This is a wonderful little daily devotional by someone who lived long ago, but had words of wisdom for today. Each begins with a short verse or two, and then has some thoughts pulled from various sources from George MacDonald's writings, followed by a question or two for reflection or discussion. My husband and I read them at night and they prompted some good conversations. I very much appreciate MacDonald's perspective. I know that he was a big influence for C.S. Lewis and you can feel the similarity in the writing. Some of the devotionals were not completely translate-able to today's language, so I had trouble understanding some of them, but they were worth discussing and attempting to understand. I didn't buy 100 percent of every word, but I could see myself reading this one again and again throughout the years.
Quotes:
"Love invaded by loss is grief."
"We must each ask ourselves this question: 'Is my neighbor indeed my enemy, or am I my neighbor's enemy and perceive him to be mine?' Awful thought! 'Or, if he is my enemy, am I not his? Am I not refusing to acknowledge the child of the kingdom within his bosom, thus killing the child of the kingdom within my own'"
"Real approximation, real union, must ever be in proportion to mutual truthfulness."

George MacDonald's gentle style of writing is such a refreshing read. I found so many of these little tidbits to be just what I needed to hear at the time. His writing has been a favorite for many years. He may be gentle but he is accurate and doesn't hesitate to speak things truthfully. Uplifting is a good word for his writing.
