house he cannot leave, his every move is being watched. Yearning for freedom, Severin must take matters into his own hands to forge his own destiny.

The Consilium Veneficus considers Vadimas an upstart and a traitor, so when he and Severin find out Fate has chosen them as a couple, there is little consensus on what the future holds. Severin’s knowledge of Fate is minimal, making it difficult for him to accept that a matebond rises above everything, while Vadimas trusts her fully, pushing their relationship to the brink.

Will distance, separate goals, and the ocean separating their populations of wizards stand between Vadimas and Severin forever, or can the two compromise to build a future together?

Again really loving the series however will not be remarking on every book in this series it is of course over 30 books long lol
****Spoiler alert****
main character Vadimas was pissed at his mate because of his damn ego! Just very bad relationship setup he comes back to you and you're just freaking pissed off and pissed off because he took your title? Now if we would have come back to the fact that he would be anxious and it was covering up the worry that he would leave then maybe okay. But how are you going to get mad at someone for trying to do fates duty? Vadimas literally was mad because his mate didn't do what he said? And it really was not explained why Vadimas did not go with severin? Other than the fact that Vadimas wanted to stay where he was. If he was sooooo right then he knew that they would be back anyway and it was a feudal effort at least you would have been supporting your mate in his endeavor placed in his hands by fate! I understand why Severn had to go back but there was no reason why the Vadimas could not have followed him. What kind of freaking relationship is that?

This is just one of the little lazy aspects that I feel the author is using in her favor. That fate being wrong are more than one occasion let alone what seems to be like all the time in this world.

I absolutely love this series, and this was another great addition. I will say that Vadimus drove me crazy a bit. I felt he was a too hard on Severin. Overall though, the book was really good and I’m looking forward to the next one in the series.

Vadimas has sacrificed so much for his people and I have wanted him to find his HEA for so long. Severin has been kept away from everyone during his life but knows that there is something more he needs to do. As these two try to figure out their matehood and what they are going to do next when each of them feel the pressure to lead their people. We get to see familiar characters and new ones are added that I really want to know more about. These stories are so well balanced with focusing on each aspect of the story while following a couple falling in love. You will love their familiars and their antics.

5* Favorite

Another 5* Favorite. So many things brought to light, resolved and Revealed. Vadimas was always a mystery to me, he just seemed to carry so many mysteries and secrets. Now I see Why. Headstrong, Brilliant and Earnest, Severin won me over quickly. He showed so much bravery to get himself out of his situation with no magical training. The only thing that has overshadowed the the story for Me was meeting Aleksander's Mate😯😳😯😳

Loves rocky path...

This is a great story about the Prism Wizard, Vadimas and the young Arch Wizard, Severin. The path to fated love is rocky for these two men separated by different cultures and ideas. Loved this story, automatic buy for Jessamyn Kingley. This series is outstanding!

Edit: Reread 2024

This was an absolute shitshow of a book. From my previous review I already had a dislike for everyone here and it hasn’t gone away. Vadimas proved himself to be one of the most annoying characters in the series. He was judgmental, rude, and a hypocrite to an obscene level. He went out of his way to rest Severin like trash despite the fact that he knew about his past. He knew that he was abused and sheltered from the world. He knew he was most likely experimented on considering the same happened to him. He knew but he did not care and it showed. He wasn’t the only horrible aspect to this series. This author seems to romanize abuse and unhealthy relationships. Vadimas was emotionally manipulative towards his mate. He treated him like a child and blamed him for every slight against him. He went into each interactions as if it was a battlefield and was told that there couldn’t be any survivors left. While he wasn’t the worst in such a situation he was by far the one readers are meant to sympathize with more. It is interesting to see how, as a reader, we are meant to root for him. Yet the entire time I read this I couldn’t help but feel like Severin should have left. But of course, he didn’t and Vadimas ended up getting his way in the end.

I rated this two stars but it’s been turned to a one because this was just horrible. Even previous favorites have slowly became tainted overtime as they have morphed into the most unlikable group. I now see why I stopped reading this series.

As more characters are added, the less connected everything becomes. People are left happy because the series dictates that it must be so. However, a part of me feels that the vast majority of these couples would never work if this was another type of story. They either would have broken up or been more open about how miserable they are. One thing for sure, fate fucked up far more than this series likes to assume.

So to start off, this was surprisingly good. Though I won't pretend that I know how to spell anyone's names we will call them MC Prisim Wizard and MC Europe.

There are so many characters that is often difficult to keep up with who is who and what exactly it is that is going on. But I really liked MC Europe. He did his best to protect himself and those he cared for. The person I despised was basically everyone else. Everyone treated him like a child. Which is funny because had he been anyone else they would have hugged him non stop and told him they loved him, but they didn't. No one did. No one in this story acted as if they cared for him. They expected him to March to whatever beat they laid out with no arguments. And it's that reason why I can't give this more than 2 stars. I am actually taking a minor break because of how the prism wizard responded to everything. He constantly complained and was rude to his fated mate. Lowkey does not deserve him by the way. The biggest kicker is that when MC Europe came back he started complaining and ranting about how he never reached out. I'm sorry, two way street yes!? He could have tried to talk to him any time. He saw that people were mistreating him and his rule but did nothing. Yet he had the audacity to get upset.

That aside we have those others in power who came across people from the other Wizarding groups. They knew how abusive and controlling people could be. Yet they still went out their way to be rude. Even High Count D'Vaire wasn't all it could be when compared to previous couples meeting them for the first time. Europe made some mistakes, yes, and he is young and learning. But I am confused on how this pairing was able to work when everyone seemed to be against it from the get go. Not only that, they only supported it on their terms. This does not spell good for the future and MC Europe needs to find someone else.

I absolutely adored this addition to the D'Vaire series!! Vadimas was so complex and I loved getting to know him better! Severin was a perfect compliment to him!!! As always, this book was filled with humor, love and raw emotion. Jessamyn has a unique ability to capture everything in a beautiful and engaging way! I adored every chapter!! I will continue to be a D'Vaire fan for life!!! Can't wait for the next one!!

Loving this Series!

I’ve always felt long series get stale after a while, but this one has yet to make my interest wane. Vadimas finally got his hea in this installment and I couldn’t have been more pleased. A series well worth reading! Highly recommended

Prism Wizard Vadimas Porfyra has always been a sympathetic side character. Friend to Chander Daray and staunch ally of the Council and the D'Vaires, he has always fought Chander, Alaric and his Emperors on the subject of bodyguards. In this book, he gets two sentinels as guards/housekeepers. And finds his mate.
The fate chosen leader of the Consilium Veneficus, Arch Wizard Severin Dewitt, has lead a life of pain and starvation. It doesn't get much better when fate choses him to lead the Consilium. Now he has to dodge almost daily attempts on his life. When he's not recovering from poisoning by his fellow wizards, he spends his time with his cat familiar.
The two wizards are mates. There's the usual complication of miscommunication. And they both need to work extremely hard to earn their HEA. But the journey is worth it. another winner for D'Vaire and Kingley.
