As the synopsis so aptly states, this is an "inspiring assemblage of wit, wisdom and hard-won practical advice from some of the world’s greatest authors". The book is sectioned in easily-defined and navigable sections, so writers on all stages of their creative journey can find the advice they desire.
Both the writers and the advice they delivered varied greatly. I found many of my personal favourites along with their well-known anecdotes, but this was also peppered with the lesser-known and I found much that was new to me. Many of these notions also contradicted the other, but rather than seeing this as a failure of the book it, instead, showed how there really were no definites, rules, or rights and wrongs on this creative journey. Any writer can find the advice they need to bolster their confidence and can find a mirror of their own writing process in the varied advice of the greatest writers, from both the present and the past.

Kết thúc quyển sách đầu tiên của năm. 5/5 phần lớn là vì nó giống một quyển sổ tay có ích cho mình, để mình nhâm nhi trong quá trình bản thân mình viết sách. Cùng với hi vọng nó sẽ giúp mình có thái độ nghiêm túc và chăm chỉ hơn với bản thảo còn dang dở. Năm này mà hem xuất bản được là dẹp luôn. 🤣

As somebody who enjoys both writing and reading, this was an enjoyable assemblage of thoughts and musings by famous and acclaimed writers about their work. Being a Writer explores exactly what it means to be one, with advice from people who have lived through the whole messy business on their own.
Being a Writer is split into different sections: becoming a writer, methods and means, failing, the art of writing and a sense of an ending. Each chapter features different quotes, sometimes as short as a sentence, other times more like little essays on the topic. Reading through this made me realise quickly how there's no right or wrong when it comes to writing: you might be like H.P. Lovecraft, thinking that you need the night-world to get inspiration or think like Leo Tolstoy, who always wrote in the morning, when one's head is "particularly fresh".
There are other topics on which the featured writers vehemently contradict each other, one of them being the writer's block. You've got people like Philip Pullman ("Do plumbers get plumber's block?") who don't believe in the existence of such, or Charles Bukowski, who provides more of a practical solution ("Writing about writer's block is better than not writing at all."), but also writers like Neil Gaiman who say it's a very real thing.
This anthology is one of those books that make a nice present for people who write and it's certainly fun to flick and read through, even though it didn't have a long-lasting impact on me and has a bit of an odd flow to it, jumping from quoting Jane Austen to Henning Mankell and J.K. Rowling back to Charles Dickens. I'll leave you with a little quote that every self-proclaimed bookworm will be able to resonate with:
"You find certain writers who when they write, it makes your own brain voice like a tuning fork, and you just resonate with them. And when that happens, reading those writers... becomes a source of unbelievable joy. It's like eating candy for the soul. And I something have a hard time understanding how people who don't have that in their lives get through the day." ⏤ David Foster Wallace

This book was like opening a box and finding one amazing piece of marvel after the others. Travis Elborough and Helen Gordon have piled treasure upon treasure about the art of writing, about writers and their attitude to writing. I wish I would own this book, better yet, memorize at least half of it, things like:
'Planing to write is not writing. Outlining, researching, talking to people about what you're doing, none of that is writing. Writing is writing.' - E L Doctorow. Or:
'There is no 'writer's lifestyle'. All that matters is what you leave on the page.' -Zadie Smith.
I liked this one: 'If you are experiencing difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn't expecting it.' - H G Wells. And this one: 'Writing about the writer's block is better than not writing at all.' - Charles Bukowski.
How would you feel about this? 'Finishing a book is just like you took a child out in the yard and shot it.' - Truman Capote. And on and on it goes.....

I received this book quite a while ago as a gift and have only got down to reading it this year.
The book is not at all what one might expect. It's not a chapter-by-chapter breakdown of how to create a plot, or character vs. plot-driven stories, or anything like that. Instead, it's a collection of essays, aphorisms, and advice from some of the best-known, and best, authors throughout history. When you can get advice from Hemingway, Cervantes, and Pratchett in the same book, well, that's quite something.
What I took more than anything else from this book is encouragement. It's going in my office, so that I can just grab it, flip it open to a page, and take courage during the "mushy middle" and other dark moments of authorship.

Ơ tính ra cuốn này chỉ là tập hợp ý kiến của kính thưa các nhà văn về chuyện viết thôi ấy. Nghĩa là không có tính sáng tạo hay nguyên bản gì ở đây cả. Vậy mà lại thấy đầy cảm hứng và hữu ích mới lạ đời. Đọc xong thấy mình dại dột quá, đáng lẽ nên bắt đầu viết văn từ mấy năm trước thay cho mấy blog dấm dở, cũng đều là viết nhưng viết văn thì ta có thể ẩn mình đằng sau những nhân vật được thay tên đổi dạng, viết blog kiểu gì cũng phải chường cái tôi trần tục ra.
Thỉnh thoảng bế tắc đường viết sẽ giở ra đọc lại.

This is a simple book on writing anecdotes from well known authors. I found my favorites: Zora Neale Hurston and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. There were short quotes and longer quotes (or statements, rather) peppered between drawings. I appreciated the lovely way it was presented in the ebook. However, there was a lot of space left on several of the pages, so I don't know if I was missing something. This book can be used as a daily affirmation to encourage and uplift the writer as inspiration to write or pull you out of to doldrums when you're severely blocked.

An interesting concept for a book. Advice from the world's greatest writers on how, when and where you should write. A book you can dip into different sections to gain advice. I loved the format, the design and the look of the book. Some of the quotes were incredibly inspiring and influenced my own practices as a writer. I'd highly recommend it.

Interesting and inspiring as I gear up for a new year of learning. Makes you realize how differently we all work/function and how important it is to figure out your own path forward. There are no right or wrong ways to write, just what works best for you.

If you need a good overview of what the writing life is like, this is the book for you. I've never seen a collection of quotes more tailored to giving a well needed perspective on what the role of a writer is. Well done.

Mình chưa bao giờ nuôi ý định trở thành một nhà văn, không bao giờ có ý định này và mình biết là mình không sinh ra để dành cho nó. Tuy nhiên gần đây mình có một niềm tin rằng viết lách thực ra lại có tác dụng chữa lành. Bởi giống như thiền định, viết lách là cách mình có thể trò chuyện với chính mình, để hiểu được mình hơn một chút, hoặc chí ít là để có thể giải phóng cái đầu có quá nhiều những suy nghĩ lộn xộn của mình. .
Vậy là mình mua cuốn sách này, vì tò mò, cũng là vì hy vọng nó sẽ giúp cho mình có một nguồn cảm hứng nào đó. .
Đến lúc cầm trên tay cuốn sách, mình lại mơ hồ lo lắng. Rằng đây sẽ là cuốn giáo điều nói mình nên làm thế này, thế kia, bố cục đoạn văn này nọ. Nhưng may mắn thay, mình thấy bản thân đọc cuốn sách này không phải để học hỏi, mà để thưởng thức, để tâm hồn được một lần nữa truyền cảm hứng bởi những “người viết” khác nhau về địa lý, tư tưởng, thời đại,... Giống như cùng một lúc được tham gia vào một lớp học với quá nhiều người thầy giỏi, cảm thấy quả thực đã được thỏa mãn. .

Coffee table book: lavishly produced, yet faintly arch with its Paperchase illustrations, boldly spaced, fonts-akimbo text and editors who clearly have a view of their own importance, Being A Writer skims the Western canon (as in the pale and male rather than ten gallon hats) for the experience of writing rather than being a teach yourself guide.
Its scope is somewhat limited - they’re fond of Ray Bradbury, Charles Bukowski, Stephen King and George Orwell - but that means it doesn’t put a foot wrong, with insightful stuff. I’d have liked to see a little more adventure in the selections - a few more African, Caribbean, Japanese or even Irish writers, plus some contemporary Europeans (the bias is very much to established mid-century American male). But the nuggets are there - particularly from Emma Tennant, Neil Gaiman (sympathetic to writer’s block when most aren’t), Terry Pratchett (see “EFP - extruded fantasy product”) and Muriel Spark, who confesses to MAKING THINGS UP.
Any writing on writing is valuable enough, and so it should be at this price, which suggests more bookshelf oneupmanship than trade guide as it’s likely to be beyond the reach of a struggling hack scribbling away in a garret lit by Poundland candles and ambition. A fair contribution to aesthetic if not art.

Bạn nên chuẩn bị một tâm trí rộng mở vì đây là một tuyển tập, không có một sợi dây liên kết tư duy từ đầu đến cuối. Sẽ có những ý kiến bạn đồng ý và những ý kiến bạn phản đối - những đoạn văn trong đây đôi khi có tư tưởng hoàn toàn khác nhau. Bên cạnh đó, người mới đọc sẽ thấy khó chịu vì cỡ chữ và cách sắp xếp ngẫu nhiên lộn xộn, không giống một cuốn sách thông thường. Nhưng người theo đuổi việc viết và các ý tưởng khi đọc lâu rồi sẽ thấy việc sắp xếp như vậy giống như những mảnh báo cắt ra dán lại trên một cái bảng, mang tính ngẫu hứng của sự sáng tạo.
Tôi rất thích những bức tranh minh họa trong cuốn sách, đơn giản và mang tính ẩn dụ cao, hoàn toàn phù hợp với nội dung đang được đề cập trước đó.
Tuy vậy, những người khác có thể thấy cuốn sách lộn xộn, không có ý nghĩa và không đem lại giá trị.
Bạn nên chuẩn bị một tâm trí rộng mở vì đây là một tuyển tập, không có một sợi dây liên kết tư duy từ đầu đến cuối. Sẽ có những ý kiến bạn đồng ý và những ý kiến bạn phản đối - những đoạn văn trong đây đôi khi có tư tưởng hoàn toàn khác nhau. Nhưng người theo đuổi việc viết và các ý tưởng khi đọc lâu rồi sẽ thấy việc sắp xếp như vậy giống như những mảnh báo cắt ra dán lại trên một cái bảng, mang tính ngẫu hứng của sự sáng tạo.
Tôi rất thích những bức tranh minh họa trong cuốn sách, đơn giản và mang tính ẩn dụ cao, hoàn toàn phù hợp với nội dung đang được đề cập trước đó.

This was a fun book, in many respects. It is composed of the (sometimes random) musings of countless different writers on the heart and soul of the writing process (as well as some of the mechanics), taken from interviews and articles and other communications. Full attributions can be found at the back of the book.
Those musings are very uneven in value. In some cases they are mere whimsy, and in some cases they have the feel that the writer is trying to be whimsical, and being rather unsuccessful.
Some of the writers provide excellent advice and encouragement. Some of the writers contradict each other, in terms of the "rules of the road" of writing.
The book is definitely well worth reading, but you should not ask it to provide what it is not designed to provide. It is a fun book on writing, not a class on writing.
I would have marked it as a four, except in a number of places the editing was terrible-something unexpected in a book about writing.

Mình đọc cuốn này 2 chặng, chặng đầu đọc được có vài trang thấy hơi ngán ngán, mình đánh giá qua loa rằng nó chỉ là tổng hợp lại những lời khuyên và có thể ở thời điểm hiện tại mình chẳng cần dùng tới. Nhưng hóa ra chỉ là mình chưa hết sức tập trung khi đọc nó thôi.
Mình biết cuốn này từ một chị, trước viết blog "Góc nhỏ của cây" giờ có gia đình có con làm youtuber tên kênh gia đình Guinness (chị ấy dịch cuốn này luôn). Không phải tình cờ hay mua chơi đâu, vì tận sâu trong mình cũng luôn ấp ủ sẽ tạo thời gian để viết một bản thảo. Mình không đọc nhiều lắm, có lẽ mình đã viết nhiều hơn. Nhiều bài học trong cuốn này nghiền ngẫm lại khiến mình thấm thía.
Trên chặng đường dài và theo đuổi ước mơ trở thành người viết, mình nghĩ cuốn này sẽ ngày càng giá trị và hay hơn, chắc chắn mình giữ nó như cẩm nang và đọc lại. Mức điểm dánh giá sau này chắc cũng sẽ được nâng hạng.
Đôi khi, thứ hạng chưa cao không phải bởi vì cuốn sách, mà bởi người đọc nó chưa đủ để cảm thụ thôi.

Đừng phụ thuộc vào cảm nhận này của mình! Đối với mình, cuốn sách chưa phát huy đc hết tác dụng của nó. Mình mới chỉ 17 tuổi, nên có những thứ tác giả viết mình chưa cảm nhận được. Dùng mình đã cố gắng đọc hết cuốn sách thế nhưng chỉ note lại được tầm 10 điều là đáng giá. Còn lại đều gần như vô giá trị. Mình đã nhạn được nhiều phản hồi tích cực của những bạn đọc khác về cuốn sách này, nhưng có lẽ đọc chưa đúng lúc. Mình sẽ đọc lại trong vài năm tới.
1 vài điều mình khó chịu khi đọc:
- Sách có font chữ k đều nhau, 2 trang liền kề chữ bé chữ to, nhiều lúc kích cỡ khác nhau đến vô lí ??!
- Mình k thích điều này. Có quá nhiều khoảng trắng trong cuốn sách, như kiểu người trình bày cố để sách dày lên 1 chút.
- Cuốn sách như 1 tổng hợp ghi chép lại trích dẫn hay từ các tác giả, đúng như tiêu đề. Nhưng mình đã mong đợi nhiều hơn vậy!

A simple collections of musings and essays from famous wordsmiths around the world.
I tend to open this when I need a change of perspective when I'm writing my own work and seeing these author's words encapsulated in this book, gives me hope for my own career.
Some of the authors are self indulgent, arrogant and unforgiving with their words, but you don't need to like an author to love their work. Luckily.
Yes they do contradict each other and reading the whole thing through plays to me like my inner voices all screaming advice at one another... But fact is: these people have enjoyed success and if you're looking to get inside their heads; here you go.

I started reading this book out of not having anything else to read and then I got really curious about what motivates these people to write. There are a variety of opinions and the most valuable thing I've learned is that if you ever want to write something figure out how you work best, don't try to guess and follow what others do, because the way you do it is very subjective. Self confidence is the most important. It was good to read so many personal details about some topnotch writers and their work.

The book disappointed me. The book is simply a collection of tips from writers. I read the book review before I bought it, but I didn't expect it to be so bad. Cliché and bland. I really like writing and am looking for a book that makes me develop or improve my writing skills, but the book is very rambling :((( The book has very little information but lots of illustrations. I don't like that design. I read quite quickly, it took about an hour to read the book. I even feel a waste of money and time.

Đây là cuốn sách tuyển tập các lời khuyên, chia sẻ từ các tác gia trứ danh. Dù là tác gia trứ danh, nhưng ai trong số họ cũng đều rơi vào trạng thái bí ý tưởng, bí từ, viết đi viết lại,...Bởi thế, chỉ có kiên trì, và chắc chắn viết với một thái độ không được phép hời hợt.
Hãy đọc, đọc thật nhiều, và nhớ hãy chắt lọc những tác phẩm mà mình đọc. Rồi những lời, những từ mình viết sẽ có những hơi hướng tựa như sách mình đọc.
Kiên trì và bình tâm!

This book is to share about author's experience when writing, they also sometimes get trouble to find a new ideas or inspiration to write.
It meant that when we are in a bad mood or there is not motivation of writing, then even famous authors are.
It's a book to support for your soul in writing and guide you some way to make a novel or book.
For example: If you want to improve your focusing, you should have a cat, just look at him and you will see the improvements day by day.
I was surprised for this advice.

Wisdom, wit and some practical advice from some of the greatest authors new and old. I love reading their thoughts. The essays were wonderful and it was formatted to be so easy to read. You could even roam around for advice, musings, and whatever author appeals to you. I really enjoyed this book and all the advice and words that were shared. You do not have to read it in one sitting. It would make a great night table book, me, I just devoured it.

Sẽ đọc thêm nhiều lẩn nữa để viết cái gì đó cho riêng mình.
Đây là một quyển sách đắt giá, nhất là dành cho những người làm nghề viết hoặc muốn viết.
Một điều tôi cảm thấy rất đáng tiếc là việc trình bày bố cục rời rạc, hình ảnh đơn điệu và cỡ chữ không đồng đều. Nhưng vẫn đáng tiếc hơn là không đọc nó ^^.
Cuốn sách này không biết đánh giá mấy "sao" cho hợp lý ???
Sẽ đọc thêm nhiều lẩn nữa để viết cái gì đó cho riêng mình.
