I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

In The Mummy of Monte Cristo, J. Trevor Robinson has taken the classic French adventure novel and added a twist, supernatural creatures, zombies, vampires, a mummy and all sorts of other mythical creatures. From the first chapter, I knew this novel was going to be a special experience for me. In elementary school, I was selected to be part of a group of students, who were taught speed reading, something I use to this day. In speed reading, the reader does not read every written word, but picks o ...more

Before you start this book, you have to know what you’re getting into. As the title indicates, it’s a rewriting of Dumas’ Count of Monte Cristo with an occult slant. As such, it needs to be reviewed in two parts.

As a Historical Work of Art
This is a pretty impressive homage to Alexandre Dumas and the 19th Century French novel. Robinson has the writing style and the mood down pat. Those not familiar with that literature will find the book heavy to narrative and light to dialogue. Those who know th

The Mummy of Monte Cristo is a retelling of the literary classic written by Alexandre Dumas. Edmond Dantes, a young sailor is made Captain and about to get married to his sweetheart, Mercedes, when the jealousy and resentment of three colleagues drive them to frame him for treason. Due also to the corrupt actions of the wickedly craven Gerard de Villefort, Edmond is imprisoned without trial for fourteen years in the notorious Chateau d’If. However, the long years of captivity serve as both an ed ...more

The Mummy of Monte Cristo is my first introduction to the talents of J Trevor Robinson. It will not be my last. I do not normally read this genre, but after reading this one, that may change. It was full of adventure, danger, action and pure terror. I enjoyed every single page. I did not expect to keep reading it. I had the whole book read in two nights. It was well worth staying up at night to read. It was so very good.

I have giving The Mummy of Monte Cristo a very well deserved five plus star

I always find it fun to read retellings of the classics as people put their own and new spins on stories which otherwise feel slightly out of time. I was more than happy to read the e-ARC which was provided by the author.

The story of Monte Cristo is infamous - a man out on a mission to destroy the lives of those who wrongly persecuted him out of ill will and jealousy. Edmond Dantes, a sailor with Morrel & Sons, is arrested on the day of his marriage for being a Bonapartist. After spending years

J. Trevor Robinson’s supernatural adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s classic distinguishes itself from the first page. When a kraken attacks a ship in the Marseille harbor, Edmund Dantes springs into action and rescues the distressed craft. The story continues at a similarly action-packed and inventive clip. Robinson is especially adept at integrating classic horror elements into French history, such as the clever assertion that the guillotine was invented to sever the heads of rampaging zombies.

I’m not done with this book, but so far I am thoroughly enjoying it. I never read the original, so I don’t know exactly what elements were fabricated by J Trevor and which by the book. But it is so fun. It is dark and creepy with zombies and plague. It feels like reading a classic novel(which I love). Edmond is such a fascinating character. One of my favorite chapters so far was the marriage scene at the beginning. It was horrifying and so different than a wedding would usually feel (maybe it wa ...more

I had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of this novel prior to release, and so glad I did!

Robinson has taken the foundation of Dumas' story The Count of Monte Cristo, and built up the framework for what I believe to be an incredible series of novels that ache of supernatural revenge.

A long novel, but a quick read because I could only out it down to sleep! It was thrilling, and fun, and I can hardly wait to see what is next for the characters that make it to the end of this novel.

When J Trevor was young, he received a well-worn stack of mystery and horror novels from his older brother, and it instilled in him a lifelong desire to be an author. Heavily influenced by Stephen King's scares, Jim Butcher's action scenes, and the larger-than-life characters in Ayn Rand's books, he blended those influences with classic literature and pulp horror to write THE MUMMY OF MONTE CRISTO ...more
