Sixteen-year-old Sofie is a dreamer, an artist and a romantic. So when she goes on exchange to Paris, she is expecting magnificent adventures of the heart and mind. Yet France isn't what she imagined. It's cold and grey, and she finds speaking another language exhausting. Sofie’s more homesick than lovesick.

But then her host sister, Delphine, and fellow artist Olivier show

This book is so uniquely Australian, even though it is set in Paris, France - and I loved that! Sixteen-year-old Sofie is an artist and a romantic, dreaming of living in Paris. She goes on exchange to Paris for five months and discovers Paris is not all that she expected. The storyline was very promising and I loved reading about Paris (I started to have cravings for croissants which I can’t even ea

I’m not usually a contemporary person, but this one intrigued me with it’s premise of Paris, protests, and the fight to change the world. It’s very introspective and reflects our world.

It takes place in 2019 and shows how two different parts of the world are experiencing climate change, protests, and their governments. The bushfires and protests in Australia were mirrored with the Notre Dame fire and protests in France. Both these events impacted Sofie and led her to grow and find her voice.

I think this was a great book, especially about activism which you don't usually see. The writing really transported you to the streets of Paris and eating croissants and layering up in the cold which I found so enjoyable. Though it sounds a bit minor, I think this is a great instance where cover art is really important. Looking at the cover, I thought it was showing an image of a couple of 20 something-year-olds at some underground rave pumping their fists to the music, not a book about a 15 ye ...more

I loved this book. It’s a sweet coming of age/teen romance/overseas adventure story with so much more! It is insightful and unapologetically earnest about politics, art, and finding meaning and joy in a messed up and scary world.

I wish I had had this book as a fifteen-year-old. Kate O'Donnell has so perfectly captured the awkward uncertainty of teenagehood, the desire to do something, to be someone, to go somewhere. I've been trying to find the right words to describe it and I keep coming back to two: authentic and inspiring. This book exposes the world in crisis and urges action without being preachy. It also acknowledges the importance of small and beautiful things in the world, even though they can seem unimportant w ...more

Thank you to @AusYaBloggers and @uqpbooks for sending me a copy of This One is ours by @readingkate

I was immediately drawn to this book. It is a modern contemporary, set in Paris and explores an Australian teenager's experience navigating a new country and new friends who inspire her to look beyond herself to the world around her. What follows is a beautiful story of self discovery and passion.

The characters in the book were well developed and thought out and were such great supports to Sofie’s

This coming-of-age story is so heart-swelling, devout and insightful; all in Paris, unapologetically filled with activism, humanity, escapade, romance, art and true passion. I absolutely loved reading the ways in which Kate writes - sincerely with empathy, shrewd understandings, and authenticity. The whole aspect of feeling disorientated, only to find your particular self, meaning and joy in life, later on, is captured so beautifully in this novel. Furthermore, this novel had the ability to tran ...more

This One Is Ours is such a wonderful book, definitely one of my favourite books of 2020. Kate O’Donnell is an amazing writer and I was not disappointed by this wonderful book. In our society, as we struggle with the climate crisis, activism and social change is necessary, but it can be hard to feel like one persons actions can do much. However This One Is Ours tells us it is worth fighting. Sofie’s development throughout the book is wonderful and inspiring. Since I read it I haven’t stopped look ...more

I grew up in the first golden age of Australian YA literature (i.e. the 90s) and have worked as a bookseller since I was fourteen, when I got my start packing school booklists through hot summers in the agricultural & livestock sheds at the Geelong Showgrounds. (Do I still imagine this place as the Wirrawee setting for Tomorrow, When the War Began? Why, yes, yes I do.)

I am a writer, editor, and ch
