Riley takes a trip to the South Pacific island of Moorea to visit his Uncle Max, a biologist. Although Riley thinks he will be seeing a dolphin show like at an aquarium, he finds out that he will really be observing the dolphins in their natural habitat. Riley and his family see spinner dolphins, humpback whales, and tropical fish and experience the native culture. But what can Riley do to help when some dolphins are trapped in the island lagoon?

Adventures of Riley: Dolphins in Danger is the fourth book in an incredible series designed to teach children about wildlife conservation and the environment. The illustrations are superimposed on actual photographs, helping children and adults to see the actual things discussed. Side boxes highlight particular information about different animals, geography, and cultural items that may be unfamiliar or in need of further explanation. The story moves at a brisk pace and is full of adventure along with the educational information. Kids may become so caught up in the story that they won’t realize they are learning.

Each “Riley” book comes with a passport and a sticker so that kids can track their adventures. My own children were so excited by this book that they wanted to get all of the other books in the series. It’s a fun way to learn about foreign countries, animals, and cultures. This series is a definite winner, and children will want to read the book multiple times in order to absorb everything presented.

Riley travels to the Moorea island with his Uncle Max. Here he learns all kinds of things about the culture and animals. This book was very informative. This is a glossary in the back. The pictures are neat because the artist mixes real pictures with drawn ones. I think this would be appropriate for grades 2-5.
