“Having a woman like you waiting for him in his room, in his bed, it doesn’t make sense to me that he’d leave you for anything else. I know I wouldn’t.”
“What would you do if you had me waiting for you?” I asked in a daze as I drink in his handsome face.
“This.” He said and swooped down to capture my lips.
Emma Duvall thought her life was perfect.
Well, not as perfect as it should have been but she was getting by. After setting up V&V Events with her friend, Joseph, she had convinced her mother that she wasn’t a complete waste of space and not to disown her.
Since she had no love life of her own, pretending to be Jo’s fake girlfriend when he needed help, should have been no big deal.
Enter, Jake Vandervaal. Filthy rich with a model perfect physique and a GQ magazine face, he ran havoc on Emma’s heart, body, and soul. Forced to spend time with Jake as they arranged for his sister Jasmin’s destination wedding to an Indian Prince, was no easy task.
Falling hard for him while pretending to date his brother, would Emma be able to reveal her true feelings for Jake and tell him about the girlfriend hoax, or would it be too late before Jake left for good?
Find out in this lighthearted, witty, and romantic read!
Jannat has a soft spot for myths and legends, especially when they’re woven with romance and irresistible chemistry. She adores reading about sexy heroes, sassy heroines, and love stories that refuse to play by the rules.
Away from the page, you’ll likely find her daydreaming or snuggled up with her cat Sasha, whom she loves more than words can say.
I love finding new authors, this was such a sweet and fun story!I liked the writing a lot, it's a quick read! There are a lot of sweet moments that make me swoon!I adored the characters and I connected to the heroine!
This is a lighthearted story, that will keep a smile on your face.I'm looking forward to try more books from this author!
A cute, witty, funny, romantic short story. <3 This one was a nice, refreshing lighthearted read. I love Jannat Bhatt's stories, they are sweet, innocent and cozy reads. This Novella was no different, all the characters were adorable and lovely. I loved Emma and Jake's scenes, so intriguing and swoon-worthy. And the Indian wedding with it's shenanigans was just another cherry on top. A solid 4 stars from me. *Thanks to the Author for the free ARC in exchange of a honest review*
I love to read new authors and I loved this novella. It's a fun, living , easy read and who doesn't love a fake relationship! Emma decides to help out her best friend Jo to win back his ex girlfriend at his sister's wedding but what she doesn't know there will be some twists along the way. There are some parts that are hilarious and I love all the characters.
Short, sweet and funny. This is how I'd describe this short novella.
The Girlfriend Hoax is the first book I read from Jannat Bhat and to be honest I didn't expect to like it this much! I loved the writing, the characters, and the cheesy romance! The only thing that bothered me a bit, was the sudden ending ... I wanted it to be more ... detailed? Maybe, yeah. But even so, if you're in for a short and funny read, I totally recommend you pick up this book!
A fun, sweet and easy-to-read novella, with a well-developed plotline and well-rounded characters. Emma and Jake had amazing chemistry, I really enjoyed their banter and teasing. The atmosphere of the book really pulls you in, and it was interesting to get details about a traditional Indian wedding. Although the story is faced paced it had substance, it was gripping and even had a bit of drama near the end.
This one really made me laugh and I loved it. Emma’s inner thoughts were fab. It made me warm to her as a character straight away. I was rooting for her and Jake from the start. Loved that we got a traditional Indian wedding in this story too. I’ve always wanted to go to one! A fantastic job, Jannat. 5 well deserved stars!
I was able to imagine myself as Emma Duvall, I graduated with a degree in Events Management and currently seeking to look on getting into the wedding planning industry. Jannat wrote out the event planning side so well in-depth that was I able to picture the wedding in the point of view as a planner. I love the idea of having it as an Indian themed wedding as I know from experience, with their culture is that wedding is always grand and beyond. Picturing it with her help was just beautiful. Being able to absorb into this story and still being myself was so cute. My only complaint is that this story was too short! I wanted to crave more with Jake! If you're looking for a cute, short and light read. This is definitely the story to go too.
My favourite quote in the whole story is: "Never in my wildest dreams had I imaged that I'd be sitting next to the crush of my life in this private key." Because GIRL. Same.
Well done Jannat! Thank you for letting me read this first hand!
“Every time I see you…it makes mt heart race and being this close makes me burn for you.”
One sweet and fun reading, Jannat Bhat is new author for me, her characters are adoringly and innocent and they build a great story.
It started with a fake relationship, Emma Duvall is one sweet girl and an amazing friend, so when Joseph, her best friend and partner at V&V Events, asks her to be his fake girlfriend, well she has to help him…the only issue here is that she’s been lusting over Jo’s brother since forever, Jake Vandervaal; the alpha millionaire who seem immune to her…"seems" the key word.
I really enjoyed this quick and happy novella. Happily Ever After and stand-alone.
The Girlfriend Hoax is a short and cute read. It's light written and perfect for in between reads if you're looking for something sweet.
Jo and Em are best friends, so he wasn't shy to ask her, if she could play his fake girlfriend to make his ex-girlfriend jealous. It worked...but Emma didn't saw the one person coming she had a crush on for years now while playing her best friends girlfriend.
I like the writing style by Jannat Bhat and hope to read more by her.
This was a cute, fun, slightly angsty short story! The author's words easily transported me into the story. I loved how Emma kept saying Jake's girlfriend's name wrong. The only thing I wish is that it was longer because I really enjoyed it!
This is the first book I've read from this author and will definitely be reading more! The girlfriend hoax was a lighthearted and fun short read. I really enjoyed the relationship between the to friends, Joseph and Emma.
If you’re looking for a sweet, romantic and emotional short novella, The Girlfriend Hoax is perfect for you. I enjoy reading this story, Jake and Emma are perfect for each other. Nice reading. Perfect for fall in love.
LOVED this short novella! Was a fast, easy read and kept my attention and interest. Emma is so relatable and her fun inner monologue is hilarious. Jannat does a great job of making you love all the side characters too! Jasmin was so sweet! Anyone looking for a fun romance this story is for you! And Jake is so swoony! I want him! I won't say much else bc I dont want to give anything away, but this is a must read!
A fake relationship with a twist. When Em agrees to help her friend Jo win back his girlfriend, she does not expect things to get so complicated. Will helping out a friend cause Em To miss her HEA? The story may be a novella but you get a full story with great dialogue a lot of smiles. When you get inside Em’s thoughts be prepared for a laugh or two.
The Girlfriend Hoax by Jannat Bhat is a cute, easy read novella. The story focuses on Emma Duvall being coaxed into pretending to be her best friend Jo’s fake girlfriend at his sister’s wedding to make his ex-girlfriend jealous and thus getting her back. The only thing is that Emma has been in mad, passionate love with his brother Jake forever, who also happens to be at the wedding.
This book was funny, sweet and at points quite sad as Emma tries to figure out her feelings for Jake whilst having to deal with his aloofness. (There were definitely some Mr. Darcy moments I felt in this book) and also planning with Jo the big Indian wedding that his sister wanted. I really enjoyed reading about Emma as she was down to earth and relatable with her feelings for Jake. Her quirkiness made me laugh out loud at points (maybe we have a similar mindset).
Overall, this was a really enjoyable book and I can’t wait to see what else this author has to offer.
ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review 😊
What a fun read. Super quick, and filled with plenty of emotions. Our heroine is guilted into helping her friend/business partner into pretending to be his girlfriend (he wants to make his ex jealous and get back with her!) Throw in the fact his sister wants them to organise her wedding, and you have the scene set for a hilarious ride.
Meeting her friends brother there is almost instant chemistry, but neither will act on it (Jake thinks they are really boyfriend/girlfriend, and Emma can’t correct him!)
So if she’s dating one man how can she tell the other one she likes him? This is a twist on the fake fiancé trope. It’s usually the fake pair that fall for one another!
But as they spend more and more time together, it’s harder to keep it to just friends. And when they finally give in and get close, Jake gets scared and runs out on Emma!
Does she forgive him? And will he forgive her when he finds out they could have been together properly?
It’s a really good story, the characters are great. I liked Joseph (the brother/boyfriend) he was such a character. And both Jake and Emma were just so suited for one another.
The Girlfriend Hoax follows the strong-willed Emma Duvall. After setting up an events company with her friend, Joseph, Emma is quite content with her life until Joseph comes to her with a proposition of “fake-dating” him in order to make his ex jealous and send her running back to his arms after she realises what she’s given up.
At first, Emma is unconvinced but eventually gives in. The only problem…Joseph's handsome, filthy rich elder brother, Jake. Emma has been secretly harbouring a monstrous attraction to Jake for years but never said anything as he always seemed to have a string of beautiful women on his arm.
As Jake wreaks silent havoc on Emma’s heart and body she finds herself forced to spend more and more time with him as they arrange his sister Jasmin’s destination wedding to an Indian Prince.
This book was actually rather lovely and very easy to read. While I did find the whole storyline a bit coincidental and wasn’t sold entirely on every character’s motivations there were some really cute parts and some nice emotional bits too.
Definitely, a cute little novella to read if you love the fake-dating trope, holiday romances, and a little bit of closed-door romance.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review

The premise of The Girlfriend Hoax was cute, with enough initial elements to grab my attention. It started strong and then... it simply didn't work for me. I like instalove stories, as long as details and character development are well rounded. I don't expect a novella to answer big questions, but I do like balance.
The Girlfriend Hoax would have benefitted from better editing. It seriously drove me nuts how the author changed from past to present tense constantly, sometimes within the same sentence. It distracted me from the story. She obviously knows about Indian culture and traditions, and she could have used this more to her advantage. I would have enjoyed it more if she had a simpler yet more rounded and less brushed story.
This was a cute short romance story that had amazing characters and it was super entertaining.
This story is about a fake relationship arrangement between Emma and best friend Jo who wants to win his ex-girlfriend back while organising his sister' dream wedding. But when Jake, Emma's long time crush and Jo's brother comes in the picture things become very interesting.
The story is very fast pace but it has so many funny and sweet moment you wish the story was a little bit longer but overall I think it was a great read with a HEA.
This was a quick little rom com that had fun and likeable characters with some funny moments. I did find some of the transitions weren’t as smooth as other books of this kind I have read. Overall I enjoyed the story and would read more from this author.
It a fake dating trope romance with a twist, a sexy love interest who reminded me very much of Mr Darcy and our main character gave me Bridget Jones vibes.
Thank you to the author for my free copy in exchange for an honest review and happy book birthday for tomorrow!
Emma is being Jo’s fake girlfriend for his sisters wedding so that he can make his ex realize that she is still in love with him. The issue is when Emma falls for Jo’s older brother Jake..
There are sections where it would jump from current time to the next morning or weeks later, which didn’t always flow together nicely.
Other than that though this book was adorable. All the characters are so sweet. There are funny moments and moments that had a smile on my face the whole time I was reading it.. So cute!
Girlfriend Hoax I loved this fun lighthearted swoon-worthy short story about falling in love a great read. Jo and Emma are best friends and own an events company together, but when jo needs to win his ex-girlfriend back he begs Emma to play the part of his new girlfriend. While organising jo’s sister's wedding in India Emma falls for joes brother and realised how her hoax can play havoc with her own journey in finding love.
The Girlfriend Hoax is a fake relationship/brother's best friend romance. It follows best friends Emma and Joseph, on their journey to true love. With Emma's help, Jo tries to get his ex-girlfriend back. During this time, we learn of her feelings for Jo's brother, Jake, but she can't pursue it without giving up Jo's secret, and she doesn't want to betray her BFF. This is a novella and the perfect book if you are looking for a short and sweet, quick romance read.
At this beginning of this novella I wasn’t sure who Emma’s love interest would be. But when she mentions Jake you just know that they are about to have an epic romance. A hoax relationship to make Jo’s ex jealous turns into making Emma’s secret crush jealous. My only thing I wish was in this novella is a long steamy sex scene.
This a short and sweet novella. The story line is fun. It was interesting and fun to read about the celebrations of the wedding. I really liked Emma's character.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I do not have much experience with novellas, especially not “stand alone” novellas that aren’t part of a bigger story.
That being said, I think this was good as far as novellas go. The book length does not give enough time to really expand on the relationships throughout the book. There are just hints on how they began. So I think the author did great in the page number she set.
I wish the connection could have been felt between the two main characters more, instead of just stated that they had feelings for each other. I think their story could make a sweet full length novel.
But I enjoyed my time reading this one, regardless! I appreciate the author reaching out. :)
