"A great intergenerational team." --Kirkus Reviews

Gus loves basketball -- that is, basketball practice with Pete, the coach, and shooting baskets at Grandpa's house with only Grandpa's dog, Skipper, in attendance. Basketball games are another story. What if Gus misses every basket, and everybody laughs? If only his parents wouldn't come. Gus is especially unnerved by his f

Recommends it for: parents reading with their children
We've read several of the books in the Gus and Grandpa series by Claudia Mills and Catherine Stock. We've really enjoyed the series - the stories are simple and warm and speak volumes about intergenerational relationships. The illustrations are soft watercolors, that have a timeless quality.

Gus learns to play basketball, but gets scared when playing matches. His grandpa teaches him a trick to "turn off" his ears, since that's the reason he can't do anything at the mathes. Because of all the loud noises, sounds and shouting. Finally Gus makes the shot and his team wins.

This book is a great book to present to my kindergarten class. It mainly focus on how you can get over your fears, that practicing makes you better and that you sometimes should take advice from older people. This boo

I really liked how the grandpa helped Gus at the last game when he told him to shut off his ears so that he focus on the game. This would be a good book to show children that it is okay to make mistakes and be nervous. The whole point is to try your best and don't let others bring you down.
