Quick thoughts: I have read all of Marie Benedict’s books featuring strong women in history, and every year, I think she’s topped herself. She really has topped herself with this book featuring Agatha Christie’s mysterious disappearance!
Yes, Christie really disappeared and this story is not well known, and it happened just as her career was beginning to take off.

Not the most satisfying historical fiction read. This book is the fourth one I have read by this author and one of my criticisms is I'm usually left wanting more in terms of development. Wasted potential is a good way to describe this book. It's a quick read but it felt uninspired. There are so many authors, including this one, that are churning out a book a year and I think in the vast majority of cases, it's too quick of a pace. Some more fine tuning was needed for this book.

Oh this book was so good - how have I never read this author before? All of her books are now on my TBR. As soon as I saw this one I had to have it and I ordered it from Book Depository, unsure if it would come out in Australia. I am glad that I did as I now have a gorgeous hardcover book!

Unfortunately this author is just not for me. I do love the historical fiction genre, but Marie Benedict puts too much conjecture into her books that supposedly contain history. This one, about the disappearance of Agatha Christie, an event that Mrs Christi never spoke of or gave reasons why, is the ultimate theme of the book. While Benedict's guessing to the reason may indeed have been the case, I just could not from about the 60% mark make the story work for me.

Ok. Here is the thing, since this book has been endorsed by Kate Quinn, Lisa Wingate and Stuart Turton and that there are lots of fans of this book, I promise to be very brief.
This one failed me at every level.

Ever since reading Agatha Christie’s autobiography as a teen, after having binge-read my way through all her books, I have been intrigued by the real life mystery surrounding her ten-day disappearance in 1926, a secret she has taken to the grave with her. I was therefore very excited to read Marie Benedict’s interpretation of what could have happened, and I must say that I liked this version very much!

Nope. This was a huge miss. Sophomoric. Just bad writing. And seriously - “Detective Chief Constable” can’t be shortened? It’s like the author is intentionally trying to irritate the hell out of her readers by refusing to call him simply “Kenward”. Or DCC Kenward. There is no need to abuse us that way.

Another winner from Marie Benedict. Agatha Christie is my very favorite author, so I was excited to read this take on the mystery behind her eleven day disappearance. Benedict chose to capitalize on Christie's incredible puzzling skills to craft a believable tale that, in the absence of the real story, makes it easy to believe this one. Can't wait to see what this author has up her sleeve next!

I very much enjoyed this book. The writing was hard to get into, but as long as I could sit with the book for a while, the words flew off the page.
The story is told in alternate timelines, from her days as a young lady leading up to her meeting Mr Christie and days following her disappearance in 1926. I thought the author did a great job telling a very plausible tale to explain that disappearance. I sure hope she was right!
