This did not appeal to me at all. I was promised a 'reinvention' of all things paranormal - wherewolves, vampires and such. But what I got was a confusing mish-mash of weird stuff that was never fully explained. The universe was messy and had huge gaps. More than that, the characters are bland non-entities - aside from the two secondary characters, Callan and Harper. They were the only things that made this sort of enjoyable.

Darkness Unknown was okay but it could have been a lot more enjoyable if the author didn't make everything vague and 'mysterious' on purpose, leaving us readers not really knowing what was going on and what creatures were in this world. I wish things had been explained sooner and better.

I also didn't really believe or care about the romance especially since he pulls away and then after that, the only interactions they have are in her dreams and she doesn't even think he's real for a little whil

Darkness Unknown went by pretty quickly for me but I feel like I'm left with a lot of questions after that ending. Yeah, it was a cliffhanger (sort of) but this whole book was a bit confusing for me to comprehend. No, I haven't dipped into the wine that badly - just a glass or two. Yet, things just weren't making sense to my poor brain.

Some things would happen but then they weren't really explained that well. Or maybe I ju
This is very much an introductory book. We meet the cast of characters, learn about the supernatural creatures, and get the beginning of a story. I thought the creatures were interesting and it was a cool spin on werewolves and vampires. Evie is an okay heroine, we know she was abused growing up and is a kind person, but she needs to be fleshed out more.

The reason I only gave this three stars is that the story feels like it's just beginning and then the book ends. I feel like this should have b

Darkness Unknown had a unique take on paranormal creatures. They aren't your standard, run of the mill vampires and werewolves....there's a twist. I won't say that the storyline was the most inventive, but there was some originality to it which made it refreshing and different. Also, I really like the way the author portrayed Everly as a "full size" woman without talking about it continuously. It felt like a natural flow into the story.

I really enjoyed this new paranormal mystery with a fresh take on supernatural creatures. Featuring a spooky town full of creepy monsters, and a mysterious estate on the hill, which is definitely not full of vampires lol.

The writing felt a little clunky in the very beginning - and it definitely has a young adult feel to it, but the story pulled me right in and didn’t let go. It moved fairly quickly, not all action but definitely not dull. There

Wow, this was one unbelievable fantasy. Everly has a dream or is it, strange things for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and ready for more.

Fabulous! Fenech hits the ground running with this skillfully composed debacle, delivering one heart pounding, pulse racing, adrenaline pumping, page flipping bombshell, hooking you from the start and reeling you in for the duration, wrapping this baby up sleek, shiny and tight. Traversing the formidable trials and challenging tribulations, noting the deadly twists and dramatic turns, igniting a fierce surge of self preservation and determination, with such intensity

Darkness Unknown was a real page turner. It was the first book I've ever read of Selina's but will most certainly not be the last. I loved the characters, especially Everly. As a person who also battles anxiety and depression, I really felt the struggles she endured throughout the novel. Harper was a joy as well. She is the friend who doesn't give up on you no matter what, who joins in on all your crazy adventures, and keeps you grounded. It was interesting to see that even she had her issues, a ...more

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Everly is not your typical heroine. She is “chubby”, loves to eat, and is very insecure - needing almost constant reassurance from her friends. But I do love these aspects of the character. She returns to her hometown after her mother’s death to clean out the old antique shop and attached living quarters in order to sell it. But soon fantasy and reality become blurred. While there she runs into the man she lo ...more

This book had suspense, turmoil, a little action and supernatural characters. It was a book that you wanted to keep reading until you reached the end. I gave it for stars because of the made-up words. I would have liked to know what there meaning were instead of guessing. Everly is going home after her mother passed away. Her best friend is going with her. Her childhood love still lives there and wants her to leave. Why does he keep chasing her away? What is really going on in her home town? Wha ...more

This was a great read!

Not 100% my normal genre: it’s a bit darker and has elements of horror. Which I normally don’t do. But I read every book this author has written and loved them all, so I was willing to give it a fair try. And… I loved every word of it! It was original and very interesting, and it kept me turning those pages! Fast, faster! I love the writing style. It’s very refreshing. And the story: it’s so unique, so different: in a good way. In an awesome way! I will give this 100 stars

SA French takes familiar lore and adds her personal take and characters. Beshadowed is a fun read with suspense and a bit of a love story. As usual she has strong female characters that are diverse and interesting. Although it ends abruptly it’s an engaging story that will no doubt unfold in the next book in the series.

This is the 3rd book I've read written by S.A. Fenech; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

Everly returns to her hometown to pack up what is left of her childhood home and sell it. Along with her best friend Harper she has 5 days to do this before she has to return to her job. Everly is nervous as she is still in love with her childhood friend Rylan who she hasn’t seen since she left years earlier. But there is some weird things happening and after Everly witnesses a fight between Rylan and something otherworldly she wakes to find that Rylan has disappeared.

I’ve been a fan of Selina for a while and I have read her books before, so when I found out about this book I was super excited to read it! I really enjoy her writing style. The main character in this book, Everly (also my daughters name, which I thought was pretty cool!) has to move back home to clean out her childhood home, after her mother’s passing. I have to be honest, when it mentioned werewolves and vampires I pretty much thought it would be the typical storyline - think Twilight (which I ...more

Normally just seeing the word vampire in a book description is reason enough for me to not read it, but since I've been waiting for this series to start, I decided to give it a chance. I am so glad I did! This is nothing like any other fantasy novel I have ever read. Yes, it has some familiar creatures like vampires and werewolves, but they are completely different from any others I've ever come across. I was absolutely hooked from the get go. Everly, Harper, Rylan and the gang have had so much thrown at them especially Everly, its a wonder she kept it together as long as she did. I honestly cant wait to see what their future holds and if they conquer the shadyrs who have caused the mess that just keeps coming for them all. Loved it.

Short Version: This book is overly ambitious, and fumbles its potential with a word salad of cliches.

Longer Version, Spoilers Below: I both pre-ordered this book and offered to review an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book because I love S. A. Fenech's work and want to support her as an artist. So, I'm sad to have to be honest: This book did not live up to my hopes.

I will start with the positives though; the lead, Everly, is endearing, realistic, and equal parts heartbreaking and heart-warming.

This was okay. It was nowhere near as good as I was hoping for because, while the idea behind this world is interesting, the story itself was really rather boring. Worst of all, every (main) character was in their 20's but they all read as if they were young teenagers. Their thoughts and actions were always so immature that it was annoying. And don't get me started on the best friend being a goddamn social media influencer. I can't even tell you how much I hate the fact that that's even a thing. ...more

It was my first book written by S. A. Fenech and I requested it because the synopsis sounded really intresting for me. Did I received what I expected? Not really, but from the beginning.

Plot looked for me super intresting. We have a girl, Everly, who is back to her hometown after the death of her mother. She wants to clean a house and family's antiuque store. She gives herself and her friend - famous Instargamer, five days for that and after that she wants to back to her current life. The town

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me an eARC of this book in return for a fair and honest review.

Darkness Unknown follows Everly and her best friend Harper as they return to Everly's childhood home to clean it up and possibly sell it. However, things in Everly's hometown are not what one would call normal. Seeing her old crush attacked (and killed?) by a monster is just the beginning to an adventure that unveils the shadowed part of her town.

I really liked this book, and am very much looking forward to the next volume...I want to know how it continues!!

What I liked:
The mystery of it all, how step for step we learn more, and if you pay enough attention you might catch small hints that will be important later. I was rather happily surprised when I learned something new and was like oh right there this was hinted. I think the hole concept is interesting and I'm looking forward to learning more about the main character.

I can see why some people would be into this. It's deliciously trope-y, and has all the jaw-clenching, muscle-rippling, teen werewolf energy you could ever want or need - but I should mention, there are technically no werewolves present in this book, just sh

I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. "Contains spoilers". We follow Everly and her friend Harper and their adventures, returning to Everly's hometown, following her mothers death. It quickly becomes clear that not everything is what it seems when Everly sees her childhood sweetheart, Rylan die a horrific death - or not. It needs more depth to the characters and the world, there's hardly any description of the main character; Everly, apart from her hair and favourite outfit ...more
