Calder Brand is a spin-off of the Calder Saga, a wonderful historical romance series! The plot is well-paced and engaging, and the characters are dynamically developed. The story follows Joe Dollarhide from age sixteen to twenty-eight, so you really get to understand him and his motivations. Believing that he was left for dead during a cattle drive, Joe’s need for revenge consumes him. However, he also wants to own his own farm and have a family. Wow its a little freaky I was thinking to myself last week that it has been a while since I read one of Ms. Dailey's book so needless to say when this showed up in my quier I was ecstatic and requested it and am happy that I did.

I thank Good Reads Giveaway for sending me this adventurous story filled with memorable characters, from Kensington Publishing Corp. Calder Brand is one of six in a New Americana Series. I expect several of them will become future reads. The cattle drive and ranch settings took me back to childhood memories of beloved calves, cows, and horses.

A worthy successor to the magnificent Calder Saga! FIVE GLOWING MONTANA STARS!

WHAT A SURPRISE! When I read the blurb for this book, I couldn't believe my eyes. How could Joe Dollarhide possibly be the hero? Didn't he die on Benteen Calder's first cattle drive to Montana, when cattle "trampled him into the ground" during a stampede? That's what we were led to believe in This Calder Range. (A few spoilers ahead, but I won't reveal the ending.)

Calder Brand by Janet Dailey is a historic, cowboy love story, but it is so much more. It is about the American dream. And the dream came true. Joe Dollarhide is on a cattle drive. It's his first as he is only 16, but he has big dreams. He has gone into town with another drover to pickup merchandise ordered by their boss. With time to kill, he and his friend head to a whorehouse. To be fair, Joe didn't know where they were going. Before they made it, Joe spied a couple of men attaching a young w ...more

Joe Dollarhide was 16 years old when he left his Texas home to join the Calder Cattle Company to bring a large herd of cattle up to Nebraska. It was a first job for him. He had learned hard work by helping his folks run the farm. Today he will find that being a wrangler’s helper would be beyond difficult. By the end of the day when he ate his beans and biscuits for supper and laid his bedroll out on the hard ground, he realized what a tough road he had ch

This historical ‘romance’ follows the Joe Dollarhide in the old American West as a 16 year old teenager to a 28 year old ‘man’. This story read more like a saga with Joe’s petty and immature need for revenge against Benteen Calder, a man who Joe alleges left him for dead, but in actuality did not. Joe falls in ‘love’ with a female named Sarah and leaves her, marrying another woman and fathering a child with his now wife. I am laughing in bafflement by all of these unromantic things happening in ...more

I was a bit confused at first with this book. Using the Calder name in the title of this book made me think this was a book about the Calder family that we know and love. It was a bit about the Calder family, but not very much. Once I read more, I understood this was a book about an employee of the Calder family who had an unfortunate incident happen to him and he felt he was left behind.

Joe Dollarhide is young and ambitious. He wants what the Calder's have, a spread of land and a ranch. When he

Enjoyable read with likable characters and a page-turning plot. The story is told as a flash back memory from two perspectives, Joe’s and Sarah’s; however, it mostly centers around Joe’s story and perspective. The story brings us into the world of 1879 with a cowboy determined to make a life and name for himself and a young woman determined to be a doctor. Their journeys take them through times of love and times of hurt.

Though I wonder about the need for expanding the Calder Saga with other series set in the various eras of the original books (yes, I see this as the beginning of a series or series that will also intersect with Webb and Chase), I have to admit that, like the New Americana series, it is good to see the classic Janet Dailey return.

Calder Brand is the first of a new Calder Series by Janet Dailey. While the Calders are part of this story is it really Joe Dollarhide and Sarah Foxworth’s story. A romance but more a sage as their lives cross, separate then cross again.

In some ways I was reminded of Lonesome Dove with the cattle trail, the dangers, the harshness of the land and some of the people. The story has dual POVs of Joe and Sarah which is great because much of the time they are apart. Easy to read, pulling you into the

Finally, a book I often could not put down! This is more like the Janet Dailey I knew and loved. The writing is excellent and the storytelling is great.

If I had a complaint, it would be that the ending is somewhat unsatisfactory and even a bit comical, considering the all-consuming urge for revenge that Joe had and how it affected his often poor life decisions. I would also have preferred a more convincing romance instead of love after a few days.

I have read all the books in the original Calder Series by Janet Dailey and was hoping this revival of the series would be as good as the original. I was not disappointed. Left to die by Benteen Calder, Joe Dollarhide is determined to get even. After several years of a dishonest lifestyle Joe comes to the conclusion the only way to settle the score is through legal means. There is plenty of suspense and drama as well as romance. This is the first in a new series by Janet Dailey. Janet Dailey has been around for what seems like forever and I have loved all her books. Her name isn’t as well known as others like Danielle Steel but Dailey ranks right up there with the greats.

In this story we meet Sarah and Joe who have a second chance at love. They met and were together years ago and now Sarah is back in Joe’s life and their son in tow.

Time and time again Joe finds himself in precarious situations but fate or God help him. When Mr. Calder leaves him for dead, after a search where they can’t find him, Joe is nursed back to health by Sarah.

I believe this book is a spin-off of an earlier series by Janet Dailey, but this book can be read as a stand-alone without having read that series. Set in the late 1800s, through this book we are given a glimpse of how tough life on a cattle drive is, and how determination can lead a person to pursuing their dreams. I am always impressed by a book that draws me in and won’t let go, and this story definitely did that. The writer also does a very good job of describing life during that period of t ...more

This is the first western type book that I’ve read in years. It brought back the memories of all the Louis L’amour books I had read in the past. It reminded me of the Lonesome Dove story but with a plethora of plot twist and turns. Some of the turns I could see coming and it makes you think that you’ve got it all figured out.
