Special Agent Dale Conley is working in San Francisco along with Deputy Marshall Hanna Yorke.

Jonathan Fair is an escapee from prison and is mentally ill. He has Dissociative Identify Disorder (DID), which used to be known as Multiple Personality Disorder. The unique thing about Fair’s delusions is that he now believes that he is living in an alternative time; no longer the present. He is also a member of a major San Francisco crime family. It is Dale and Hanna’s job to locate and recapture him.

Our story opens with Hanna and Dale in a thrilling chase of Fair through the streets of San Francisco. When the man is finally captured, Hanna and Dale make a startling observation.

Add to the chase the involvement of the Irish mob and its attendant interference and problems.

I truly enjoyed the “stroll” through the San Francisco culture and a look at its people of the 1970’s. It was in fact 1971 the last time I was there and it brought back several memories.

I’m not sure that I would label a person with DID as having “delusions.” They are, rather, discrete and separate identities – autonomous and unique.

The book is well written and plotted. I liked the relationship between Dale and Hanna; the teasing and gentle banter was a nice aside to the action. This is my fist Erik Carter book but I do have the other ones he has written in my TBR (to be read), plie. This is a good book and I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading the previous three, as I have read them out of order.

I want to thank Erik Carter for forwarding to me a copy of this good book for me to read, enjoy and review.

“Where or where is Johnathan Fair?” Is on everyone’s lips. Johnathan Fair, an escaped mental hospital patient, with known multiple personality disorder, is free. Free as the wind, and about as destructive as an unbridled hurricane. He strikes various businesses, blowing up bank vaults and robbing establishments, and always leaving behind cryptic messages…..
It’s up to undercover federal agent Dale Comely and his partner Hanna Yorke to find and apprehend Johnathan. But even the best laid plans can go awry, as Dale and Hanna find themselves facing unexpected and perilous situations, with the assassin “El Vacio” peering from the darkness, waiting to make his move. Dale and Hana must meet all threats head on to win this deadly game of cat and mouse. Find Johnathan Fair, apprehend him, end his reign of destruction. Sounds reasonable, right? If only it were that easy….
Is Johnathan Fair the mastermind behind this rampage, or is he being used as a pawn by another; a malevolent presence that is barely sensed, but not clearly seen? Who is stalking whom in this tense, riveting thriller? Fast paced and action packed, your head will be spinning with the hair pin twists and convoluted turns of this book.

I received a free copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review of the same.

I haven't read a Dale Conley thriller in quite a few months, and I definitely didn't know how much I needed to. This book got me out of a reading slump!

Jonathan Fair has managed to escape a mental hospital/facility. He suffers from manic delusions, and also has several different personalities that can completely take over his mind, so the city does not know what to expect from him. If they hunt him down like a criminal, they might come across a man with a child's mind. If they hunt him down like a sick person who needs to return to the hospital, they might come across a murderer. Dale is hired to help catch Jonathan Fair, and he has to work with Yorke, another female cop, to figure out where he is. Jonathan is leaving secretive messages all over the town, which is sort of helping out the police, but they are still being lead on a wild chase throughout San Francisco. But was he the only one to escape the facility?

One of the main characters in this story is Jane. She is John's sister and knows the truth about his struggle with mental illness. Hoping to find her brother before the police do, she tries to use the clues to figure out where John is, and which personality he is going to be at the moment. She has given up most of her life to try to protect her brother, never having any relationships and moving constantly to be closer to her brother. She doesn't want to see her brother put in jail for something that he most likely doesn't remember doing, and she knows that he is trying to reach out to her so that he can continue to get the help that he needs.

I'll admit, it took me a bit longer than I would have liked to get into the book. The beginning made me feel as if I was flying from scene to scene, and I had no clue who most of the characters were. But when Jane came into the story about a third of the way through, I was immediately hooked. Her character truly propelled me through the rest of the novel, and she ended up being my favorite character in the entire novel. She really made all the pieces fall into place, as she gave the readers information about John's true nature.

By the time I got to the end of the book, I was honestly surprised at how quickly I got through it. I felt like it had taken me longer to read the previous Dale Conley book. But I definitely liked that the novel, it didn't have the usual "pages of boredom followed by a few minutes of thriller" that I see in several mystery novels. Once I got past the first 25% of the book, which I finished in probably less than 30 minutes, I was on the edge of my seat. There were no moments where the story bored me, I was constantly trying to use small clues to solve the mystery. I raced to the end, and immediately was ready for the next Dale Conley Thriller!

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a new mystery-thriller novel with an addictive storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I received an advance copy of this novel and this is my voluntary review.

Erik Carter has once again delivered a hit with his latest Dale Conley thriller! He takes us back to an interesting time in American history with an epic Erik Carter twist of plot that really bring the period to life. Visit San Francisco just after a devastating earthquake has shattered the lives of its citizens. The view the city in the 1970's during a crime spree that demands the special skills of Dale Conley to solve. In classic Carter style, the reader is instantly engaged with believable characters, and realistic action that keeps one coming back book after book!

An escaped mental patient, Jonathan Fair, has robbed a bank leaving behind a cryptic message referring to an earthquake in 1906's that took hundreds of lives. Jonathan is the youngest son of one of the two strongest mob bosses in San Francisco, though not close to his father, and the bank robbed belonged to the other highest mob boss. Coincidence or planning? With his mental condition, dissociative identity disorder, or more commonly, multiple personalities, is Jonathan capable of such a plan? Either way he is the most sought after criminal in the country, and with the earthquake reference, one that calls for Dale Conley.

The city has a circus atmosphere as Dale arrives in disguise to work the case with his current partner Federal Marshall Hanna Yorke. Underneath is a tinderbox as the crime families prepare for a possible war from the outfall. If this case can't be solved soon, things just may explode!

In the meantime, Jonathan lives out his hallucinations, continuing to escalate matters. To make things worse a hired assassin appears in the city with each crime family attributing his presence to the other. War creeps closer, and tension in the city rises. Jonathan spreads his cryptic clues.

Can Dale and Hanna solve this riddle before San Francisco erupts in violence? What secrets lie in the past? Only Dale has a chance to link past and present to find the answers. Join him for an action packed thriller history buffs and detective fans both will love.

‘Where, oh where is Jonathan Fair?’

Florida author Erik Carter has been a television host, a documentarian, and a college teacher. He is highly regarded as a writer of suspense thrillers – the Dale Conley Action Thrillers Series for which GET REAL is Book 4.

For those for whom this is the first exposure to this stunning series, we learned in Book 1 that ‘Dale Conley thought he could escape his past. He was dead wrong. Dale works in the shadows—but he's never seen anything this dark. When a town's entire population is abducted overnight, Dale's only clue is a cryptic, historical message chiseled into a stone. As Dale scrambles to put the pieces together, he's faced with the demented kidnapper's escalating demands. It's only when survivors begin to reappear—maimed, broken, dead—that Dale realizes the kidnapper knows about Dale's dark past. Now Dale must clash with his own demons to have any chance at saving the missing people.

Now two years later – and three books later – we find the synopsis fills us in on the current status of our hero. ‘What’s Right? What’s Wrong? What’s Real? Dale Conley is struggling to be the voice of reason—because everyone around him is losing their minds. San Francisco is in a panic. The entire city is hunting Jonathan Fair—son of a prominent crime family, sufferer of manic hallucinations, imprisoned bank robber … and recent escapee. With the world watching and as the crimes pile up, Dale feverishly tracks Fair, whose mind has convinced him he’s living in a different time, making his actions erratic. And almost impossible for Dale to decipher. Meanwhile, other, darker forces are using the circus surrounding the Jonathan Fair manhunt to move into position, poised to strike a blow to San Francisco…’

Read the first chapter and you realize that this is an important new voice in the genre of action and suspense thrillers. Erik creates refreshingly new characters in novel circumstances, but at the same time he never lets us forget that Dale Conley is there to resolve the tale. Book 5 is on its way! Recommended.

As I hadn't read any of this series, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I needn't have worried, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read, although I suspect that I would have enjoyed it even more if I had read the previous books in the series as there wasn't a lot of background on the main character, Dale Conley.
So, what did I like? Well the location descriptions were terrific, the characters were well written and developed (apart from Dale's) and their interactions were believable; the plot was complex without being being completely opaque; the beginning of the book was very exciting and the dialogue was well handled.
However, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more about Dale, as there was a hint that he has a rather special talent for puzzle solving, which would have been fascinating and also there was reference to the 'Bureau of Esoteric Investigations' without any real explanation of what this is.
But I am nit-picking here, and I read the book in just two sessions as I was intrigued to see where the story was going to go.
I received an advance copy of the book from the author, but have voluntarily written this review.

Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the author but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.

What is real?

Get Real, the fourth in the Dale Conley series by Erik Carter follows BEI agent Dale Conley as he goes undercover in San Francisco to assist in tracking down escaped convict Jonathan Fair. The estranged son of one of the local crime families, Fair has escaped in dramatic fashion and has been spotted knocking off establishments of the rival family. Having eluded capture thus far, Fair begins leaving behind cryptic messages that hearken back to an event that occurred over one hundred years ago. Conley sets out to unravel the mystery that spans a century and lives in the deranged mind of Jonathan as he tried to figure out if Fair is the actual mastermind behind the heists or if there is more than meets the eye.
Set in the 1970s, the Dale Conley action series is a fun romp through the past, back during a time before smartphones and Wi-Fi. Conley is a specialized FBI agent with a knack for sniffing out anything with historical implications, and the instance with Jonathan Fair is no different. Peppering in all manner of facts, well known and not, regarding the San Francisco Earthquake, Get Real is not only a great story but also a cleverly disguised history lesson. Having Fair be not only the antagonist but also a bit of a cult hero in the city makes for a difficult time Dale as he encounters many enthusiastic imposters along the way. As Jonathan Fair’s story unfolds, and the full picture is revealed I started to feel sympathy for Fair and as the book reached its conclusion, it left me wondering if the ‘bad guy’ was aptly labeled or if he was a pawn in a much bigger game being played. Get Real is yet another in the line to fiction with a historical twist that Carter has on offer. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing where the BEI and Arancia take Dale for his next case.

Adventures galore six stars

The Bureau of Esoteric Investigations send Dale Conley on another wild chase, I mean case, this time to San Francisco after Jonathan Fair. Fair is part of the Irish mafia and an international media darling of the moment as he is aided by look alikes and hidden in crowds to avoid capture. Dale is frustrated by The many false starts but his cunning has worked so well in the past he hopped this time he can work out the puzzle of the long kept San Francisco secret. It takes all of his skills, historical data and puzzle solving acumen to dig up the truth.

I was given an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. I love this series. The action, car chases, historical accuracy and writing style combine to pull me into the story as though I am right in the scenes.

Erik Carter writes well and grabs your attention quickly. I liked the historical connections in this book and love that I learned some things along the way that I was unaware of previously. It was very quick moving and if you like the style of short chapters that move through multiple viewpoints then this will be up your alley. Don't you sometimes analyze what different characters were thinking when making decisions? I do this a lot and so this style speaks to my curious nature. Didn't put it down for a couple days. Had to see how it wrapped up. I received a free advance copy for an honest review. I purchased this afterwards because I really felt it was a great book to read again in future.

I am part of this authors advance team and I am giving an honest opinion.

This is a great series. Each book is stand alone but I recommend reading from book one because of character development. The lead in this series, Dan Conley is one cool character. He’s smart, funny and drives one great car.
The characters in this book can make your head spin. This story will pull you in from the first chapter but you have to wait a bit before the story comes together and it’s worth the wait. This is a very action packed book. You will get hooked and not put this book down. I really enjoyed it as I do this series.

Loved Get Real by Erik Carter. Brings us Dale once again doing a superb main character “Dale”, and a very fast actioned plot. Lots of ACTION I emphasize. And many twists and turns to the story with all that jam packed action too. Developed characters. Was feeling like diving to the floor with the rest of the victims when El Vacio goes off on them with that MAC10! Could almost feel the bullets whzzing by over my head. The multiple personality, of one character, Felix causes lots of havoc as Dale and partner Yorke run their legs off trying to stop the villain. Great job Mr.Carter on this latest Dale Conley book!

The book is well written with well-developed characters. I liked the relationship between Dale and Hanna; the teasing and gentle banter was a nice aside to the action. This is my fist Erik Carter book but it will definitely not be my last! Fast paced and action packed, your head will be spinning with the hair pin twists and convoluted turns of this book. A wonderfully crafted story with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last page.

Who is Jonathon Fair? He is an escaped mental patient with Multiple Personality Disorder. He is also a member of a San Francisco crime family. Dale Conely and his partner Hanna Yorke are put in charge of finding him and getting him off the streets. For awhile imposters lead them on a wild goose chase. This story is full of intrigue, adventure, loaded with fast paced action, twists and turns. Great characters that are fleshed out. A great plot that flows because it is so well written. You will be kept on the edge of your seat.

Get Real is the latest fabulously thrilling book in the Dale series.
It's a superb stand alone if you haven't read any of Eriks work before.
But I would totally recommend this and his other books in this wonderfully exciting series. You really do find that time ceases to matter as you literally cannot put the book down. It is a storyline that you can't wait to find its conclusion, but you also do not want to end.

Great story and series

This was an intriguing story with complex twists that will keep you guessing until the end. I do wish that all aspects of the stories would have some sort of conclusion, especially if it's a major topic in the story. Overall it was a great read.
