I was first told this story through oral tradition as it is a fun tale for Native children. I was very glad when my dad gave me this book as a child. (I gotta say though, it's still best if you hear it from an elder with a good storytelling ability.)

Why Bear Has a Short Tail by Cathy Pavia is a great book filled with life lessons for young and old. The main characters, Bear and Fox depict unfavorable human characteristics such as pride, jealously, envy, impatience, and revenge. The reader observes that Bear is filled with pride and not very smart in his choosing of the fox, as his friend. Additionally, it is important to trust and listen to those that have proven themselves trustworthy. In the end Bear learns a tough lesson after he suffers a great loss.
A teacher might consider using this book to students when discussing courtesy and kindness, the importance of stranger danger and trust, and the differences betweeen animals.
