Hidden Realm (Book 1 of the Legends of Lightning series) is an ambitious dark fantasy. The story begins with Esther, a librarian in our world, who has been recently plagued with nightmares where she is chased through the woods by wolves. As wounds begin to appear on her body after these nightmares, she searches for a way to discover what is going on and how to stop it.

Most of the novel takes place in this other realm, where Esther must journey in order t

Esther, a simple librarian living her everyday-life, finds herself drawn into a hidden realm whenever she begins reading a rare first edition of one of her favorite books in the library. It isn't long before Esther is completely submerged into this dimension. A world that is being attacked by vicious beasts.

Esther finds herself thrust into the chaos, questioning why she was brought into this new world. With a hooded guide, she sets off on a quest to find out who is responsible for the attacks.

Hidden Realm
Legends of Lightning
By: T.R. Slauf

First, I have to mention the creepy, freak-me -out cover. Yikes! Isn't it perfect for Halloween and all things spooky?

Hidden Realm is a unique story. T. R. Slauf incorporates the original Brothers Grimm fairy tales as a sort of foundation to build the story on. These are dark fairy tales, and I don't recommend reading them to children. B

Thank you so much to Literary Bound Tours for having me on the tour for Hidden Realm by T.R. Slauf!  Pay attention my fairytale and dark fantasy loving friends because you don’t want to miss this one!

Esther is a resident of modern day Earth who finds herself literally torn between two realms. After performing a ritual to enter the Hidden Realm, which is a mashup of dark fairy tales based off of the brothers Grimm, she must unite the kingdom against the elusive enemy called the Crimson Shadow.

“I meet plenty of men. I just don’t pursue any of them because I’m simply not interested in dating.” “You mean none of them match the overly masculine characters from those misogynistic books you love.”

Legends of Lightning is an adult dark fantasy that follows Esther’s adventure to a realm that she thought only existed in her dreams, a journey that also led her to self-discovery.

First off I want to note that this is in fact a dark fairytale/fantasy novel that has themes that are similar to the dark Brothers Grimm tales it is inspired by. With that being said, I was pleasantly surprised to see the way the author incorporated those fairytale aspects into the novel. I thought it very clever and loved the originality of it. Maybe it’s because I’m drawn to darker, grittier tales but I found the way the author integrated some of my favorite childhood fairytale aspects

This prologue is one of the most atmospheric and moody introductions to a story I have ever read! It drew me in immediately and the world around me ceased to exist. Perfect in my opinion.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dark fantasy. I always knew The Brothers Grimm's original fairy tales were seriously twisted. But, this fantasy has me rethinking my entire childhood story life. The story unfolds within your eyes as you read each and every page. And, turn the pages you will as you try too take the entire story in. Our heroine is perfectly imperfect, whether she is in a library or the haunted woods. Esther shows complete courage throughout the entire story. As doe ...more

I’m not sure exactly what to say about this book. So I’ll start with a brief summary.

Our heroine is librarian Ester. Introverted and in love with only reading and her cat. One night she starts having dreams that seem extremely real. After a few nights she learns she must travel to the world in her dreams and become a hero. The world is that of the original Grimm fairy tales, where Rumpelstiltskin

In the debut novel by author T.R. Slauf, the reader is introduced to Esther, a timid librarian whose bizarre dreams eventually lead her to another world where she is dubbed the Realm Walker, a powerful individual who others in this new world believe will save them from the evils trying to take over. Esther is a complicated character, one who struggles with her identity throughout the novel, but you still want to root for her to discover her powers and overcome her fears in order to take down the ...more

First of all, I would like to say a big thank-you to T.R.Slauf for sending me an ARC copy of Hidden Realm (Legends of Lightening). It was very kind! Secondly, I'd like to summarise: Hidden Realm follows the story of Esther as she learns that she's a Realm Walker, able to cross between worlds, and that she is destined to fight in a war. And now onto my review: to be honest, while I enjoyed reading Esther's story very much it did take me a while to get into it, I found the book a little slow in th ...more

What a crazy twisted tale.

This story is not for the faint of hearts, it is a wonderfully dark and twisted story that tells of Realm Walkers, beasts, legends & more.

Esther is a plain, very boring librarian, whose life is about to get turned upside down when they receive a new volume of The Brothers Grimm.

What will she discover about herself & and her past. Will she find herself and become what she needs to become to save a land that is not her own? Can she fulfill the prophecy and defeat the Cr

I couldn't put it down! Esther is such a wonderful character and the world she explores is both enchanting and realistic. I love the inclusion of the original Grimm's tales and the way they shaped the world. There are several characters that I'm eager to see what happens next with them... and yes, I was upset when the book ended. I cannot wait for the sequel!

Amazing, amazing, amazing book. I loved every minute of it, everything about it. Masterfully crafted plot, world, characters... brilliant! I will definitely be seeking out the next in the series.

I received a copy of this through Voracious Readers Only.
When T. R. Slauf offered me an ARC of Legends of Lightning, Book 1 of the Hidden Realm series, for an honest review - I jumped at the chance to read it. I have to say it exceeded my high expectations! There is so much to love; a librarian protagonist, a cat, twisted and dark fairy tales, engaging characters and riveting plot twists! I was pulled into the story as the MC tried to figure out what was going on and who to trust. I chuckled out loud in some parts and had tears in my eyes at other par ...more
